Fallout New Vegas: Map Editor

Post » Thu Jan 14, 2010 4:23 pm

Hello everyone, I've been thinking it would be a good idea to start a map editor, and by that I mean like a blank sand map, where basically, you can create your own wasteland. You could add shops, items, a whole bunch of stuff. Heck you could even put in NPC s from the main game. Yeah it would take a lot of work, but Far Cry 2 had a pretty decent map editor, I'd like to see what Bethesda and Obsidian could do with it. Leave a reply with feedback, and suggestions!

How would this be any different from the GECK from Fallout 3 and the TES Construction Set?

*Insert sound of head banging against the table*

I put "Not quite sure" mainly because New Vegas will MOST LIKELY have a GECK program released for it.

The GECK (since you don't seem to know about it) is basically the tool/program Bethesda (and Obsidian) used to make FO3 and FO:NV, with some minor changes. Unfortuantly, consoles can't get their hands on it because A: Console hardware is geared for playing games, not making games, and B: because Microsoft/Sony really, really, REALLY, dislike 3rd-party additions to their consoles, to the point where they'll say it violates the Warrenty (and it's possibly illegal to modify the console to accept mods... you may need to check up on that.)

Either way, unless Obsidion pulls what every PC gamer will call a "Stupid Move," you'll have something that's hundreds, if not thousands, of times better than a simple Map Editor.

His wish is still valid because apparently hes a PC user and he wants a GECK, so I don't see any "forgetting" here.

I am a PC user. Do I want a map editor? No. I Want a GECK. Completely within the foundations of the thread topic.

Ignoring the fact that GTA San Andreas DID NOT have a map editor released with it and instead the community had to make one based of the one they made for GTA III and Vice City (Something which puts other elements on your list in a dubious light) There is a huge difference between a simple map editor and the development tool that is the GECK.

The GECK cannot run on the consoles simply because they do not have the power to do so. It requires 2GB of RAM to run the GECK and neither the 360 or PS3 even come close in that regard. They lack the processing power as well.

But more importantly, Microsoft and Sony won't allow custom content that can alter the main game in such a way. (The Geck doesn't make stand alone maps like a map editor, but intergrates them into the main game itself, which can often raise compatability issues between mods)

This subject has been up here too many times for my liking.

But anyway, I've been using map editors for about 10 years, so I'm familiar with them and I sure know that console players want their own editor even if it is only map editor. But sadly
that will never happen.

If you want play it with mods you play on PC, and get all those "tricky" issues what PC gaming and mods will cause.
If you want just play the game without too much pain, you play on console.

New Vegas will be quite large game and it already has big map.
Time which would be spend to make map editor for consoles would be better to be used to polish the game mechanics.

GTA san andreas Doesn't have one

Thats what I said earlier. :) It does have a community made map editor though, one thats been beta for a long while. And was used mostly to cut bridges in stupid places and build hundreds of maps all with the name 'Stunt Island'

The thing is though, all the games he quoted (Except GTA) have MULTIPLAYER, something New Vegas does not have (thankfully)

His list is completely irrelevant to the subject really.

I love being a PC gamer. :D

I am guessing you mean for consoles since we can't get the GECK.Then yes I would love to see something like that.I doubt it happens though.

Assuming you want a map editor for consoles because us PC players will likely have something like the G.E.C.K, I don't really see a point to be honest. Unless Bethesda implemented a system where you could share maps with other people. Being a single player game, only making maps (which is different from a mod) for yourself would get rather boring after a while.

I really don't see the point (on consoles), because if Obsidian did this, people would want to be able to create quests to put in their map, and they'd want to add voice acting to the NPC's in those quests, both of which would just require the GECK.

It'd be cool for a little while i guess, seeing what kind of maps people made and stuff, but it'd get boring pretty quickly when all you did was run around in a bunch of different wastelands killing the same stuff over and over again.

A better solution would be for everyone to just become PC gamers. :D

They would have to actually create a whole new editor for this idea to come to fruition, as opposed to a typical construction set which is basically what the developers used minus some features (at least to my understanding). First of all, it's a downgrade, second of all, they'd have to make something completely new and specifically designed to work on consoles. It wont affect their sales at all (as opposed to excluding the PC construction set), so why would they put extra effort into it?

An editor for console won't be happening, there are a variety of reasons for this ranging from hardware and software limitations to security issues and restrictions imposed by Microsoft and Sony. Yes I'm familiar with games like Little Big Planet and UT2K3 but they have a specifically made in-game editor and from my understanding they're for stand alone maps. The Fallout 3 editor, even if it could run on a console (it can't) makes mods that are integrated in to the entire game which is a far more complex and difficult process to manage.

alot of games have a map creator somewhere in them. its getting more and more popular. here are some:

Game editors and map makers have fairly been common for over two decades :)

Since this won't be happening, and there are so many hurdles in the way, I'm going to lock this. The other thread on the same topic already had some people bring up hacking and related illegal issues and I don't see this improving.
