Fallout 4: One of the greatest games I've played

Post » Mon Jan 25, 2016 1:24 am

So been playing about 4 days altogether and it really becomes apparent this game is lacking in certain areas. Not that all the effort put into the released game was bad, its by far in no way a terrible game. I do however have some things that irk me knowing Bethesda and its care they put into their games.

For starters I can help but feel they missed so many opportunities to put more content quest wise into this game. by the 9th MILA, I was ready to stop working for the railroad. By the time I noticed my settlement was being attacked it was only the failed that caught my eye. These types of things feel like cop-outs in development because of time constraints and the need to fill up quest counts.

I wish diamond city had far more things to do quest related, I mean playing Oblivion felt like any NPC you spoke to had some sort of quest they were involved in and now we have filler NPC's? I mean guards, etc. we all get that but usually the world feels like its actually living when you can think back as you are walking through an area again and see someone you now have a tie to.

I wish Nat had her own quest line with Piper for the newspapers, yet nothing in all my time playing. I feel like we should have possibly defended the great green jewel of the commonwealth from some massive threat to its existence (much like the Robot ship.) I felt like settlements were simply there to fill up game time and distract you and frankly thrown in because it may have been the only functioning part of the GECK system they had ready for in-game (despite none of my settlements actually functioning properly.)

The game is great for exploration but with all these great areas you sometimes wish there was a real quest tied to it rather than simply kill because. With so many great areas it would have been awesome if you could use your minutemen to literally capture and hold sections of the map and designate them as somewhat "safe zones" or "friendly areas."

I know they had to have wanted to put so much more into the base game simply based on the amount of polish some quests really had (once again the robot ship is a great example.) With the sheer magnitude of greatness this game already has I feel like its nowhere near as good a vanilla game as skyrim and they already had the engine built for this one.

Just wish the quests were deeper, the characters had more depth. Like the whole silver shroud where you go through and end up making your own reboot story involving the death of the one who helped bring it all about in the first place. I actually giggled when I heard the hostage recording on the radio it was so perfect. I felt like the teams were torn between getting all the tech aspects working properly and between content introduced into the world. In the end we get a great sandbox but a somewhat dull narrative when it comes to all the story telling. I understand the streamlining chat and all but to me it was more limiting and vague sometimes than what I initially wanted when selecting a specific reply.

Love the weapons and mods and armor but the fact my companions are constantly changing their own gear/weapons after i forcibly equip them with one was frustrating. Hell, even removed Prestons default gear and he ended up duping another set out of nowhere a few times. The game just really feels like it needed maybe another 6-8 months in dev and should have been released later so they could polish it up more. It svcks knowing that time held this game back from its full potential and will end up seeking to make amends through DLC (like so many other games on the market these days.)

Bethesda I say this to you as a loving fan since I was an 11 year old boy. In your DLC can you not just focus on only the DLC projects and possibly work on the Vanilla aspects you felt were incomplete or lacking. I'm all for new areas, people, and NPC's, but sometimes I don't want completely new things, sometimes I want the vanilla things to be improved upon and pushed further down the road they already seemed to be headed and were simply cut short.

Love you Bethesda for bringing so much joy into my life and helping me truly immerse myself in different worlds. I end my jumping topic rant here.

There's a thought ---- instead of the DLC introducing a new map, new area, new quests and so on (Pitt, Lonesome Road, etc) use one of the DLCs to expand the ~already existing~ world with more detail. Add quests to NPCs that currently don't have them. Add NPCs (new guy in Diamond City, for example). Expand existing NPCs' quest ---- no, not more MILA locations, but some different kind of quest for the Railroad (ala Covenant) and a new quest for the Brotherhood and Institute, to be fair.

Some would likely deride it as not being worthy of a DLC ~because~ it has no new maps/lands.... but that just means that what they DO add (new characters, new dialog, new quests, new weapons/armor/clothes) needs to be top-notch.

looking how the new Beta patch solve some of the complains and add to the core game, my guess is, Bethesda will fix it.

But for the DLC no thanks, i just want they to focus on new stuff, outside the map, Adding to the map never work for a proper DLC.

Yea, but bad thread title. A game that led to that many complaints is clearly not one of the greatest ever.

Yup.

At first I thought this was going to a super "Rah! Rah!" post, but, even I, as a fan, have to agree with much of your assessment.

Kudo's for a great post!

Thanks much for taking the time to respond. I appreciate the input from people on the forums seeing as I registered to post this and get it off of my chest. I'll probably stick around for a while here to keep up to date with bethes.

I think you'll be pleasantly surprised at how informative and lively some of the debates get!

As someone who moderates other forums, I can honestly say that these folks are good!

I disagree, a game that can cause me to lose myself for a binge is definitely a great game despite its drawbacks. To say I'm not a bit disappointed would be a lie. I had hoped it was going to be filled to the brim with content and a fleshed out world but when I take a step back while playing, the game feels unfinished.

Once you play it longer you'll see how short and poorly written it is compared to every other game they made. Just endless radiant quests and redoing the main quest from fallout 3.

Hey, it got my attention!

And don't fool yourself: every game out there gets complaints, justified or not. There hasn't been a game made EVER that hasn't had loads of complaints and it gets even worse when it's a sequel.

You should have seen the Skyrim forums when it first came out, or the Dragon Age forums when Inquisition came out. You think we get bad here, you should have seen how vicious they got, especially on FAQ and Reddit.

At least on this forum we apologize when we get nasty (most of the time) and don't call each other "stupid-heads" just because we disagree with their opinion (most of the time). :)

Query: Are you still playing it? If not, have you returned it? If not, why are you holding on to it? Are you hoping that it will suddenly morph in to something completely different once some patches and DLCs drop? If so, good luck with that.

It's pretty obvious you loathe the game, after all.

Ill approach it as a fallout 3 reboot with my next character and see what you're talking about,. At the moment though I don't feel like its poorly written at all, just felt like it was lacking to me in some areas dialogue wise, was all.

Good observations. I also find myself playing the game and mostly having fun, but I keep spotting so many unfinished or unused aspects, which is really disappointing. So, seconding the request for a better and complete Vanilla game over any DLC.

Nevermind this is what happens when you have only 2 hours sleep!

ESO wasn't made by Bethesda though.

True. ESO was produced by Zenimax Online, one of the Zenimax subsidaries (Zeni owns Beth). You are correct!

I've only played the beta for ESO which I felt was decent despite my initial dislike towards the game, but I've heard people saying that the combat is better than Skyrim, which is something I did not really agree with in the beta at all.

Would you people say it's true?
