Fallout New Vegas, canon endings, and the future of Fallout

Post » Wed May 02, 2012 11:02 pm

Legion as canon would make things more interesting, and pave the way for a very large war to happen in the west.

House as canon would pave the way for the Enclave to make an appearance in a later Fallout game. :fallout:

NCR as canon would basically end up the same way as Fallout 2 did going into New Vegas. Moving east and draining the land dry of all of its' resources.

With Yes Man, I would probably see Anarchy in a later game in the Vegas area.

How? House doesn't have any ties to the Enclave, and the Enclave in the west has been eradicated. House wants people to come to the Strip and make him money at the casinos; the Enclave wants to either kidnap people (or mutants as they call them) and experiment on them or exterminate them completely. Not good for business.

Lemme rephrase that.

He's closer to inheriting the Enclave than NCR or Legion.

what he means is that house won't kill or arrest them, like the Ncr or legion would do or attempt to do. house would let continue doing whatever they wanted provided it doesn't affect the strip

I'd rather Bethesda stay the hell away from New Vegas canon. Like, far away.

I'm not going to comment on Skyrim's story, because that's Bethesda's baby. The Elder Scrolls always has been, and always will be, a Bethesda in-house series. I'm not going to compare it to Fallout, because they cannot be compared. Their lore shares nothing - the overall feel of the two universes is completely opposite.

My big issue is that Bethesda will butcher Fallout canon like they did with F3 if they produce a New Vegas sequel. I love NCR, don't get me wrong, but I love them for who they are: corrupt, greedy imperialists who (individually) have good intentions but (as a unit) make decisions and do things that are less than noble. If Bethesda ruins that image, then I'm sorry but I will never play another Bethesda-made Fallout game. I could stand Fallout 3, because it was Bethesda's first entry and they honestly tried to do something good, but after seeing Obsidian produce New Vegas I want the Fallout series to remain in their hands. Bethesda, I love your games - I really do. But you're not cut out to do the Fallout series justice.

The question was imperfectly phrased, I think. I don't really want to know of a canon ending, but I'd be interested in knowing which path Sawyer personally thinks is the best (or least bad). So the question should have been, "Which of the main endings in New Vegas do you personally incline towards?"

I think Sawyer got that, but doesn't wanna voice his opinion knowing people will draw conclusions from it.

Your character's job will be to defeat the robot, and when you finally confront it you will have to use your speech skill to yell at a dust storm for five minutes. Once you have shouted the dust storm away, you can fight the robot, but you'll be so overpowered by this time the robot will only last about ten seconds in the fight.

Let's combine our speech skills!

Ah, okay. If so, I incline towards NCR. I think Sawyer probably inclines towards House, though, because NCR/independent endings are WAY too bright for a series that has the tagline "War... War never changes." Legion ending is way too brutal and leaves no story to be expanded upon in the sequel, so House would be the safest bet. There's no status like the status quo.

The game mechanics reeks of NCR's favor, but the setting to me sounds like it will be Vegasy. I mean, the game is called New Vegas, not Fallout:Hoover Dam or Fallout:The Fort. New Vegas is critical to the survival of the Mojave, and the Courier is most *likely* to submit to House. He is a Courier after all. After his delivery, House offers him a place as his agent. How would he just away and say no, I want to join up and get good with NCR/Legion? I can't see that. Even if the Courier didn't want to deal with House, he would go with Yes Man and go independant. There is no way he'd yet again, put NCR or Legion in power when there is an entire army of Securitrons at his disposal! The Casinos, the money! I feel, in my opinion, that the game was laid out so that you are "naturally" inclined to side with Vegas. At the end, what do you get for helping NCR or Legion? A coin in your honor? A Golden Branch? Paah! Why not have House, who will ahve you as a permanent Leftenant, a man who has access to bajillions of dollars and caps? Or even Yes Man? If you wanted, you could even retire at the Ultra Luxe and make a life at the Steam room and relax in the hot pool!

Just my opinion, if there ever was to be a "canon" ending.

Watch, if Beth makes a game close enough to New Vegas, I'll bet you 20 caps they'll make NCR canon because 'They're the good guys! They bring democracy!'
I will see your bet and raise you 5 Aureus' :)

The way we'll ever see a canon ending is if word about the Mojave goingons reachs the location of Fallout 4 and at that it will only be part of what we done and close to no mention of the Courier.

I just don't see how the Courier's actions wouldn't permanently affect or scar America. I mean, he determines teh fate of Nevada,California and Arizona. That's a nice chunk of land gone forever in the name of preserving character choice.

To be honest, I think if they have to pick an ending, they'll go independent vegas and leave it ambiguous whether or not it's house or yes man. Why you ask?

