I'll go ahead and post my notice here as well because I, too, am having this issue which I have explained on another thread. This is quite annoying.

None of the normal fixes, or any suggested fixes so far have worked, its extremely annoying to not be able to start a game you just bought!

Find the ini file and make sure it is not read only.

My Documents\My Games\FalloutNV

Right click ini>Properties>(untick)read only

Same issue. Windows Vista - NVIDIA 9800 GTX.

App says it will detect video settings. Sets to High Quality. Nothing happens. Hitting PLAY again just does it all over again.

I don't have a falloutNV.ini file on my machine, is that Window 7 specific? CLosest I find is a new file with today's date called - Fallout_default.ini It is not set to read only...

I don't think it's 7 specific, I couldn't precisely find Fallout New Vegas ini file, the only similar things I could find were the settings Low-Medium-High-Very High which are all ini files, but I checked through to make sure that the files weren't on read only.

Can you believe they shut down their support at 5pm the day of a major launch like this. Has to be intentional, no one is that stupid.

Without any anecdotal support for this just yet, I will suggest that the game finds itself UNABLE to identify youir graphics solution for some reason. There are at least three inter-related softwares that affect graphics, perhaps four, if PhysX is part of the setup (and I do not believe that is true).

These start with the video graphics DRIVERS, and both AMD as well as nVIDIA has released drivers that were far from being perfect. Following that, Direct3d is necessary, and it makes no difference whether you use Vista or Win 7 (and thus Dx10 / Sx11), this game must have Dx9 as well, and recent Microsoft updates to Dx10 and Dx11 have disrupted Dx9, which goes in after whichever Direct3D is the default.

Last, of course, there is the game itself, which can be corrupted in a variety of ways.

Therefore, when the game misidentifies the cards (is totally unable to do so), then start by applying a video driver, and testing again. If not improved, get Dx9 and install that. Test again. If that doesn't do it, reinstall the game and test again.

Thing is the exact same error is happeneing to for Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas. All other games are working fine.

I don't think I can properly express my level of disappointment. I've reinstalled the game twice thus far, I've tried the supposed "Quick Fixes," I've updated all my drivers, I've restarted my computer and Steam client, I've given it a few hours to just sit and simmer, I've done everything that I could possibly imagine in hopes to fix a broken thing. My frustration is absolute and it really concerns me that the game, at least in my case, is apparently set to automatically detect my video hardware perpetually without actually letting me play the game but that's not to say it doesn't tease me by at least letting me click the "Play" button because it does. In case someone stops by and becomes curious, as before I'm running Windows 7 64 bit, GTX275, Intel i7, 6GB DDR3 ram so I couldn't fathom a scenario where it would be my hardware that prevents me from opening this game. Furthermore, despite the fact that this may not be a Steam issue as I understand that, I would like to convey my hatred for the product none-the-less. From now on, if I find out that a game for the PC required Steam, I'll either miss out on that game or get it for a console. Gar, I be angry. So if anyone has any solutions, please! I implore you to assist, I'll give you cookies. <--

I posted that message earlier today, I've tried installing Drivers, Reinstalling the game, changing settings, like it says... Everything I can fathom and I'm getting nothing. I even took the time to just download Directx 9 like you recommended and got nothing. So, those actions above didn't work in my case and changing the Steam Community In-Game check box didn't help either.

Same problem here, bought the game on pre order from GS, installed, now it won't load after clicking Play. I had the same issue with Gothic 4 this last weekend. Steam needs to fix their crap as this is friggin stupid. I'm running a new Alienware with Windows 7 64.

No fixes that I've heard of that are new. You can try unchecking the "Use Steam Community In Game" from the properties in the Steam menu but as you read this, don't get your hopes up. It didn't work for me and I'm still out searching, sadly.

Still no luck on a fix. Exausted google searches and apparently the issue I have with FO NV is same for FO3 so I wasnt able to find a fix there either. Hopefully someone from Bethesda can comment on this thread to at least acknowledge the issue is being checked on.
Thanks

Can't really say for sure, I thought I got lucky because it didn't give me the "Detecting Video Hardware" crap a few times but it kept resetting and asking me to verify, like when the internet tries to do a download. I read from one of the Bethesda posters that deleting ini files and launching again might help some issues so I tried it. I got really lucky with that and it required me to reinstall the game. Autobots, roll out!

Anyone tried turning Steam to offline mode then trying it again?

Upper left corner of a Steam window, select Steam>Go Offline.

Good luck.

Not really sure what the heck happeed but I reinstalled the game and the stupid "Detecting..." wouldn't come up but it kept asking me to verify and going right back to the launcher. After the reinstall I went in my Steamapps folder and selected the FalloutNV or FalloutNewVegas.exe and took it off run as administrator in properties, and I've been on and playing for a bit. I just logged out and in to make sure it's all running and seems that everything works fine. Just as a note, I have no idea what I did and I can't promise this works for you, but you might as well try. Good luck!

Just as a note, I have no idea what I did and I can't promise this works for you, but you might as well try. Good luck!

I installed it on my lab top Ti wouldnt load from my CD. it went to steam and DL the whole game via steam and installed. It started up and was playable. So I uninstalled it from my Desktop and its doing the same downloading from steam the whole game. Im hoping the solution is in the Downloaded version I seek. its almost done. If it works ill post either way Sucess or Failure.
