Fallout: New Bogus

Post » Fri Oct 01, 2010 1:37 am

Fallout is going down the same road it did with Fallout 3, sadly, but this time I actually believe it is even worse. This time around in Fallout: New Vegas, the bugs aren't framerate issues and random times where VATS just doesn't work; no, these are much more severe--at least for me.

Traders eat your caps and never give you your purchase, framerate drops severely in combat, VATS gets disabled spontaneously... all times where I've found myself rubbing my aching forehead in pity at the game, frustrated at the lack of tender loving care of the final product--again. However, one thing that just recently happened made my jaw drop in both awe and confusion. I will explain below.

Tonight I decided to play again. I've sunken pretty low into the game's plot, racking up almost twenty hours of playtime. To most, that's laughable, but with schoolwork and other life obstacles (such as brothers wanting to play) that's a lot of hours for myself. I turned on my Xbox, popped in the disc, grooved on over to the title screen, then scrolled to the "Continue" button and pressed A. I get the usual loading screen, but then it just stops. That little spinning loading icon freezes, and the entire thing freezes. I had a thought: "Well, this is just Fallout being Fallout. Can't be that bad!" So, I simply shut off the Xbox and turn it back on again. Back to the title screen, repeated the process--same outcome. I turn it off again, and get back to the title screen after a frustrated huff. I try to cheat the system and scroll down to "Load." I thought that it might be my last save that was somehow... um... dead, so I loaded the save before that, and that save wouldn't lose me any sort of progress. I had high hopes. Sadly, this message appeared half way through the loading screen:

"This save game relies on downloadable content that is no longer available. Some objects may be no longer available. Continue loading? (YES) (NO)"

Odd message is odd. I just choose "(YES)" because there wasn't any downloadable content that I knew of. No dice, says Fallout: New Vegas:

"This storage device you selected is no longer available. Load canceled. (OK)"

I get dragged back to the title screen. I tried multiple times to load on previous saves, but none of them worked. Must I really start a new game just because of a dumb bug that Bethesda or Obsidian (I don't know whom) couldn't control? This is a very, VERY serious bug that SOMEONE needs to fix. I don't know if this is happening to anyone else, but I know that I'm not liking it--and neither would you if you've felt you progressed enough only to get slapped in the face by your own paid-for game.

Please, if someone knows how to get rid of this monstrosity of a bug, please slide the step-by-step my way. If not, then I'll just wait eagerly for a patch to come along and fix this. Any help is great!

P.S.: Yes, I do have it installed to the harddrive of my Xbox 360, if that helps or narrows the possible remedies down.

TL;DR

My game will not load my saves from the harddrive and I cannot play the game at all--it just goes to the loading screen and freezes or sends me back to the title screen. Please help!

Well, mine is buggy, and it's a problem. Don't rub it in.

I made sure to never turn it off during gameplay; I only turned it off during the title screen. I don't see how this saving problem could be a factor in my situation.

Have you gone back online to get the 2 patches that came out the second day?

Yes, my game is up-to-date with all the patches, I think. My brother with the Xbox Live account played on his Fallout account and no option for a patch came up.

Yes one thing bad about the 360 (not flame fodder) is that you can't exactly see what you are downloading. On my PS3, when I typed in the code, I saw 2 downloads. One was the classic pack (at XXXXKB) and a French version of the pack weighing in at 15MB, so I only downloaded the first one. Maybe you downloaded a different country's version of the DLC and your 360 is rejecting it.

Hmm.. Perhaps, I'll check up on that. But if that's not the case, do you have any other idea why my file is not loading?

No unfortunately. I barely use my 360 and I don't know much about the system. But I remember a lot of people complaining about this and it should get patched very soon. :)

Do you at least know how I can check if I accidently downloaded foreign content?

Maybe it was a fluke with me, but can you check the size of the DLC? If it is more then 1MB (not the installed game on the system) then that might be your problem. But I would probably just wait it out till the patch if you're lazy like me.

Oh, the downloaded content for the Classic Pack is 3.93MB. Should I delete it and redownload?

Wow, that is really unlucky. I don't know about how to recover your current saves, but for future reference - perhaps invest in a Xbox save back-up adapter of some sort?

What is a "Xbox save back-up adapter" and what does it do exactly?

I tried deleting the Classic Pack and my game was able to start loading without sending me back to the title screen, but my game still froze during the loading.

I'm going to bed for now, I hope to return to this Topic with some helpful advice.

It's running just fine for me. Steam says 62 hours in-game and I've had three or four crashes total. No gamebreakers, either.