1. Both NCR and Legion intend to invade California/Arizona after their victories. Any game set in the core region would either have to take place during this war, or assume a victory by either faction that would essentially leave them as the only standing government in the former United States, meaning nothing would stand in their way of reclaiming the whole country, which would pigeonhole the series. Vegas separating the two allows for more stories because it allows both factions to survive. Without Vegas it's one or the other. With Vegas, you have three powerful and influential factions instead of just one.

2. As for leaving it ambiguous regarding House, that's simply because that's where they actually can leave it up to player choice between independent and house. With yes man's new "code to make [him] well..... a little more assertive" there's no practical difference in how vegas would be run between the two, so they wont say.

Also, (and I hate to say this) with the new fallout online game coming out, the creators of that game are going to want as many factions in as many places as possible. From the screen shots it looks like there's mutants in Seattle. Plus we can assume Brotherhood all over the West Coast, Legion in Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, Mormons and Allied Tribes in Utah, NCR in California, Oregon, Baja, Vegas in Nevada, Enclave in Chicago (maybe Brotherhood too, Vegas says Enclave in Chicago, Fallout 3 says Brotherhood in Chicago) and then the East Coast Brotherhood, plus possibly the Commonwealth (that's a stretch though) Things will be trending towards more factions not less.

That's a pretty good point. A Vegas victory could ensure the survival of the NCR AND the Legion.

If there were an FNV sequel, and it was Obsidian's baby, then this would probably be the direction. If it was Bethesda's baby, then NCR is pretty much the clear-cut decision. Legion? Bethesda wouldn't touch them with a 10-foot pole. Independent/House? Too grey for Bethesda to develop a proper story (if they did use Independent/House, expect things to be on the lighter shade of grey, and expect House to become SUPER nice, like... nice beyond politeness and gentleman attitude). NCR would have to be radically changed for Bethesda to develop a story with them, however. NCR's edgier shade of grey (the Brahmin rancher monopolies, Crimson Caravan issues, etc) would have to be struck out and replaced with a nicer, more bland NCR that's palatable to the common, everyday "casual" gamer.

Although, I might be wrong. Skyrim, for all its faults, had a pretty decent Civil War quest line which showcased how well Bethesda can handle doing gray and grey morality (Imperial Legion leans to the lighter shade of gray; Stormcloaks to the darker shade of grey), but the quest line itself had little impact on the world and the main story, so I'm not sure how well this bodes for Bethesda's future enterprises.

I agree the first few fallout games set the factions on this great path, but then in fallout 3 they kind of forgot about all that. What i loved about NV is that we are starting to see the world develop into countries and city states and technology increase, as opposed to just having a wasteland of ruins and villages for every game.

Well I dunno about Legion.
Lanius has to survive to become the new Caesar.
Otherwise Legion might fall apart due to infighting unless someone VERY influential which has yet to be shown steps up as the new Caesar.

But if Legion survives it means that Vegas and California is gonna be invaded again someday or that Legion is gonna be attacked by NCR. It's inevitable.

Caesar uses couriers as his Frumentarii, so whats the difference from being House's "agent" to Caesar's future top spy?
Even if the Courier didn't want to deal with House, he would go with Yes Man and go independant. There is no way he'd yet again, put NCR or Legion in power when there is an entire army of Securitrons at his disposal! But he's a courier, who was ambushed and shot in the head, twice, s/he doesn't strike me as a capable leader of 3 casino's full with money and reformed tribals. With him being a courier I think he is destined to keep wander as so and would likely join the Frumentarii.
The Casinos, the money! I feel, in my opinion, that the game was laid out so that you are "naturally" inclined to side with Vegas. At the end, what do you get for helping NCR or Legion? Thats true but how cemented are you in the history of Vegas with those ending? With your face on coins you are part of the Legion forever and everyone who comes across those coins will know your name and the deeds you have done in aid of the Legion. Even the branch has some significance. But House, YesMan what would the future know of you with these endings. House: That you gave him an imposing army of robots and are not locked away inside the Lucky38 forever, doesn't sound too good. YesMan: Every war torn building in Vegas after the Battle of the Dam was my foolish greeds doing, oops...

Well, I could also imagine a Legion victory being canon - if Bethesda is making the next game, and if it's going to be set in the NCR core region, I could imagine the premise being "THE LEGION IS INVADING CALIFORNIA! WE FIGHT FOR OUR FREEEDOOOOM", with NCR being unambiguously the good guys and the Legion being the demonic antagonist. Because let's face it, the Legion make great villains. Even in FNV they're already more than halfway there (apologies to Legion fans).

I really hope they turn it over to them (obsidian) and stick to just producing. Seeing how they did the story and quests in skyrim I have no confidence in them doing justice to the series. This way they can still make there money and the fans will be happy too.
