Fallout: New Vegas, Game of The Year?

Post » Sat Jun 05, 2010 11:38 am

Nothing about Fallout 3 was fresh. RPG/FPS hybrids have been done before (and better than Fallout 3, see Deus Ex or Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines.) New Vegas was a massive improvement on the formula, though, because every single thing is superior. The combat mechanics, the dialog, the quest structure, the skill system, etc.

The only reason Fallout 3 won GOTY awards is because the mainstream public and press bought into the massive hype machine, as they often tend to do.

I never said that. It's an assumption on your part. I don't think NV will win any GOTY awards, even though it deserves them.

So we're on the same page than? It seemed like you were implying New Vegas would win.

Of course SC2 won't win GOTY.

1. PC exclusive (smaller fanbase)

2.RTS (many people don't like RTS making for even smaller fanbase)

I just can't see it happening.

Demon's Souls won GOTY from Gamespot last year, which was PS3 exclusive and had a much smaller fanbase than SC2.

Right, I think you just misunderstood my points. However, I'm not sure if anything you listed are likely contenders, though. I'd put more money on Mass Effect 2 winning, even though I don't personally feel it deserves such high praise, even though it's a well-made game.

There are two questions:

Does FONV deserve GOTY? All I can say is that it is one of my 3 personal favourites released this year along with Mass Effect 2 and Stalker: Call of Pripyat.

Will FONV win GOTY? With games like Starcraft 2, Civilization V, and Call of Duty: Black Ops released this year it doesn't stand a chance.

Yeah, I was mostly throwing up my favorite games that came out this year.
Anyways, video game journalism is pointless.

Indeed. The only opinions I've come to fully trust are my own.

I'm enjoying the game but I don't think it will be GOTY, it's just not original enough, as I said, I am enjoying it, but as an example I play Dragon age origins, the game had me so engrossed I never looked up from the screen while playing, NV on the other hand can only keep my attention for about 30 minutes before I'm here checking out the forums, I would like to have said it's a master piece but I'm finding a lot of the quests convoluted and boring and I cannot bring myself to like any of the factions.

Anyway, thats just my opinion, I do hope the devs get some kind of reward for their efforts.

There are multiple magazines and websites, therefore multiple opportunities for achieving GOTY status. Furthermore, New Vegas would be relatively fresh in the minds of the deciders, so it probably will get at least one GOTY from that, considering how fun it is supposed to be.

Asking this on a forum for the game in question is going to get you bias results.

If they patch away most of the obvious bugs (and clean up some of the rough edges), I think it deserves GotY.
