Fallout: New Vegas and quicksaving

Post » Wed Sep 01, 2010 9:06 pm

So yeah, Fallout 3 and quicksaving + quickloading = bad times. Will New Vegas have the same problem, or is it a problem with the Gamebryo engine itself?

Hmm, well, you should be glad you didn't. It was a... broken system. I hope it isn't like that in NV.

Nothing is going to change. Somebody... Hines... Somebody Hines. Todd, maybe? Anyway, he said that they can't, and wouldn't, do anything to keep people from quicksaving. His justification was that if people want to go back and make a different choice, or pick a lock, then they should be able to.

I happen to agree. We are only robbing ourselves by quicksaving. It's like playing a tabletop RPG, rolling a crappy number, and re-rolling. No fun.

You know there are other reason to quick save, due the engine the game likes to crash randomly, which only gets worse when a PC player uses mods.

I never had any problems with quicksaving/quickloading, myself.

Aside from accidentally hitting the quickload button once or twice. :swear:

Sorry, I guess I worded it wrong.

What I mean is, I felt that crashes alot of the time were associated with quicksaving/loading, and I was wondering if they did anything to help with that.

Nothing. It's quicksaving/quickloading that's the thing I never had a problem with.

FRAPS. It has hotkeys there. I've remapped them since then, however.

If all you ever use is quicksave then you run the risk of corrupting the quicksave file, but that is rare. I never had any issues, but then, I usually take time to make a proper save and make multiple ones at that.

If you are relying on autosave and quicksave then you are gunning for trouble anyway.

the game crashing for pc users was a big problem tho diff solution were found depending on system and configuration to fix it its easy when your making a game for a console as each console has the same exact os and hardrware each pc is different so there will always be issues that must be tweeked and patched to fix take windows vista for example alot of my crashes in fo3 were due to vista 64 beinga 64 bit system while fo3 is set as a 32 bit game had to do some searching to find the fix for it so there might be some who have issues with nv

This is true. I never used quicksave/quickload much, and when I did I never had problems. And even if the quicksave file was corrupted I could just revert to my closest autosave or "proper" save. t's not really a big problem unless you rely on quicksaving exclusively. And that's something that you should never, ever do.

Hmm... so it could be because I quicksaved literally every few seconds. Makes sense that it would crash as much as it did... lesson learned I think. :tops:

It's a legacy of the engine. It was in Oblivion, and was still present for FO3, so it's safe to assume that it will be in NV.

I too make all manual saves and disable all auto-saves. I lost my first major playthrough of Oblivion to this bug -twice-. I just toss all but a few of the most recent in a max compression .7z at the end of a session.

What is the advantage of disabling autosaves?

The only problem I ever had with quicksaves was halfway through my total hours, the game ran into a bug and now it always saves right before I fast travel.

What is the advantage of disabling autosaves?

There are some rare situations where the engine can't save correctly with quick- and autosaves. My 'sleeping' mod for FO3 suffered a lot from this problem so I had to advice the user of this mod to disable autosave on sleep. The vanilla game (FO3) avoid such situations mostly but it still can happen to produce a corrupt quicksave. If you want to be 100% safe disable the autosaves and don't use quicksave.
I can't say anything about New Vegas but it is the same engine.
