Fallout: New Vegas not detecting correct graphics card

Post » Tue Aug 18, 2009 7:12 am

When I go to options under "Graphics Adapter" it says NVIDIA GeForce 7900 GS, yet my graphics card is NVIDIA GeForce 9400 GT, and I believe this could be the cause of my blue screening on the loading screen.
Any ideas?
And I JUST installed the latest driver about five minutes ago.

The Geforce 9400 GT is the same card as the Geforce 8500 GT, and therefore actually a bit BELOW the minimum Fallout 3 Geforce (you should ignore the foolish business from Obsidian regarding Fallout NV minimum video graphics. It's wrong).

http://www.gpureview.com/show_cards.php?card1=443&card2=578

The 7900 GS was a somewhat better card than the minimum for Fallout 3, unlike yours. It is the "hundreds" number that makes a difference on the old Geforces from 6n00 to 9n00, and the "tens" digit for the cards from the GTX200s onward, for which the "30" is equal to a "500", and a "40" is equal to a "570". If you want to carry it farther, the "50" and "650" are about the same, and the "60" is about like a "670".

All that truthfully is beside the point, which is that the latest Geforce drivers are generally not right for old design video graphics cards, and you should always set a RESTORE point before gambling on a new Geforce driver, so you can undo it when once again, it's a bad idea after all. I am guessing now that you already had too new of a driver before now.

Besides the driver, your Direct3D could also be defective (Dx9).

Perhaps I should've also mentioned, it was still blue screening BEFORE I installed the driver update.
But either way I do believe it should be telling me that my graphics card is NVIDIA Geforce 9400 GT

This happens if you add the file d3d9.dll to your Fallout New Vegas folder.

Same problem , Nvidia 6600 - game runs super smooth UNTIL I get into combat or VATS and my PC freezes with a lagging sound and restarts itself .
Also one time i managed to see the bluescreen - IRQL_NOT_EQUAL_OR_LESS

AMD 64 X2 Dual 5000+
1024 RAM
Nvidia 6600

Win XP Pro SP3

Latest drivers
d3d9.dll added
