Fallout 3 List of Crashing and Glitching

Post » Sat Apr 02, 2011 7:02 am

IMPORTANT: This is tough89, I have changed my username to Volunteer Tester, I am not stealing anouther persons work. I have closed my last topic and created a new one.

I will be listing the crashes I encounter below, I want to help Bethesda know what’s happening when the game crashes. I want to see this game get better, I want to see the crashing and freezing go away, I want to have fun playing this game, and be able to continue playing after I have beat it.

A little about me and the version of the game I own:
I own the original Fallout 3 Version 1.61. for Playstation 3 with the 5 expansion packs downloaded. It freezes all the time, in combat, in VATS, freezes on quick travel, freezes on wait, freezes when entering or exiting a building, freezes when purchasing items in shops, and freezes when loading a game sometimes. It doesn't crash all the time, but very often, it can go a couple hours without freezing, or freeze every 10-15 minutes. Please make a patch to fix this freezing problem, your fans deserve it, it makes a great game not fun to play. It would make this fan very happy if you did.

I'm a scavanger, and a looter, I collect everything in value, I'm over 100k caps now, and I have thousands of ammo in each type. I also have 100s of guns for spare parts and tons of items in my house. I'm not sure if looting less will make the game freeze less but maybe.

Glitches and other crashes:
- I've noticed a glitch when you are about to take your G.O.A.T. exam, it won't continue with the exam, you have to save and reload to make it work.
- When starting the Mothership Zeta expansion it freezes up every time, I can't remember what I did to get by that.
- It seems the bigger the save file the more it freezes, my 19MB save game is almost unplayable, and sometimes won't even load. I started a new game, it freezes less, it's 9MB. If this is the case, maybe there's a way to reduce the file size, removed old notes, remove finished quests from the quest group?
- I've noticed a problem about the Lawbringer Perk, evil people won't always drop fingers. I do have followers and sometimes they kill them, but shouldn't they still drop fingers on their dead bodies?
- Noticed it's laggy around the houses near the Corvega Factory.
- It's laggy and freezes often near the Enclave group near Springvale.
- A Glowing One, and Feral Ghoul Reaver outside near the Corvega Factory, is that normal?
- Extreme lag after leaving the Generals tent in Operation Anchorage. The game froze but after reloading it went away. I also noticed a very bad glitch when entering the outcast outpost just before starting this quest, it's hard to explain but the screen went all white with black lines through it in certain parts of the bunker.

List of Game Crashes:
Note: Fawks and Star Paladin Cross will be with me in each crash. (Not sure how I got two followers, but this is not the problem, it has frozen before with one follower and also without any followers. I'm also using all the autosaves.)

Note: I'm starting to think the game has a loading problem, maybe it's trying to load way to much at once and then it crashes, it seems the crashes can happen anywhere, and isn't specifically tied to one place.

1) After I left the Nation Guard Depot and collecting everything from the building and armoury, I quick traveled to Megaton, when I tried to enter my Megaton house to store my loot, the game froze.

2) I quick traveled to Andale and walked north-west to Fort Independence. After killing the raiders and talking to Defender Morgan, I walked through the gate to speak to Protector Casdin and the game froze, this happened twice. The first time it crashed the time was about 9PM in game, the second time I tried changing the time to see if it wouldn't crash, the time was around 11 am but still crashed, the third time I attempted to do this it didn't freeze, but was still laggy and I noticed a glitch about the bridge, the middle section was missing and the Turret was just floating there, after speaking with Casdin the glitch went away.

3) After leaving Fort Independence I walked towards Fairfax Ruins and killed a couple of Raiders, when I tried to loot one of them the game froze for about 15 seconds, didn't crash this time though.

4) After loading the game near vault 87 the game froze when walking towards 3 super mutants. This happened twice after loading. (I was also able to discover vault 87 on the map with a lot of rad aways just before the freezing happened. Maybe this has something to do with the consistent freezing in the area?) Amazed at the radiation levels 500+ a second with a resistance of 85% to radiation.

5) Froze after loading and quick traveling to abandoned car fort and walking a little bit south.

Note: Okay so I don't know how I did it, but now I have 3 followers, Fawks, Star Paladin Cross and Dogmeat. They will be with me for the rest of the crashes.

6) After quick traveling from Megaton to Vault 101 I walked north-east to a group of Enclave, I killed them and looted them, then walked north-west around vault 101 and the game froze coming up close to an enemy. The game always seems glitchy and slow near that group of Enclave.

7) When walking from SatCom Array NW-07c to Shalebridge the game froze when going into VATS. I had killed a few Enclave at the SatCom, a Deathclaw, a Yao Guai, a Giant Radscorpion, and a Sentry Bot on the way to Shalebridge. I had looted them to.

8) Froze when discovering Shalebridge, repeated my actions from last time, but tried waiting 4 hours until it got light out to see if that made a difference, it seems to freeze a lot in this area.

9) Froze near Shalebridge again, tried waiting until 10 am, and when I walked towards a glitch, it froze. A piece of the rocky landscape was missing.

Note: At this point, I'm level 27 and my save file is 11MB.

10) Crashed but unfroze shortly after killing a Gaint Soldier Ant in VATS in the Corvega Factory.

Note: I Have no followers at this point.

11) There was extreme lag after leaving the Generals tent, and after walking past my strike team the game froze in Operation Anchorage.

12) The game froze up after going into VATS and targeting a Chinese soldiers head, on the way to the ice feild in Operation Anchorage.

Note: I'm level 30 now and my save file is 12MB

13) Froze after quick traveling from the Citadel to The Republic of Dave, the game started to lag after I completed the quest Death From Above.

