"Fallout New Vegas Launcher has stopped working"

This is happening for steam version. The game launched once and was able to play, now I can't get back into the game.

Weird.

Check task manager and see if a hung process is preventing it from launching.

Or just try rebooting.

Tried rebooting already. Closed as much as I could in task manager and still a no go.

Well re-validating files though Steam seems to fix the problem. I wonder if I will have to do this every time to play.

Ive had allot of issues with logins on a few games that use steam to load recently. It seems sometimes they will work fine but other times i have to restart steam and load and close the launcher multiple times to get it to work. You may have to go into the task manager and close the program there as well. I had to do that with splinter cell, metro 2033 and assassins creed 2. I lost all my saves in Assasins creed due to steams saving rutine so i just quit playing it.

I miss the days when i could just click whatever.exe and the game would start on its own. Im sick of steam and its issues.

Re-validating seems to work once. After that, it won't re-validate the files. Maybe if you delete the launcher and force another validation, I don't know.

Windows 7 indicates to me that the crash is happening in GameOverlayRenderer.dll. This is a Steam DLL, it's the one that handles the in-game shift-tab overlay, as well as the toast popups you get for achievements.

Maybe those of us with this issue should put down our system sepcs, so we can start to see if there is a pattern:

Intel Q9550 (Stock)
GeForce GTX 260 216 Core
8GB DDR2 RAM
Windows 7 x64

All my drivers are up to date, as of this morning when I did a full update pass. I am up to date on Windows patches.

Apparently the Fallout 3 launcher does this as well (and in fact, mine does, but I never notice because I use Fallout Mod Manager to launch FO3), and it's a Windows 7 issue. People have reported fixing the issue with the FO3 launcher by going to where the executable is located (the launcher for this game is FalloutNVLauncher.exe), right clicking on it, hitting properties and under Compatibility, setting it to either Windows Vista SP2 or Windows XP SP3 compatibility.

Worth a shot any way. I am at work right now, so I can't try it, but if it works for any of you, report back.

I have tried putting all game exes into compatability mode for Windows XP and nothing. Exact same "FalloutNV has stopped working" crash at startup.

I'm having the same issue as well. I tired bypassing the launcher executable, but even the standard FalloutNV.exe will go straight to the launcher

This is the error Windows 7 64-bit is detecting:

Problem signature:

-I restarted the computer and Steam, launcher crashes with error.

-I defraged my game cache, launcher crashes with error.

-Somebody suggested the FFDSHOW program problems and tried it, launcher crashes with error.

-I tried running compatibility mode for the both the .exes and launcher crashes with error.

-I tried validating the files, but Steam fails to do so around 50~55%, and will follow up by constantly "download" the same file over and over. <-possible issue right there.

I mean don't get me wrong, I expected teething problems for this game when it came out, but I wasn't expecting that the launch window would prevent me from doing anything.

The solution I posted about about setting the Compatibility on the FalloutNVLauncher.exe worked for me, I'm having no issues now on Windows 7 x64.

Every other time I start the launcher I get a "stopped working" crash. Literally every other time. I can get into the game fine when it does work so it's not a huge issue yet.

Same problem here on Windows 7 64bit.
I'm reinstalling now, But will try the compatibility mode when it's done.

Yep. I also removed a Codec pack I had installed because it was showing up in the list of loaded DLLs, just in case that was an issue. No dice. Validation works for me (with no errors), and the .ini files look the right size and have no mangled text in them. I skip through the intro stuff, press "New" and "Yes", skip more intro graphics and get to a loading screen... then it dies. Every time.

I think the last time I had a game fail this quickly for me was when Daggerfall first released (1996). *sigh*

"Verify integrity of game cache" fixed this for me, it found one file it did not like the looks of and replaced it.

History:

I had started the game one time, played a bit, saved and exited and it hung. Left for a couple of hours and had a notice when I came back that it had stopped working :), yeah, that is what I told it to do it just did not want to go away at the time. Started it back up to the FalloutNV.exe stopped error, tried again to same result, rebooted, same result, looked here for answers. Game on.

Windows 7 Professional 64-bit, Athlon 64 X2 5200+, Nvidia 9800 GTX+.

Peeps, disable ALL antivirus and antispyware...fixed at least this part for me, without having to try compatibility options.

Good luck.
