Fallout New Vegas Vs. Fallout 3

Post » Thu Mar 31, 2011 10:52 am

I to think FO New Vegas has better exploration, just from what I have been reading, FO3s exploration is more sand box and New Vegas is not. So I'll agree that FO3 is a better sand box for what its worth.

Fallout 3.

There is a lot of improvements and additions that FONV has that FO3 did not.

Companion wheel - what's the point in this when the AI for companions is near to none-existant. Kamikaze behaviour & glitches and bugs abound with 'companions'.

Companion perks - making a easy game, even easier.

Gambling - money is still too easy to come by, so this is rendered obsolete

Binoculars - no zoom, disappointing

Snow - what? , the snowy peaks you can see in the distance, hardly amounts to a new environmental effect does it?

More Freindly Super-Mutants - this is a boon, except when you pacify Tabatha the whole Black Moutain populace of SM's become mute / can't interact with!

More than twice the guns - pity they shipped the game with that awful bug that effects all shotguns though huh?

New drugs - too many chems removes all sense of danger from the wasteland.

Crafting - the schematics from FO3 are gone! And the availablity of guns/equipment/chems makes the Survival skill utterly pointless.

Ability to Play-Through as a pacifist - yeah, good luck with that! This is still a game about shooting things.

Ability to kill every person in-game except for one - how is that a commendable feature?

Ammo Type Switching - if you've got 1 round of normal ammo, but tonnes of AP ammo, the weapon will default to the normal when first equipped - so annoying!

Electricity - huh???

hokers/Strippers - poorly animated, and not in the least bit 'enticing'. Really, their inclusion makes me squirm.

Stregnth/skill requirments for weapons - you can still equip them though, which is a cop-out for the console masses. No heavy weapon skill - wtf!

Vegetation - is embarrisingly implemented, stalks sticking out of low-res textures.

I agree with all your other points, but I wish people would stop making NV out to be something that it's not. Clearly, Obsidian have take the franchise one step forwards and two steps back with its sloppy approach to QA.

Better RPG: New Vegas
Better Fallout game: New Vegas
Better sandbox game: Fallout 3

I guess it all depends on your preference. I personally prefer story, writing, dialogue, character interaction, faction interaction, choices, RPG elements, and a lot more that New Vegas offers that Fallout 3 cannot over exploration.

I totally agree. Inconsistencies with canon aside (Yes I'm also a fan of FO1, FO3 and even FOTactics) FO3 did a good job of "rebooting" the FO franchise. It's a great game for what it is, a sandbox RPG with first person shooting elements and FO3 was able to carry over a lot of what made the TES games so great, such as the "open world", non-linear, "single player MMO-like" experience where you can pretty much do whatever you want, follow the main or side quests, gather unique gear, or simply wander the game world killing stuff...

I'm finding that I'm playing FONV much differently than I've played FO3. For me at least, FO3 was much more about grinding my character to have perfect stats, yes RPing was important, if I played the "good guy" Megaton and Tenpenny was spared but it was almost secondary to the perfect level 30 grind for me.

In FONV, the grind is also important, but since the "perfect" stat character is impossible in FONV, I pretty much just stuck to specializing in certain areas. It was tough finding the right fit, I must of restarted the game with totally new characters at least 4 times before I got happy with my current build, but once I was there, it's pretty much all about the questing. It's almost as if a switch got flipped and I care about how every little quest is going to end.

Yes. To put it simply.

It's an old argument here. It's almost as if "story" counterbalances "sandbox" in a zero sum game. The more of one, the less of the other. So, it comes down to which the player enjoys the most. FO:NV, to it's credit, manages to pack a decent amount of sxploration into a story rich game, but the places to explore seldom tell visual stories as well as FO3. That said, there is enough content that I can hit level cap before I get around to reaching the strip. It's not as big a difference as, say, DA:O and any Beth game.

Companion wheel - Companions seem to work fine for me.

Companion perks - Same could be said for Fallout 3. At least perks give you a reason to take one with you. They aren't unbalanced perks either. Most are just helpful in some creative way like Boone's spotter perk or Veronica's crafting perk.

