Fallout 4 map too small?

Post » Wed Dec 02, 2015 5:45 pm

I think folks are severely undermining the size of skyrim. Skyrim was pretty big if you traveled everywhere on foot or horse. I think most grew accustomed to fast traveling and in the process lost the sense of scale.

I think people criticizing the map size are insane. Oblivion was a big, detailed world. Skyrim was a bigger, more detailed world. Fallout 4 will be approximately the same size of Skyrim, and will be more detailed than either Skyrim or Fallout 3.

Not to mention that Bethesda is known for their epic DLC that often takes place in new locations that aren't on the map, thus increasing the total world size.

There is NOTHING to worry about.

its not the same playable area... the mountains in skyrim take up half the playable area, fallout 4 is unimpeded by that problem it has over 30 sq miles of playable area and skyrim has 15...the map itself is about the same size but the mountains occupy at least half the map so its not playable area.

all i know is i felt fallout 3 map was huge, so if fallout 4 is anywhere close to 2x as big...crap man, that will be more than enough map for me.

That's nice to hear. I've not read much about the game (trying to avoid most spoilers.) Yeah in Skyrim I would go wolf form and run from one end of the map to the other, only stopping to feed and remain in beast form, and it took a bit. So this is still exciting to me, especially considering I'll be questing and exploring so in the words of someone somewhere, "I aint scurred!"

At the same density and detail, of course bigger equals better.

Anyway, the map seems adequate.

I just hope we won't see many buildings without interiors....

The map surely feels very small. And the promised "dense content" is only slightly denser than Fallout 3. The locations on the other hand have pretty neat verticality to them for the most part.

How can it feel small from watching leaked footage? The only way you could say this with any authority is if you'd actually played the game yourself.

Yeah, and given how there's a 27 GB download you bet it has more content then Skyrim and any previous TES or FO title.

The map image the OP linked could have been photoshoped btw.

From the Fallout 4 launch party:

Particularly of note at 0:51 "The game is enormous". The way some of you guys are going on makes it sound like it's a COD multiplayer map. The gameworld took four years to build!

I really don't understand why people are worrying over things like this. I can barely contain my excitement, it's only a few days away and pre downloaded on my PC.

Why is that?

Was Skyrim not big?

This map is similar.

The worriers are excited too--that excitement is just taking the form of anxiety.

Don't know if you are or have been married, but this reminds me of the run-up to a wedding. People fret:

"The catering will be bad!"
"My bridesmaids are slacking off!"
"What if it rains!?"
"What if the DJ is bad? It will spoil the guests' immersion!!"

And then lo and behold, the day comes, and sure, there are a few glitches, and some things aren't perfect. But it still turns out to be a joyous occasion.

i suppose children could be considered a full-on expansion. I'm expecting two (our first) in December. I'm so pleased this game is coming out this year and not next year, I can't even tell you.

@Plathismo....... Congrats.

Enjoy them while they're little, because when they become teenagers, they become a pain in the rear ;-)

Thanks! I'm dedicating my first play through to my daughter and naming my first character after her--Selene. I'd do the same for my son but my wife and I can't agree on his name.

@Plathismo.
Ha, that's pretty funny because that's exactly what I did in Fallout 3 and NV, had 4 playthroughs and named my character after my kid's.

I would be ok with just another fallout 3 size map, felt plenty big for me. Knowing we are getting more than that is more than satisfactory.

Just please have some content fill that space up nicely. That's what really matters.
