Post a dxdiag.
XP: Go to Start->run, type “dxdiag” and hit enter. Click the Save All Information button near the bottom right. This will save a Dxdiag.txt in C:\ by default. Then open the dxdiag.txt and copy/paste the information into your post.

VISTA/Windows 7: Go to Start->Search, type “dxdiag” and hit enter, click the Save All Information button near the bottom right. This will save a Dxdiag.txt in C:\ by default. Then open the dxdiag.txt and copy/paste the information into your post.

Then GECK shuts down
Would this be a problem that might be causing this?

Card name: Mobile Intel? 4 Series Express Chipset Family

This would be the problem, its is not powerful enough to play the game. The game needs shader model 2.0b and this chipset only provides 2.0. And since you are on a laptop, you are unable to upgrade.

Not normally. There is a .dll replacement file floating around out there to force the chipset to run the game, but you're taking risks of borking your operating system install and deteriorating the life of the chipset.

Age doesnt have much to do with it. It all depends on the hardware inside. And most laptop manufacturers place very weak hardware in "mainstream" laptops to get the price down.

You really should get into the habit of reading the system requirements of a game before you buy it. Unless the store that you bought it from is very, very nice, they won't give you your money back. It's pretty much standard policy not to give refunds on opened games, unless it's clearly defective. In which case they'll usually give you another copy, not a refund.

Well I already was planning on getting another computer... would a 1 GB NVIDIA GEFORCE GT 220 video card be enough to support most games with high requirements like Fallout 3?

It will support the games....but not on high quality. It is a fairly low end video card.
How much are you willing to spend on the PC? And what else is needed besides the tower itself, like OS install disk, monitor, keyboard/mouse?

The Geforce 9300 is worse then the 220 mentioned above.

Well I already was planning on getting another computer... would a 1 GB NVIDIA GEFORCE GT 220 video card be enough to support most games with high requirements like Fallout 3?

1. Fallout 3 has LOW requirements that a good machine from four years ago can easily meet, so what you want is much better than what this game requires.

2. The least capable Geforce you want is the GT 240, not a 220 or 230 (nor a 320 / 330 / 420 /425 / 430). Only a G.210, 8400, or a 9300 is worse than a 220.

3. Right now, nVIDIA isn't particularly competitive in the Mainline game class, with their GT 240 being their response to the two year old Radeon HD 4670, and not price-competitive yet, with that. They do not have any "440", only their 450 and 460, which are aimed at the Radeon 5750 and 5770, but AMD also is interested in that class (borderline with High End), having just refreshed the 5750 / 5770 pair with an update now named the 6850 / 6870.

4. The amount of attached VRAM above and beyond twice the memory bandwidth bit count is mostly for marketing. A GT 220 is a 128 bit graphics card that runs rather slowly. 256 MBs is the normal VRAM usage size that a card so slow can use, although under certain situations, it's able to handle 512 MBs. Large amounts of VRAM are needed for the highest of screen resolutions, but high memory bandwidth is also needed for that.

I'd say that the HD 5670 is the best Dx11 Bang for a Buck choice, if you thought Dx11 is something you want.

I'd also say that worrying about Dx11 is premature. By the time we will need it, today's purchases will be out of date, making those HD 4650 and 4670 cards still a viable bargain (Dx10).
