Fallout as an MMORPG

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 11:18 am

I have been sitting here reading some posts and I was just thinking back on my Fallout 1 and 2 days. (Still havent got Fallout 3 but will very soon). I started thinking how absolutley amazing Fallout could be as an MMORPG... think of the sizes of the world in MMO's... they are HUGE... and Fallout is made to be in a HUGE world.

If you have ever played in MMORPG... think about how PERFECT the theme of Fallout would be in an MMO.

NO! And there's already a friggin Fallout mmo in the works and Fallout will die with it. It's so sad that only a nobody with a tie in some office could come up with an idea such as this.

Interplay is working on one already. Doesn't seem like a good idea to me...a barren wasteland filled with hundreds of teenage griefers and beggars asking for money? No thanks.

NPC: "Go out and kill 10 critters and return to me. I'll unlock this dungeon for you!"
Player: "[censored] you! This is Fallout, I'll do whatever the hell I want! I'm gonna lockpick that [censored] and shoot you in the head when I'm done!"
NPC: Sorry! I cast a spell on the door to keep the critters out and if you want in .. You have to kill 10 critters and return to me!"
Player: "Quit"
NPC: "!"

Fo3 as an MMO would fail.

FOOL looks like it might have a chance and I suggest trying FOonline. (2 different games)

Fallout itself as an online game would be horrible hard to realize. The complexity of quests and problem solutions (how do i get this item? kill/steal/speech/quest etc.) will suffer, that is for sure. If FOOL would have linear quests, i won't play it.

Fallen Earth is probably the closest thing to a Fallout MMO bar an actual Fallout MMO. I've been in the alpha for it for 4 months or so now and it is shaping up quite well.

Just as when I hear that Beth were making Fallout 3, I'm torn. The fact that Interplay are planning on making the MMO really doesn't tell me all that much, but apparently a lot of the original creators of Fallout are going to be involved.

Worst case scenario? World of Warcraft or Guild Wars with a Fallout skin.

Best case scenario? An MMO where your character can make some damn diffrence. Maybe found a little town with some friends or get a kid or something.

Sadly I think we're probably looking at a watered-down, kid-friendly Wow- clone. I can just hear it now... "I want you to bring me twenty jars of Caddie Clogs's Car Wax so I can shine my Vertibird up a bit. They're usually found on the Super-Duper Mutants who roam around just over that hill over there for no apparent reason"

This, among about 1000 other reasons, is why I only played WoW for a week.

Too many people think that all MMOs are and have to be like WoW. WoW is by far the simplest incarnation of an MMO and it is quite unfair to base your judgment off of that single game. There were plenty of good MMOs that were changed to cater to a new audience or killed off because they didn't have mass appeal anymore.

Early versions of Ultima Online, Everquest, and Star Wars Galaxies are among the best I have played. EVE is another that doesn't fit in the traditional groove and its one of the last bastions of unforgiving gameplay in MMOs.

I do, however, understand why someone wouldn't want anyone to even attempt it. Making a bad MMO is the quickest way to taint a franchise.

Fallout will not work as an MMO, its a bad idea and will do nothing but HURT the name of fallout... i mean Huxley is basicaly fallout MMO... and i guartee with planetside roots and nexgen graphics backing it up it cant do any worse then Conan...

but if Huxley fails.. fallout MMO will undoubtly fail... i mean look at tabula rasa... wicked concept, alot of fun... no ones playing... and it could be worse... coughHELLGATEcough

I would like to see a direct connect TCP/IP mode so that you could play co-op with a friend over the internet or LAN, but mmorpg? nah

I haven't played a single mmorpg that I thought was any good at all (including wow which bores me to tears). They seem to be mostly about 12 year olds who want to prove which one of them can talk the most trash and speak the least coherent English.

Huh? I don't understand the correlation between the two.

One is an Asian class-based shooter MMO and the other a post apocalyptic RPG. Not to mention Huxley is attempting a cross-platform release which has failed for every other title that attempted such.

edit: Oops. Dystopia.

Either way; they have relatively little in common as far as lore and history goes.

The topic you're speaking of...

http://www.gamesas.com/bgsforums/index.php?showtopic=909580

Is different from what this person is speaking of though the MMORPG thing came up in the topic, it wasn't about a MMORPG.

Now to my opinion:

I think it would be a pretty cool idea though they would have to be pretty careful on how they implement it.

And no making a FallOut MMORPG would not kill the series. Seriously no need to grief.

Eve is one of the best MMO that emphasize on player economics and 'team work'. Its a free for all game that you can do basically anything in the game. The gameplay of Eve and combat is the weakpoint but they probably can't give more to it with the mass amount of active player on a single server.

CCP Whitewolf is currently making World of Darkness Online which based on the Eve engine.

FO setting MMO sounds 'ok' if its done right.

Definitely agreed. I think it'd have to bring a whole lot of new mechanics to the table to work but I do think it is possible. I don't think it will happen, though.

FO + MMO = NO.

And that's not even taking into account that I loathe and despise MMOs in general.

I can see it now.

I've been walking across the wasteland for a week, tracking down a specific NPC to complete a quest. Problem is, I don't have a real great idea where to look. The sun is beating down, when suddenly I catch a glimpse of a lens flare across the valley. Yeah, thats definitely him. I hit stealth and sneak around the long way to try to get him off guard. It takes me a good 10 minutes to sneak up to. I bring my hunting rifle up to my eye, as I go to pull the trigger A NAKED GUY RUNS OUT IN FRONT OF ME AND SAYS LOLOLL NOOOB!!!!! HAHAHAAHA

Yeah, no thanks.

fallout...mmo...lol wut? it wouldnt work well, at all. ive played many mmo's and this...no, wouldnt be a good idea. bethesda needs to stick to singleplayer games, its like quitting a job that brings in 100k+ a year, to a job that brings in 60k most a year. smart move? i dont think so. WoW WAS and i mean WAS good, now too many little [censored]es play it. guild wars was good a year or 2 after it started, now, no. eve is a decent game, i just dont feel like playing it. anarchy online is really good, but its just so [censored]in huge. bottomline, bethesda needs to stay w/ offline rpgs, yea the co-op idea for their rpgs would be interesting, but they better stear away from the thought of an mmo.
