Fallout 4 as an Isometric Game

Post » Tue Dec 01, 2015 11:14 pm

I thought you may all be interested in the link below, which shows Fallout 4 reimagined as an isometric game. Note that this is not an actual game, but it's still pretty cool. And who knows, somebody may end making this!

I like it. Isometric games will always have a special space im my heart.

I wouldn't mind if someone re-made the old Fallouts in this style. With all the modern bells and whistles, but core gameplay the same, just enhanced... not that it would ever happen, mind you.

Don't worry, I am sure someone'll make a mod for it at least. :D

Well they say Top-Down perspectives are dead. Well. The condemned live longer.

I believe turn based gameplay and top down perspectives will see a huge come back at some point. I think the open world idea and high focus on visuals will eventually wear down and gamers will look for something different. Probably not with Fallout, but I am sure with many other games. See Diablo 3 as best example, it still managed to sell more than 15 million units. And that as a game that was neither First/Third Person and open world. Deus Ex HR was also not your typical CoD shooter and it was a huge success. And particularly D3 is still going strong, despite of its flaws.

There is no problem with mass market products. They have their place. But I guess gamers do also look for other experiences, looking at conversations independent games offered on platform like STEAM are gaining more importance. And many of them do not follow the traditional AAA formula of purely action oriented games. There is really a lot of diversity the kind of diversity that doesn't really exist with AAA games.

Meh. Fallout, as a game where you directly control only one actor, is probably better played from first person perspective. This would be great for "Fallout: Tactics 2".

I like the first person view a lot better personally

I do enjoy isometric with some games (I still like 2-D side scrollers too.) but the preference is first person for immersion sake. I do like the other 2 views better than third person though.

No, it'd be better for Fallout series as a whole; and Tactics 2 as well. It's how they should have been done from the start.

I like that the games are now first person/third person. Personally I like that more then isometric view but thats my opinion. Long live first person!

It could be better in a way that it would make the developers focus less on wow-effects and more on writing, but that's about it. And of course it would be tactical action instead of first-person shooter, but I don't consider the "action" game of the part to be all that important.

Personally I would prefer a top-down camera (along with its implications) but I'm not going to go as far as to say it's superior.

I'll be getting Wasteland 2 myself. Just waiting for the 'Directors Cut' edition in October ... and a sale (cause I've gotten cheap that way).

I would not say it's inherently superior; it's just inherently more appropriate given the series..

Also: Even if they had produced the game in those images, it would not have saved it if the rest of the game was lacking the the rest of what made the Fallout series so respected. If it played like FO3 in top down view... that would not have been a significant improvement IMO.

Oh, I totally agree with that, but I still consider BSG's games spin-offs since they differ from the originals so much :D

You can't possibly hate it as much as me and still be a sane individual. I literally do not understand anyone can roleplay from such a, to me, completely wargamey perspective. This sort of stuff makes me even more thankful for Bethesda's vision and our 1st/3rd person choices.

same here.

But look at this images. Its a shame that BGS dont outsource a company to make a spin off like that. It could be released straight to Live / Psn.

Isometric view works for some games. I enjoyed playing Fallout 1 and 2. However, I felt not as invested in these games, because the immersion factor wasn't there. That's just my personal opinion. I like the huge open world and first person view, because it feels I'm actually part of that world.

This is a primary reason I like it the proper way for Fallout ~as per the series intended design.

*Because it does not encourage that... The last thing I would ever want in a roleplaying game is to feel like I'm actually part of that world. That is not the point; that's distraction from the point. The PC is part of that world.

IMO the game shouldn't be offering the player any part of the game that the PC cannot achieve or access. This is what is wrong with Bethesda's gameplay IMO. It allows the player to cheat for the PC, and only concerns itself with the spectacle of the game world.

technically, it's just a matter of view port.

meaning, it shouldn't be a problem to have the the _actual_ fallout 4 rendered isometric.

fo3 HAD isometric and top down views you could switch to at runtime "onboard" (which btw pretty clearly proved why that's NOT that good an idea for a game that's pretty ranged by nature, and i'm saying this as a spoken iso-lover).

and you also still have their iso modes in all the editors up to skyrim's creation kit, and iso is natively supported by the creation engine / gamebryo (they made games like "sim city societies" on gamebryo).

so, if you can't still switch the _actual_ fo4 to top down / iso (i think it'll be possible anyhow though, it's just a nice feature to add at no cost, so why should they not), i'm pretty positive this should be moddable.

Those screens looked fantastic!! But let's be honest, it'll never happen.

Isometric and 2d was used in the 90s cause it was easier, more common and looked better than 3d engines.

But now, i doubt majority of Fallout fans will approve of new Isometric Fallout game.

The Fallout developers originally looked into designing it with 3D polygons, but their testing showed that most people's PC hardware was not up to the task; they just couldn't get the numbers they were hoping for on consumer desktops. Now... had they wished to, they could have released Fallout as a first person franken-shooter in the day. There were very good FPS engines, and Interplay published FPP shooters alongside Fallout that year.

To this day, Fallout chugs because it has to load in so many sprites. I'm sure they would have loved to have used another method instead, but that one worked on desktops without 3D accelerators.
