Fallout: New Vegas, Game of The Year?

Post » Sat Jun 05, 2010 7:58 am

Looking at the reviews score it seems to me like it's No Dice for Fallout: New Vegas, but what do others think?

No other game I have played this year comes close to being as good as New Vegas. It's my GOTY so far.

New Vegas deserves GOTY status far more than Fallout 3 ever did. Sad thing is, it's probably not going to get it.

There really needs to be two options:

"Does Fallout: New Vegas deserve to be GOTY?"

and

"Will Fallout: New Vegas win GOTY?"

I agree with this as well, but unfortunatly people like you and me don't decide these things. ;)

It's kind of hard, in me eyes, to explain how "good" Fallout: New Vegas is. With Fallout 1 and 2 it was easy, you had 2 games, one better then the other, straight cut.

With New Vegas it's a little different, you have only have Fallout: 3 to compare it with, as it shares the same engine, but what's different is that it's a completely different "world" in a sense.
It's almost like Fallout 2 with Fallout 3s engine, the same brilliance, story, characters of Fallout: 2 yet it lacks the "Homemade" feel to it, anyone else have this opinion or am I just rambling like a nostalgic idiot?

I do miss the simplistic sprite graphics and overhead view of Fallout 1 and 2. And I know I'm in the minority, but I dearly miss completely turn-based combat.

However, I feel that New Vegas is the closest we'll get, in the conceivable future, to a "true" Fallout game. And I'm very grateful for what it is.

I think it's more deserving than FO3 as of now myself. The sad thing is, can anything beat Black Ops. I remember when you had to have more then a zillions copies sold to get GOTY. Hell, they'll have some feature the will get it into RPG categories for some stupid reason.

I like the game but I don't think it's going to win any GOTY awards. The RPG of the year award will probably go to Mass Effect 2 and in my opinion deservedly so.

With the amount of RPG elements that were stripped from ME2 compared to the first ME, I'm surprised it's still considered an RPG at all.

It is probably MY game of the, but I don't think it is THE game of the year.

I think Mass Effect 2 will be hard to beat in the RPG/ACTION genre.

i agree. yes Mass effect 2 was a great game. an amazing game. but it wasn't an rpg. more like a 3rd person shooter with some small rpg elements

Oh, definitely. Don't get me wrong. It's a quality game. It's just disingenuously advertised as something it's not.

I don't disagree with some of you that ME2 was not much of an RPG but the fact remains that it is classified as an RPG and it will probably win the award simply because it was a quality game.

ME2 is a great game. It is in no way, shape, or form near the quality or complexity of New Vegas though.

Ha Ha!
NO
You guys actually believe this will win GOTY?
Sure, fallout 3 deserved it, but this is using the same exact engine and feels just like FO3. There were a lot of better games to come out this yer, like Heavy Rain, Starcraft 2, and Vanquish.
I love the game but if it wins GOTY I'll eat my 10mm.

It will probably get lots of RPG of the Year awards, not sure if it will get any overall GOTY ones.

I'm saying that fallout 3 deserved it because it was fresh, if FNV came out in '08 instead of fallout 3, it would of definitely won a few GOTY awards.

Also, if you think this game has a better chance of winning than SC2, you're sadly mistaken.

Nothing about Fallout 3 was fresh. RPG/FPS hybrids have been done before (and better than Fallout 3, see Deus Ex or Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines.) New Vegas was a massive improvement on the formula, though, because every single thing is superior. The combat mechanics, the dialog, the quest structure, the skill system, etc.

The only reason Fallout 3 won GOTY awards is because the mainstream public and press bought into the massive hype machine, as they often tend to do.

Also, if you think this game has a better chance of winning than SC2, you're sadly mistaken.

I never said that. It's an assumption on your part. I don't think NV will win any GOTY awards, even though it deserves them.

Of course SC2 won't win GOTY.

1. PC exclusive (smaller fanbase)

2.RTS (many people don't like RTS making for even smaller fanbase)

I just can't see it happening.

I enjoy it a lot but the bugs and inability to play on after the end keeps this from being a candidate for game of the year. I think Mass Effect 2 should win hands down. I hope its early release doesn't hurt it but I don't think it will hurt its chance. One category FNV could win is voice atcing, great cast and the roles are played great. Its not gonna win no story award, graphics award, technical award, or other award like Fallout 3 did because its not as polished and it uses the same bad engine that just doesn't work great with newer consoles. I mean in 2008 a lot of gamers including me loved Fallout 3 for the side quests and feel of the game, certainly not the graphics, its now 2 years later and FNV has the same graphics and less appealing side quests. Not saying theres no good side quests but not nearly as many good ones from 3. That said, it shouldn't win game of the year but it should be played if you like rpg's or the Fallout franchise.