I have all the same issues with it on my PS3. I love this game but it is so frustrating to play. The game and has been out for years yet there has not been a fix. The lack of support for such a great game and loyal customers is so wrong. It is why I will not buy the next version of this game.

Yea it saddens me that this great game is so bugged and always freezes, I'm doing this so maybe they will see how bad the problems are, and maybe help to contribute to make a new patch to fix the freezing, I would like to see a fix for it, and be able to play without it freezing. The last time they made a patch was about a year ago, I think it's time for a new one.

I keep getting logged out of these forums when I go to edit my post, why is that? I'm inactive sometimes while playing fallout 3 and posting when it freezes, is there an auto logout timer?

Point Lookout has been a mess for me, not only does it freeze whenever I try to get near the boardwalk, but its filled with stalls (10 second freezes), slowdown, and [censored] just hovering and flying around to an absurd degree. The main game was no where near this bad. I fear my game is broken, since I can not reach the Ferris Wheel for the main quest in PL nor can I return to the Capital Wasteland.

I understand that F3 was developed for the PC, and easily ported to the 360, I also understand that the PS3 is an entirely different beast and programming it properly for a simultaneous release was more than likely improbable and expensive. Bethseda is a business, I understand. All I can say is that I will NOT be purchasing any more DLC for this game, because the one I did buy has been such a disaster, and I will not be buying New Vegas if I hear that the PS3 port has the same issues as it's predecessor. Fool me once, Betheseda.

Game of the year edition on Ps3 just randomly freezes. It has started doing this sometime after I first went to project purity to look for Dad.

Since that point It randomly locks up while I'm walking around, shooting something Via v.a.t.s., or going through a door. It did this one time when I initiated dialogue with Harold too.
Before that it was great. But not anymore.

Took me a few hours of trying to finally get past the intro on the Mothership Zeta add on. For a while it ran choppy. Was ok after that, once I left Zeta, it went downhill again.

Took me 2 days between freezings to clear enough of point lookout to get the Ps3 trophies and the perks that come out of that Add on.

I'm going to be depressed if the missions with Liberty Prime are as unbearable as the game's been lately. Those parts were awesome.

I've ran through every suggestion I could find to help with the problem. Between saving and reloading, deleting the game data file(several times), and simply letting my ps3 sit turned off for a while.

*sadface*

I think I'm going to go return this ps3 copy to the BestBuy and get something else.... I'll have to survive with the nearly as glitchy xb version.

Arghh You stole all my solutions!!!

Here is another glitch.

Sometimes the door to GNR will be locked even after you do the requirements. The only way to get into is to climb up over these rocks to the right of the building. Then jump onto the balcony. From there are 2 locked doors requiring 100 lock pick skill. Its the only way in but its possible.

Yah a patch would be nice. But I don't think they can patch this game for PS3 with the lag and freezing. I don't think the game engine can manage the lower memory of the PS3, I think New Vegas will be better cause they are developing it at the same time, it seems with Fallout 3 it was just ported over with the crappiest testers.

A little patch could fix a lot of scripting issues, like the lone enclave hanging around Super Duper Mart, Three Dog talking about events, MZ opening intro, the GOAT test and any thing small like that.

In my game (in the 8 Mb), I only had frame slow downs, in Operation Anchorage (outside the tent and infront of the bombarded field).
Besides that, I only had some minor froze (not in Operation Anchorage).

So for now, in broken steel, it's going well.

How I got around the Mothership Zeta lockups

Before getting so close as to trigger your abduction, make a game save reboot PS3 and reload game until lock up does not happen. I found that during the initial abduction sequence (getting beamed up and while your inspected by the aliens initially) I found that just about every time you can get through with out lock up if you don't make any controller inputs, and every time I try looking around or hitting a button lock up would ensue. Hope that helps.

Dont you ppl get it? *sigh* There will be NO patch, a patch is something you put on a scratch NOT on an arterial internal hemorrhage!

Your not helping anything either by saying that.

Look, I'm helping in a sense of just forget it and get over it, there is nothing you can do.

I tried it all: deleting cache by pressing L2 + R2 + Square, resetting and deleting game data, conserving a minimal of items in inventory, not using energy based weapons because of the goo pile glitch, turning off auto save, no fast travel, turning off radio stations while playing, go easy on VATS targeting, let the game load for 1/2 hour when entering new area, pressing XMB menu button before potential glitching/freezing, only using a maximum of 3 save slots and not overwriting old saves by deleting them from ps3 memory card menu first, using USB connection for controler, disabling PSN, changing in-game menu settings, changing options in main ps3 menu including video settings, cooling my console and [censored] knows what else... Pfff!!! This is not my interpretation of enjoying a computer game.

Okay I admit, some measures above did help a little but it justs prolongs the game time a bit until the fatal freeze of death.

If I had a magic wand that could fix this piece of junk, I would. Plus everyone here will be notified how I've done it ASAP but the reality is Fallout for the ps3 is broken. Save games reaching 10MB+ and POOF! It's game over! I'm really sorry but it's as simple as that and a patch wont fix this. The only remedy I have found thus far is installing FO3 on my pc and even on this platform it's a glitchy mess sometimes but reparable to an higher extend. And if I'm not mistaken I believe glitches like the GOAT test started to occur after the latest patches like 1.6, maybe patch 1.7 in other words some patches made it even worse.

Anyways, post whatever you want I think gamesas got the message by now, after 2.5 years. Only problem is they don't reply and when they occasionally do so it's 99.99% utterly useless!

Return to Fallout 3
