Fallout 3 New Vegas GECK

Post » Fri Sep 17, 2010 4:36 pm

Maybe I'll find out later but I just don't see why there would be a need for a completely seperate GECK for New Vegas. Isn't it the same engine?

Can the New Vegas GECK be used with Fallout 3 files?

EDIT: so I read up in the readme.txt included with the new GECK,

The Garden of Eden Creation Kit (GECK) allows you to edit and create content
for Fallout: New Vegas.

Fallout: New Vegas is required to create and play content created with
The Garden of Eden Creation Kit.

The New Vegas Edition of GECK is not compatible with Fallout 3.

I guess it's a attempt to control content within the new game

It may be technically possible for an FoNV GECK to be made backward compatible with FO3 by whoever develops GECK but it would be more of a pain in the ass than is worth their effort. FO3Geck continues to work for FO3 so, there is no need to do such a thing.

I think they need to be different because they have tweaked how the esp and esm files are written, making them more efficient. Also it is the same game engine, but a new version. This would be like saying, shouldnt the CS for Oblivion work for Fallout 3? Well, not exactly.

I guess you're paranoid and/or worse.
The. file. format. is. different.
Armour now has Damage Reduction instead of (or, we've been told, as well as) Damage Resistance- how is the FO3 GECK supposed to understand armour forms containing extra fields? How would it know what they mean? Magic? Obsidian is a good company, but they can't make .esms that rewrite the editor as it reads them so it knows what extra fields they have.

The alternative would be to release a patch that made the GECK read the files, decide whether or not they were NV or FO3, then read the data in as appropriate and display different boxes as appropriate and basically just have two programs in one. Splitting them is far, far easier.

That's pretty significant!!!! Would be a beast of a geck to be able to handle both versions, and unnecessarily complicated when you can have the 2 gecks separate.

That's not the half of it. FOSE will probably require an entirely new DLL for NV. The loader can be tweaked to inject the FO3_1_7 DLL into the game and i works, but none of the functions do. Moreover, the actual byte code of the GECK is absolutely different. The hook is in an odd place and nearly impossible to find and even once loaded into the GECK, it appears to work on an entirely different set of functions.

I'm working on FOSE and it could probably be reverse engineered to work with this current form of the engine, but I don't have permission to rebuild and release a new version of FOSE so i'm limited to messing with the loader.

Anyways, point is, it's not so much that it needed a new GECK that the entire system has been reworked.

To be annoyed that there is a separate GECK is sort of stupid. This is basically a completely new game if you think about it. New story, new guns, new armor. If you have a GECK that had Fallout3 Main File, and Fallout New Vegas main file, what would happen if you loaded them both at once. Failure! Not to mention that even if there was a universal GECK you would either have to update the old GECK with all the new files for New Vegas, or download a new Universal GECK which would take longer than just downloading the new one. They have also most likely changed a bunch of features, and file types in the new GECK ( Just bought the game haven't seen the GECK yet.) Assuming they have that's why it's not universal.
