Fallout 4 logically not possible?

at least not according to the normal "centered around working vaults" storyline...

i mean... vault 101 was the only one left unopened wasnt it?

Doesn't matter. Fallout 3 used only the lore left by Fallout 1 and 2, the story as well as the location are standalone. So for the next Fallout, they could choose a different location again, or a vault that was in Fallout 3. They just have to decide if they make a sequel or a prequel based on the ingame time (2277). And remember, in Fallout 2 you weren't a Vault Dweller and didn't start out in a Vault.

So? Then center it around vaults. For instance, create a storyline of a vault dweller from vault 112 set in , I don't know, the year 2234, when it was still closed or something. Or go the Fallout 2 way: the protagonist from Fallout 3 has an ancestor living in a town around washington DC. There are still lots of possibilities. And since
Spoiler
Vault 101 was supposed to be closed for eternity but apparently your father was able to get in right after your birth
storywise there shouldn't be much trouble. Besides, who says they can't develop a story about a Vault that was opened and used it's GECK to create a city. I'm visualising it right now: "It is home. Your home."

There's no standing rule that future Fallouts have to be centered or even based in and around Vaults. Given how completely unimportant Vault 101 becomes after you leave it, I honestly suspect the whole purpose of Vault 101 in the first place was to allow players to understand the "Control Group" Vault Life. Vault 13, Vault 101...both are very stable communities with no major mishaps designed into the Vault.

It's the experiences of "normal" life in a Vault that makes the likes of Vault 15 and Vault 92 so horrifying.

Now that new comers to the series have a grasp of what it's like to be a Vault Dweller (And plenty of experience with the typical rank and file "experiments" that comprised the other Vaults), there's no need to center a character around them any longer.

Truth be told? I hope Fallout 4's Tutorial/Character Creation section showcases what growing up in the Wasteland is like.

There are about 100 vaults that have never been mentioned in lore.

Who knows if they opened or not.

All we know is that 101 wasnt designed to open, not that it was last.

Fallout 2 did not have a vault dweller, and Van Buren wasnt even going to have a vault descendent.

why not follow Capcom's example that successfully revamped the classic Resident Evil 1 (only for GC sadly), or Tomb Raider Anniversary; create FO1 or FO2 using the FO3 engine :)
I certainly would enjoy it more

Would be a good idea except you saw all that backlash against Bethesda for making a sequel of Fallout? Imagine if they made a remake. The internet would implode!

I'm just wondering where they'd set it.

The only logical location would be around new york and... well, I can't imagine too many people would be enthusiastic about depicting that in ruins

Well yeah, but who wants to play the post apocalyptic version of south carolina?

And if you're doing new england, it would be a bit silly to not have new york

I dont know about the rest of the world in fallout but as for the vaults go , they are all experiments like vault 101 which was never ment to be opened.

i dont think all of the vaults have been opened, unless you can tell me that all 122 vaults have appeared in all the fallout games. 122 is the total number of commisioned vaults that vault-tec has built, they could easily have some uncommisioned vaults.

Spoiler
my understanding is from fallout 1 and 2 , also fallout tactcs BOS

FO1 = you save the vault and cast out to wander the wastelands and eventually create a village, and die elsewhere
FO2 = you save the village and cast out and wander..

FO TBOS = you have a choices about
You joining with supercomputer
joing with a supercomputer and creating peace and good utopia, between , ghouls , humans (BOS) , deathclaws , and outlaws (raiders)
shutting down and destroying the computer , BOS scarred but successful and in control , partial utopia.
joing with the supercomputer and creating a robotic army, with the BOS elders eliminated, and supercomputer leader, bad utopia

Or
NPC joins with supercomputer , BOS slavers and slaving of mutans. mutant liberation amy driven to old BOS.

All endings have to deal with the old style BOS to the west from FO1 and FO2 at somepoint.
This is set on the other side of the mountain range east of the FO1 and FO2 ares, in the west pst apocolypse USA.

So as for the vaults go not all of post apocolypse USA has been covered so i would imagine there many more vaults to open.

Spoiler
Well any future games will not have a main character related to the one in FO3 because of the mixed endings, what with a few of them leaving you dead.
Whatever comes next will no doubt be a good sequel, whether they choose to do it as a vault, slave child, BoS initiate, retired raider.. obviously the location will end up being based around a major city again as you dont want to wander around nothingness with only a handfull of points of interest.

No need for a game to be set in north Jersey. It's well known it's pretty much a Wasteland.

Fallout 2 was in the west coast.... but I think it would be cool if they redid fallout 1 & 2. And remember each vault has a story so anything they do will sure have a cool story, and maybe this time you start to rebuild the country. And posible places could be chicago area, st. louis, new york, and texas.

A remake of FO1/2 would actually make me pretty angry. I don't mind references to any part of the games but a remake would just take away from how special those games really were. The only way I would like a remake of either game would be if it was modded by a player I just think the results would be more pleasing, and im sure you would rather Beth worked on a new story instead of copying one that a large number of FO fans will have played numerous times.

Do one where you start of as a wastelander... and let the player grow up in the rough wasteland... and make growing up a little bigger part of the gamer, would be nice to actually play a little and do some quests, get to know people who will be around when you are grown up and so on...

at least i would love that

would be nice to have the old BOS from FO1 and FO2 knowledge and tech horders meet a very different BOS from FOT:BOS (good ending or one of the bad endings) and put in the enclave as well with a few vaults.

Vault-Tec made millions on the vaults from government contracts. Do you honestly think there wasn't a single copycat?
There could have been Max-Vault, Vault-Guard, and even a Safe-Vault.
Each making 100 of their own vaults.

There could be hundreds of vaults strewen throughout populous areas!

You think that the people wouldn't be capable of multiplying 112 *1000 and coming up with less than 1 million?

Space for 112000 would cover 1/4 of the population of Colorado Springs, where I live. If MAD was a major threat, you can be sure at least 1 person in this city would have the brilliant idea to create a few vaults around the area and sell it to the people here.

(Edit: Just thought I'd mention, the fire drill fatigue mentioned would require people to have many fire drills. How better to strike home the need for more exits then telling people to practice for a burning house?)

What would be ironic is having a game set near the nuclear missile silos in North Dakota.
