I'm on the mission "Come fly with me" and have finished killing the nightkins in the basemant. I am now instructed to return to the "Research Facility" area through the door up the stairs (near an intercom). However, when i attept to open this door I am told I need a key. Pressing the intercom has no effect.

I have already tried to resolve this through loading a previous save. I played the mission again - with the same outcome. Help?

I'm sure it will.

In the meantime, go back to the motel in Novac and find Manny Vargas' room. Inside is a computer terminal that's unlocked. Read the info and you can move on with the main story.
