Well with the advancement in technology i would assume the map size in Fo4 would be around twice the size of Skyrim at least if i were to guess. I mean i hope it is anyway.

I'm concerned about the size of the settlements.

The "cities" in Skyrim were more like villages, and the "villages" were two houses.

This is pure rumor and not confirmed, but...

There's a "leak" that lines up well with what we've seen thusfar. It claims FO4 will be sizeable and be 2-3 times the size of Skyrim. Whether that's physical size (the map) or metaphorical (content) isn't clarified though, and it should be noted that even if that "leak" is to be trusted, it's dated by about a year, so there could've been cuts by now.

Just from the short glimpses it looked like the towns had town squares that were bigger than the cities in Skyrim. That could be a good sign.

All I can say is, judging by the trailer the map sure DOES look big.

We have mountains/hills, a huge City (Boston), <-which doesn't look small at all....compared to Whiterun or something, countryside, desert-like locations, shore (notice the stranded sub-marine in the trailer), forests...ro better said whats left of them, small rural villages.

I think the map can and will be bigger than eg. Skyrim.

edit: and DAYUM I hope you can explore all of these sky scraqers, all the way to the top, unlikely though...but maybe...

Greetings...

...What I wonder is not the size because I know for a fact it will be huge. But how many detailed this whole world will be besides the story behind every station, house, buildings etc. Hidden places and underground tunnels, subway? That is the locations that I wonder much about and hope the scale of it all not only match the map but sync very nicely this time around.

P.s. Cheers.

Diamond City looks to be comparable to Megaton, but there are definitely some really heavily urbanized areas. Some of it looks like as vast as downtown DC, but with people instead of mutants. :P

Bethesda's settlements typically have fewer NPCs, but the NPCs themselves (at least as of Skyrim) have much more characterization than the generic crowds in other games. Not to mention there are performance constraints; these NPCs have AI that accounts for stealth and combat, their own inventories and equipment, dynamic interactions with other NPCs, and just as many stats to measure as the player character.

I"m hoping that it's so big that people will complain about it being too big.

Looks pretty damn big. Plenty of different environments and cities to behold. Only thing I'm worried about is when the (presumably) player is emerging from the vault-thing at 1:36 we can see a little shanty town nearby but more perplexingly there's stone pillars in the distance and the town right afterwards at 1:37 has pillars very reminiscent of the ones seen in the distance. So, is it the same town? Coincidence? Maybe it's a starting town like Megaton? Why is it so close?

Maybe that's what the vertibirds are for. :P

however they could use that advancement to focus on adding twice as much detail rather than increasing the size of the map.

yeah, an issue i've had with TES games for a while. settlements are often disappointingly small and uninteresting

I'd like to see a massive map for this reason:

Pilot-able Vehicles (only problem with this would mean that the Sandbox would have to be Huge - or make the vehicles slow and inefficient with late game mechanics enabling you to buy engine upgrades or required suspension for going over rough terrain etc.)

While I would agree that in some ways that would be very cool, I very highly doubt it will happen. They don't have a very good track record of making "vehicles" work well

Hah, not nearly enough info to tell. Fingers crossed for it being big enough to poke around for 100+ hours though.

I hope it's sizable, and filled with appropriate content. Those who say it may be 2-3x bigger than Skyrim, I doubt it. Just look at the previous Bethesda game words compared to Skyrim. Oblivion's is actually larger, Fallout 3 is smaller for sure, Morrowind is smaller, but with a larger scale.

I would rather the game be narrow and deep as opposed to wide and shallow.

Wide and deep would obviously be optimal, though!

I'm thinking it will be something around 3/4 of the Witcher 3 map. Although with Fallout there will obviously be a lot more in the space so it'll probably be a little bit smaller but we can only hope.

As long as it is similar to previous games it should be fine. The size of Boston looks like something Bethesda hasn't done before, though.
