Fallout New Vegas Vs. Fallout 3

Can we at least now confirm that 'hardcode mode' was nothing more that meaningless PR hype? Used to entice jaded FO3 owners to purchase yet another gamebyro-engine title. I'd rank it alongside 'radiant AI' as the most misleading pile of tripe that's ever been uttered by a devco's marketing department.

Admittedly, it added a tiny bit to the immersion - but why did the devs chicken out by making the wasteland virtually overflowing with water / edible items? Why bother to include a 'hardcode mode' if it impacts so little on the game? If they took the time to balance the world accordingly, it could've worked - but that would've required planning and forethought, traits which Obsidian don't possess

I regularly despair at the people around here that list 'hardcoe mode' as a plus feature. ITS COMPLETELY REDUNDANT

Go to Vault 34 or Camp Guardian. Both had me in suspense for different reasons.

Not even close...

Camp Guardian was cool and has a really nice story with it and Vault 34 I just ran through fast as possible killing everything that moved because I wanted to avoid being radiated as much as possible.

Anyway... I just like Bethesdas games. I like the open worlds. I like to explore and I definitely like the random things that take place in the Capital wasteland. If I want a game that is story driven I'll play Dragonage :P

Not even close...

The original damn fallout series focused on story, since that is what is more important than Sandboxes. Exploring has, until recently, played a very small part in games. The games were linear, but they were great, and we liked that.

Every game should be story driven. Sure, you could explore every campsite, but there is no story behind it.

I liked New Vegas better. But it was really only better because Obsidian had a chance to fix Bethesda's mistakes.

lol.. no need to get hostile. I'm just expressing my opinion. In no way do I think FONV is a bad game, it's great. Now if they could just combine what they already have with a sandbox world, interesting explorable areas ie; bigger buildings, caves etc, and random encounters...

Random encounters, yes.

Bigger buildings? I don't see why they aren't big enough.

Caves? They never served a purpose in FO3 anyways.

When I found out what the hardcoe mode was about, I immediately thought of all of the people here who were complaining about Fallout 3 and lack of weight for ammo and medicines.



As for the question, I like both games equally. Although, the only bug in my Fallout 3 game was the missing robots in the Big Town junkyard. The GotY fixed that, though. Although, the Broken Steel quest gets really choppy at the end of it, and I think it killed my original PS3.

Because in FO3 I could spend hours in them exploring, and that's what we like.

It's a matter of an opinion. Someone prefers endless tourism and someone else stories and writing. Really. :shrug:

I hope that in FO4 we will get a heatlhy balance between them. Obsidian should team up(I mean REALLY team up, not just letting Beth looking over their shoulders) with Bethesda Game Studios and create the ultimate story driver Sandbox Fallout game. :bowdown:

Yeah, I have to agree with this. Don't you think that at times NV displays a chronic lack of ambition in this department? Stumbled across the Cazador Nest recently, and I thought "great, an underground labyrinth where I come face to face with the Mother Cazador and exterminate her brood!. Maybe rescue some poor wastelanders who have been cocooned or something! " But there was nothing. Not even an entrance - just a black wall!

Same with the New Vegas Steel works. Upon entering I thought I'd be dodging robots amid vats of boiling ore (think Fallout does Episode 2 Geonosis droid foundry!). But no, just one solitary room! What an opportunity squandered!

But then NV was always meant as a simple cash-in, not a true successor to Fallout 3. (not even a FO 3.5 as some people would have it)

NV was more of a Fallout 3 than Fallout 3, though... It was more of a successor than 1/2 and had more of the Van Buren plot than 3.

It's actually supposed to be more of a sucessor to Fallout 1 & 2. just sayin'

IMO, F3 didn't really set any standards for me.

That's exactly what I thought when I first finished NV, I don't think i'd play another game for a mighty long time

Yeah. Because they never seem to frame it as an opinion. They always say "well Fallout 3's plot is better" and stuff that's demonstrably not true, when what they really mean is "I liked Fallout 3's exploration aspects better than NV's," which is a valid stance to take. :P

Anyway, Beth and Obsidian teaming up to make Fallout 4 would be grand, but I'm pretty sure Beth has way too big an opinion of themselves to do that with anyone.

Bethesda usually goes overboard on the number of dungeons.... so if they tone that down and add more depth to the storyline for FO4 I will be a very happy vaultboy! :)

EDIT: I forgot that they should make SPECIAL stats effect skills more and eliminate skill boosting magazines/gear. I find myself making generalist characters in NV still because it is not hard with magazines and drugs to have high enough skill to do most things while I level. Weapon mods would be great if they were included as repair skill schematics too.
