Fallout Multiplayer. Is it possible? Is it wanted?

I have played numerous large MMOs because I love Roleplaying games. I started with AD&D, Cyberpunk, Shadowrun and other tabletop RPGs using dice and paper rather than computer graphics. I have been disappointed with every one that I have played because the majority of people who play MMOs seem to want hack & slash games rather than storyline and roleplaying. This is one of the reasons why I love the Fallout universe as well as the Morrowind and Oblivion universe.

That having been said, I have friends who play Fallout, Morrowind and Oblivion too and while it is nice to hear what they did in their games, I would really like to go around the worlds with them. Turning Fallout 3 or New Vegas into an MMO would be awful in my opinion. Don't believe me, play Fallen Earth and you will. What I would like to see is a game of Fallout New Vegas which looks and plays almost exactly the same as now except make it so that maybe up to 5 people can play the game at the same time.

The only aspect of the game that would need any real tweaking would be the interaction with computer controlled characters. When you first build a character there could be a choice of different voices. Then when you interact with an computer character you would not only hear their response but you would hear yourself asking the question. This way any other character within hearing range would still gain info from the conversation as though they had the conversation themself. The benefit of doing it this way would be that you would not need every person in the game to repeat the same conversation just so that they all get on the same quest.

I think this could be a lot of fun. I don't know if it is actually possible but if it were it would add an interesting element to the game. The Fallout world would be more fun to explore in a group rather than as an individual.

What do people think? Is this possible? And if it is, would anyone be interested in it?

There have been two conversion attempts to make Morrowind and Oblivion into a MMO.

Both failed before getting out of early beta stages.

If history is any guide, it may be possible to convert Fallout 3 or New Vegas into a MMO, but it's too difficult for anybody but a group of gifted and truly dedicated team of modders to perform, as major aspects of the code for the game needs to be re-written to handle MMO loads.

i agree. I love the idea. I think for a while there was a rumor that they actually tried to do that with new vegas. But it didn't turn out so well.
