Fallout 1/2 noob, advice needed!

Post » Mon Apr 11, 2011 12:51 pm

Hello all,

Recently got Fallout 1 and 2 after getting hooked on the franchise by the latest games. Started F1, got reasonably far but decided to have a look at F2 after a while (I messed up my save game by pointlessly running around and losing a lot of ingame time, couldn't complete main questline), besides, from looking around at canon/lore I knew a lot more about 1 and its storyline than 2; I knew all the main story points of 1, unfortunately, and wanted to check out 2 as I hadnt got a clue what it was about except for the search for the g.e.c.k.

Anyway, gotten far enough in 2; been to quite a few locations and done a good few quests although Im still only around level 4 ( if someone were to insult my progress by telling me the game is incredibly bigger and that I haven't even scratched the surface, well....that'd just be great!!) and I was hoping that someone could give me some advice...

EDIT: this is my first post, I don't know how to post the spoiler tab, so bewarned!! spoilers ahead.

I've made contact with Vault city and Gecko, both giving me quests for each other, but I rambled between contacts and now I can't get back into Vault city; everytime I try to enter I get refused with no dialogue options (im hoping that if I have ruined my chances of entry then one will pop up when I get speech to a high enough level?) I got in the first time with a day pass (failed the citizen test miserably).

So I was wondering, is this a game breaker? I would love to go in a sort out the problems between both cities but can't unless I go in all guns blazing which, although tempting, is impossible for me. Is there any other way to get back in to Vault city?

Also, does the science skill have any use? apart from one dialouge option in F1, which didnt really get me anything, I haven't found any use for it: I was hoping that I would be able to access all sorts of terminals and get more of that incredibly written fallout info, but haven't seen anthing of the sort (yet).

Oh, and these games are just amazing. I expected something good, but not this good. Personal highlight so far has been in Fallout 2 *Spoiler* going between modoc and the ghost farm, all seemed to be going well, got good info from both sides, all I had to do was find karl to convice the modoc townspeople that everything was alright (within 30 days, or they were gonna attack) , went for a ramble to find him, got distracted for a while then got back to modoc a few days too late. The only words I got from my good 'ol pal Trader Joe were "We killed all of them...*sob* even the children".

Incredible.

any and all advice/comments are greatly appreciated, All the best!

Need a little more info on what you did in Vault City and Gecko. Did you get into an argument with the First Citizen? Did you talk to Senior Councilor McClure? What actions did you take in Gecko? Are you trying to enter at night with a Day Pass? Do you still have the Day Pass in your inventory?

As for the Science skill, yes there are several uses for it in the game. I'm not sure if you're asking for hints on where to find these situations or not. IIRC high science can be used to resolve several different situations and very high science is required to get a certain companion.

Edit: Also, when you say you rambled after getting the quests from both VC and Gecko, do you remember what towns you may have visited and what quests you may have completed before being barred from VC?

Hmm....I may have insulted the first citizen, yes.... it just seemed the way the dialogue was going, although I did have a feeling it would come back to bite me.

Did talk to senior councillor Mclure (in the room across and to the left from the first citizens office?)

Didn't do much in Gecko (didn't complete the vault city quest; wanted to resolve it peacefully between them, if possible) except talk to a few NPC's, completed the woody quest in the den (which was pretty damn funny I must say)

Trying to enter in the daytime but I don't have the pass in my inventory, have a feeling I was pickpocketed by those pesky kids in Klamath...

Happy days!! I'm glad to hear the science skill is useful, and no thanks I'm not looking for details/hints on situations, I'm just happy to know I'll find stuff in the future!

I rambled quite a fair bit to be honest; made it to New reno, broken hills, redditch. Didn't do many quests along the way (in the middle of the mine quest in redditch) but I did clear up a few loose ends in previous towns. Although I still haven't freed vic from the slavers, a 1000 bucks is hard to get...and I've got a feeling he's only going to point me in the direction of vault city anyway.

Cheers for the reply! much appreciated.

You seem to have annoyed Lynette. I don't think you can go back. She's kind of a [censored].

It's probably the insult that did it. If she kicked you out she probably revoked your day pass/citizenship. She's very intolerant of opposing viewpoints, and has no interest in a peaceful resolution. If you want a peaceful outcome you need to work with McClure (he's the one in the big room at the end of the hall to the far left from Lynette), and it's probably best to avoid Lynette after getting the quest from her. Unfortunately it might be too late for this playthrough, unless you have a save prior to insulting Lynette.

I like to add that you don't have to find Karl straight away, it can wait. You can solve the ghost farm - Modoc quest first then finish a part of the Gecko - Vault city quests because ...

Minor
Spoiler
In Gecko a ghoul will ask you to search for his missing friend, who is located in the same town as Karl. Also when you acquire the car part you can head back in search of these missing persons and fix your car in the process.

As opposed to most other video games, where NPCs get amnesia every time you click 'goodbye' and there are no consequences for saying whatever you want to anyone. I'll take a system where you actually have to think about what you say over one that holds your hand any day. In this case it just means he can't enter VC anymore. It's not game breaking, he just loses access to a few quests.

yep, looks like Vault city is off limits to me, ah well; just means I'm looking forward to my next playthrough already.....Although I am tempted to go back at a high level and go in guns blazing, just to see what info I can get from the vault.

Anyway, thanks again for all the replies and help; much appreciated!
