No Gears of War cover, it ruined Mass Effect and XCOM. Let us crouch behind some stuff as usual or equip proper armor and duke it out. Thankfully trailer had no silly cover so I'm at ease.

When bullets start flying if your not in cover your dead. I would very much like a sort of lean system, that way role playing a trained soldier is easier.
Hmm. Not sure I understand the complaints about XCOM..... grid-movement/turn-based strategy games have pretty much always done cover like that, even before the whole "sticky cover" thing showed up in FPS's.
Yeah I'd like a good cover system. But only usable with light and medium armor.
I suspect they're referring to the XCOM third person shooter, The Bureau.
....ah. That's what I get for not paying closer attention to a series
*sigh* Oh I can't decide... It kinda works, but not completely fluid, probably also because of the stupid "one button to rule them all" in me3.
If I had to actively select "sticking to the wall" rather than the game deciding whether im one pixel to the right or left.
Unless you played FO4 how can you be so sure WHAT the combat portion of the game is now.
Sticky cover mechanic is something mostly implemented due to because of consoles and their limitations to use cover as easy and reactive as with PC games. So I blame sticky cover (which I detest) on consoles.
No, some examples of why a cover system like from GoW and ME dont work:
Thats an interesting theory.
1. Being in cover is always superior to not being behind anything. Even against an enemy that lacks ranged attacks, as they have to clamber over it, or in the case of leaning out from a wall your in a position that is easier to fire from.
2. Withdrawing from cover should be simple enough. Then again I dont see why getting charged by a deathclaw in the open is better then being charged by one while in cover.
3. The whole point is that it gives an advantage. Thats the whole point of fighting, to give yourself every advantage possible so that you dont die. Thats pretty basic. As for it turning into a wait till he pops out thing, if the ai is smart and varied enough that should not be an issue. And anyway, "wait till he pops out" is a thousand times better then "lol lets stand in the open and shoot each other untill one of us is out dps'ed."
4. This is dependent on bethesda designing the map around the mechanic. Which would be silly of them. A simple lean should not require the placement of silly looking objects all over the place. Regardless of how it is done in certain third person shooters.
(thus was typed on a phone, I apologize for grammar and spelling mistakes)
Not against a lean myself, just dont see the need for a full on cover system. Also, being behind a piece of cover when a deathclaw comes at you can lead to the infamous "i want to get out of cover but the game won't let me" problem that many games with this system seem to portray alot, but given, yes there is little difference to it then being in the open when the deathclaw charges, they are just that freakish fast.
edit for grammar
