Fallout 4 lacking in story?

Post » Mon Jan 18, 2016 9:48 pm

Fallout 3 is mentioned at times and the NCR. But nothing else. The west coast is ignored. So if you want Fallout Lore( most is on the west coast) read the wiki or watch that Shoddy Cast Lore series on Youtube. Or just play Fallout 1, 2 and New Vegas.

have fun playing the game exactly the same way you played your first character. Of course, there could be some difference, mainly that you become stuck with very little to do but explore and shoot stuff(which will be like your side activity first playthrough).

Cuz, your only option is "No". "Will you help me" "No". But you will become stuck, because in order to progress the MQ you have to say "yes" and you have to "care".

Spoiler
Will you save the Minutement: "No". Done.

Will you become the Silver Shroud: "No". Done.

Will you find the cure in V81? "No". Done.

Will you help Cait or McCready? "No." Done.

Will you help Settlers? "No". Done.

Will you help Bos? "No." Done.

Will you help RR? "No." Done.

Will you find Nick Valentine? "No." Game over, unless you say "Yes".

Obviously, if you make a character with no motivation or ambition it is going to lack agency in the story. This is a roleplaying mistake by the player, not a flaw in the plot. Any roleplaying story ever created would end the minute the player decided his character doesn't care anymore.

This.

I already know that I'll be able to make it work to my satisfaction. All it takes is effort.

The way I see it, Bethesda really doesn't tell stories in quest lines, but in the open world itself. And they expect you to explore to find them. You have the wizard falling from the sky in the beginning of Morrowind. You have to read a letter in his inventory to see what happened. In Oblivion there is a drowned troll under a bridge with a suicide note.

In Skyrim there is a skeleton on top of a cliff with a note saying that he is waiting for his girl to pass by on a ship.

In Fallout 3 and 4 there are tons of logs left on computer terminals for you to read. One of them leads to a dead family with buried kids.

Another reason why I love Bethesda games. They make breathing worlds.

For the same reason that companies who are good at making stories but not so good to outright crappy at making worlds can't do both. Nobody is good at everything and it's always better to focus on onesstrong suits. I'm a little surprised F4's story turned out as intriguing as it did.

Because no game company in any genre does everything well. They all have their own little niche that they excel in and lack in others. It's the same in sports games, shooters, and so on.

Most Terminals i saw were filled with non-sense. Like Shipment Date, Weight, Company Rules and other [censored]. Yes some good Stories too but not many. The Lore is one of my biggest Problems here. In Skyrim there many Books and the most of them i have read. Many extra Stories, or old Wars/old Eras, Aedra/Daedra or new Techniques with some beautiful/sad stories to it. Fallout 4 feels like there is non in Comparison to Skyrim. And what i dont understand is, why you defend Bethesda in that Case. I got with Skyrim the double Size of Content and for the same Money i get a half Skyrim called Fallout 4. Why you dont fight for your right for having more Content why you People just except this. I dont get it. Why you cant just demand the same Love for your Franchise? You pay there Bills. Where are the American Independence Fighters xD (joke)

I love Beth games, but my opinion is that their main quest stories are ALWAYS kind of weak. The only thing I remember about Fallout 3's story is that I was born in a vault, dad left the vault, I followed him and then looked for him for a long time, the end. Maybe there was more to the story. Idk.

I don't really care about the main story. I want to 1. Explore. 2. Build some really cool settlements. 3. Kill

That's about it.

Lacking in story? FO4 is the only Fallout game (FO1 and FO2 not only included but especially included) where I don't think the story is lacking.

I can see why gamers, who prefer certain themes and styles, would find it lacking though.
