Fallout 4 leaping behind cover and sticky cover

Post » Fri Nov 27, 2015 11:57 am

Do you guys think there should be any kind of sticky cover or at least the ability to jump behind cover? Or maybe just allow you to put your gun over cover? I think just adding a leaning mechanic would be fine though....what do you guys think?

God no.

I know it's been used in Mass Effect, Xcom etc. and seems popular with developers, but the mechanism is flawed IHMO.

I can't tell you how often I cursed when the stick wouldn't stick or stuck when I simply wanted to vault over a given obstacle. Even worse, stick sticking to the wrong facing of a cover - so now you're stuck right in the line of enemy fire.

I'd much rather just crouch and do it old-school. Much more fluid in my eyes and not breaking my flow of movement.

Fallout also is supposed to be a RPG. Meaning you *should* play a character who relies on attributes and skills rather then my (the players) skill and reflexes. Doesn't matter if I'm 80-year old grandpa with jitters or a 13 year old twitchy kid - if my character has 2 agility he'll be clumsy goof, if she's got 8 agility she's fluidity in motion.

Doesn't Wolfenstein: New World Order have a hybrid cover system where you just duck behind cover old school style but if you aim you pop up out of cover to shoot? None of this sticking to the cover silliness.

I'm replaying F3 right now and I enjoy popping behind cars (non explodable kind!) and other obstructions to avoid enemy fire. So I don't think I would like a cover system.

I've been in a few situations where having a cornering system would have really come in handy.

While I would love a peek system myself(New wolfenstein, new Far Crys), I'm satisfied with how it currently is.

Plus this way you don't get the GoW cover rush as I call it, of sprinting everywhere with a shaky camera, cover to cover to make it feel like youre 'in combat'

No thanks. We don't need the wonderful world design feature of "oh, look. An area littered with convenient waist-high boxes. I wonder if there's going to be a fight triggered here?"

Also, it's not a third-person action-shooter.

Yea I'm also not fond of the overused cover system from GOW that every third person game on the market has now either.

I love Wolfenstein's controls with being able to lean from the sides and even lean under allowing you to shoot underneath a door.

Exactly. The peek system would work well. As said above it's a good hybrid and it's only sticky when you aim over cover!

Sticky cover in an FPS? R6 Vegas did that, it's basically cheating.

I don't want sticky cover but I would like some sort of peak/lean system. That way I can crouch behind cover, and then fire without completely exposing myself.

I understand that they want to improve the shooting aspect of the game, but we don't need to go all the way to make it a down right shooter.

Cover is pointless when you have Power Armor. You're *wearing* your cover then.

NO. I am NOT okay with this idea.

We don't need chest-high walls.

Indeed - though the reflexes of the player are important (and they should be)...still, sticky cover wouldn't fit this game IMHO

Yeah I agree they shouldn't add a cover system.

God no. It's bad enough the new DX uses it and it forces you into 3rd person. Because lean was so hard to use.

Normally I'd be okay with it, but I feel like it would actually hurt the environment. Many games have the classic "waist-high cover" just scattered around the environment, and after a while, it looks dumb. Corners? Sure. Cover that's just large and hard enough to stop bullets? Not common.

Personally, I hate "sticky" cover. I don't like struggling to detach myself if I suddenly get flanked. Just moving behind cover generally works fine for me in first person shooters. I did like the contextual leaning that Crysis 2 introduced if you pull up iron sights while behind cover--it worked well without having additional lean buttons. I wouldn't object to something like that, or a lean system like in the new Wolfenstein games.

i would take some kinda leaning system (i was just thinking of that the last time i played FO3 in fact), but sticky cover is horrid, in mass effect it killed more more times than my own incompetence (which was a major killer)

The cover system in Crysis 2 was very minimal. If Fallout 4 had that I would be impressed.

It's destined to be one, there's no point trying to stop the capitulation

I fully expect Fallout 5 to be a full blow FPS with some RPG mechanics (if Fallout 4 isn't already).
