Post » Wed Aug 10, 2011 5:20 pm

Hey everyone, with skyrim still 3 months away I figured I needed to find a game to keep me busy. I haven't play any of the fallout series and if I can only get one should I get fallout 3 or fallout new Vegas? Do I need to play fallout 3 to understand New Vegas. I heard fallout is just like Oblivion with guns but, that doesn't seem like it would work lol? Anyway Which one would you recommend thanks!

Get New Vegas. You don't need to play Fallout 3 to understand it.

Better yet buy Fallout, Fallout 2 and Tactics together in a pack and play them. They are for PC and are really cheap now and then play New Vegas :fallout:

Fallout is not like Oblivion with guns, Fallout 3 earned that name by being extremely different than the series proper, whether this is good or bad depends on your viewpoint.

Well I really like medieval RPG's with swords, magic, etc. that's why I wasn't sure if I would like Fallout.

Fallout: New Vegas in my opinion has a better story. If I had to choose I'd rather get F:NV rather than F3. F3 is very bland.

Fallout 3 is a personal preferance, but New Vegas has improved on alot more things like RPG Elements, Dialogue and Weapon mods. Fallout 3 was somewhat awe-inspiring and I'd say it was a hands down creepier game (Especially the metro tunnels) New Vegas does improve alot of the aspects but somewhat lost the charm (for me anyways) of what Fallout 3 created. New Vegas is certainly more complex and if you enjoy that go with it, but Fallout 3 would offer the better experience (in my opinion, at least) especially the GOTY edition, as it offers the entire Fallout 3 experience in one place :D

Fallout isn't anything like that. It is an RPG, at least most are RPGs. Fallout Tactics is a tactical squad based game and Fallout 3 is a FPS with some RPG elements.

Mako Vlazkov is right. Fallout 3 got the name "Oblivion with guns" for being more like TES then Fallout.

There is no magicka in Fallout.

It′s not vital to play any of the previous games to understand the fallout history. New vegas have a independent storyline. F1 and F2 has a connected story, so you should play F1 before F2 because of the story. I started playing Fallout 3 and had never played any of the earlier games, It didn′t take long to understand the universe and the story, but it takes time to understand the depth of the universe.

Honestly it depends.
Both games play almost the same but with variations and themes that are different.

FO:3 More sense of humour, free roaming, exploring just to find little bits and notes of stories that have no quests.
Fun but really apart from the central quest everythings pretty short.
Then the main quest itself is really short and has lots of shortcuts.
Great game, fun, plenty of stuff to do as long as you like exploring for hidden things.

NV: Highly story based, complex play between factions and choices.
Still most places though with more characters and dialogue are pretty much one stop places until you hit Novac.
That's half the map tbh.
Lots of stuff to do quest wise, larger effect of your stats.
Weapons are more fun imo.
Exploring is a major challenge, for a first run you'll be stuck to one route far a lot of the game.
Awesome game, great story, greater choices ( except the very ending, but FO3 was the same but slightly worse.)

So exploring fun or quests and stories.... it's up to you what you favour.
Note: that's not to say either fails in the other. just that those are the games strong points.

New Vegas is a great game, but it's utter trash. Unstable engine, hell just a terrible engine period. It can't even fit 2 NPCs fighting each other without the Moon exploding. Many crashes, freezings, bugs to fill many textbooks. If you get New Vegas, DO NOT GET IT FOR CONSOLES!!!! If something bad happens, you need to access the console to correct it, which console players can't do! Sure, it doesn't happen often that you would need to use a command to save your skin, but it happens. Why take the chance?

That aside, now that you know, it is a fun game. I wouldn't trade it for $100! Asking 10 bucks for it at the pawn shop is a disgrace, makes me want to slap them! I say, $300 or nothing!

I think FNV is a good first-time Fallout game. You won't need to have played FO3 first but you'll be fine playing that one after. They're in different locations and both look different because the Mojave wasn't completely destroyed by the bombs but the DC area in FO3 was really devastated. I think FNV is a good choice. :)

Like he said, NV has lots of bugs on 360 and PS3, but on PC its just sheer awesomeness (for the most part :) )

If you like the exploring and dungeon crawling aspects of Oblivion I'd recommend FO3.
FNV has the better story but there's a lot less to discover.

Ya, if I do get FNV I'll definitely get it for my laptop. I saw it at the store for only $20 seems like a steal?

I think you should get Fallout 3, New Vegas is almost a sequel to Fallout 2. FO 3 has some things, but they're pretty easy to understand. It was my first Fallout and I thought it was awesome.

I personally think F3 has a better linear story line while NV has a more pick what side you want. F3 has more dungeon delving and more exploring while NV has a better weapon choice along with not very much exploring or dungeon delving. I like the companions better in NV because of background and their related quests which F3 lacks. So it's a personal choice I think you'd be better getting Fallout 3 then NV. Again preferences.

A say fo3 because you can then see all the improvements there are in nv. But Then again either one will keep you busy and they're both excellent

Agreed. I'd also recommend getting Fallout 3 first because it lacks some of the features of New Vegas, which you might find very odd if you play New Vegas the Fallout 3. Also, Fallout 3 should have more mods due to how old it is, so you can extend playablility that way.

Personally, I think Fallout 3's variety and number of different* places was better, although New Vegas had some interesting places and better features.

IMO the only thing similar between F3 and Oblivion is the same game engine. It's pretty obvious that they look the same. But saying that F3 being Oblivion with guns more reminds me of a firearms act being passed in Tamerel or whatever the TES world was. Saying that F3 is more TES than Fallout is pretty stupid IMO and the right way to put it would be Fallout 3 shares a few things with TES". What you said implies that Fallout 3 shares very little with the original games. Besides the occasionally crappy dialogue and MZ, I'd say F3 was pretty damn loyal to canon considering that 10 years had passed and a different developer made it.

Fallout 3 - Get it if you like exploring random dungeons and you don't mind a god awful storyline. If you aren't a fan of FPSers, this one would be better for you too since VATS does all the aiming.

Fallout New Vegas - Get it if you want a good storyline and writing, good balance of all skills being useful and you prefer actually aiming and shooting. Exploration is rather dry compared to FO 3 though.

Also worth mentioning that the New Vegas DLCs have been pretty damn impressive, whereas personally, I never really liked the FO3 ones.

Either way, give the series a try. I got into the series via Oblivion too. Was finally bored with Oblivion and decided to give "Oblivion with guns" a try.

Well I think you are over-exaggerating on the god awful storyline of Fallout 3, I would say it is enjoyable, but not spectacular. Fallout 3 exploration is top notch.

You didn't like the Pitt? That was pretty damn cool. Point Lookout was fun in a surviving against hard to kill lobotimites kind of way. And Mothership Zeta was like OWB but with better production values. Only FO3 dlc I didn't like was Operation Anchorage, except the Outcast part of course.

get both their both cheap and their both great games, they both have pros and cons, fallout three has more armor variety, bigger map with hours of exploration tons of side quests, more random encounters with enemies, and great dlc, New Vegas has more weapon variety, better story, you can play through it numerous times and get a different ending each time, it asl has great dlc as well

Fallout NV has better story and (imho) is the better game.
But FO3 is closer to 'Oblivion with guns', and is an okay intro to the world