Gambling - I like the gambling but it's the gambling that makes money easy to come by in the game. Then again, playing with normal or sub-normal Luck fixes that.

Binoculars - It may not be an eagle eye zoom but it gets the job done.

Snow - Go to Jacobstown.

More Freindly Super-Mutants - Go to Jacobstown.

More than twice the guns - There are tons of new weapons in New Vegas and not all shotguns are affected by the reloading bug. Not everyone is affected by the reloading bug either.

New drugs - It doesn't matter to me because I very rarely use them.

Crafting - Some of the crafting schematics were way too powerful (Nuka Grenade and Dart Gun). Besides, it wouldn't make sense to have two different societies develop the same type of weapon (like the Railway Rifle) when they have no contact with each other. By the way, Survival is incredibly useful on hardcoe mode.

Ability to Play- Nobody said being a pacifist would be easy. Just because you don't want to kill people, it doesn't mean that people don't want to kill you. Companions also make being a pacifist possible.

Ability to kill every person in-game except for one - Commendable that you can actually affect the game by removing anyone you choose (barring one person of course). If you want to be a bloodthirsty psychopath, the option is there.

Ammo Type Switching - So because it's annoying that it switches (which it doesn't do to me), it's not an improvement?

Electricity - The Mojave Wasteland has power. That's what he meant. There's actually a reason for the computers, lights, etc to be on in the Mojave Wasteland opposed to the Capital Wasteland where things were powered by what appeared to be magic.

hokers/Strippers - What Vegas wouldn't have hokers and strippers?

Stregnth/skill requirments for weapons - Big guns were rolled into their respective skills (Minigun to Guns, Gattling Laser to Energy Weapons, Missile Launcher to Explosives, etc). It makes more sense that way. Besides, sure a player can use a weapon he/she isn't skilled in or stong enough to use, but doing so makes the weapon much less useful as a consequence.

Vegetation - It's fitting for a desert. There is little useful vegetation in a desert.

Sounds to me that you're just looking for stuff to not like about the game.

From what measurement point are the 2 steps backwards taken from when regarding the whole franchise, though? From Fallout 3 - which had almost all of the same issues that NV has, but which NV has fixed a good number of?

Actually I think Obsidian took the franchise two steps forward to the "actual Fallout and not a gimmick" zone.

Indeed. I think they should have taken it even further instead of the "half steps" they did. I wanted "true" DT and DR. Even more influential SPECIAL stats and so forth. For them to kick off the last dregs of the "Oblivion" system as it were.

FONV > FO3

I don't think so :(, but they are raising the level cap to 35.

They are? Bummer. That's okay, I'll just throw the extra skill points into something I'm not using like lockpick or something.

wonder how long until we stop seeing these threads?

anywho, I love both games and can not decide which one is better both are excellent for different reasons, although if I was tied to a chair and tortured i'd porbably say FO3 because I like me a bit of sandbox

but people who go F:NV has included ground breaking features really should check out the FO3 nexus, somethings might seem very familiar ;)

Can't really agree more. At very least they should've put these higher degree RPG mechanics as part of the hardcoe mode (this was actually what I thought was being done when I heard about the soft requirements for weapons).

Granted, I love TES to death (even though Oblivion was a major step in the dumbed down direction), but keep the TES mechanics out of my Fallout!

Yeah, but I guess they have to work with the existing frame work, and couldn't completely scrap the existing FO3 mechanics.

I bought Fallout for the freedom and exploring. Not much for the weapons. This is something that Obsidian missed.

I dont see how New Vegas has any less freedom than FO3. In case people didn't notice, there are four separate main quest paths past a certain point compared to FO3's one. (I don't count putting FEV in the water as a separate main quest path.)

By less freedom they mean they can't go kill things for days and aquire loot in massive quantities. At least that's what I gathered.

I played some FO3 after 120 hours in NV.
Fallout 3 is so bad now.
Whenever I ran into enemies I wanted to look down the iron sight but it didn't work.
And everything in FO3 is greenish and kind of ugly.

But

The impact FO3 had on me when I first played it was WAY bigger than NV.

I think Fallout 3 is better for replayability. New Vegas was fun the first playthrough, but after that it got very boring very quickly.
