Fallout Online?

Post » Sun Sep 27, 2009 8:59 am

I was thinking of a new Fallout online game that everyone can play, there would be some that could be some of those bulked warriors or be security officers of the Vault, or medics, soldiers. engineers or anything else in the game...

Could Bethesda Game Studios work on an online game of Fallout?

I was thinking...

Interplay currently has the rights, and is working on a Fallout MMO as we speak. Whether or not it will actually come out or not, is another question entirely.

Yes, it's currently being developed at Interplay, by the original creators of Fallout. See:

it's their opinion
in the same way that some people prefer FPS games and others prefer flight sims.

personally, I'd prefer a co-op RPG that had a main quest and side quests and my companions were real people rather than scripted NPCs with limited interactions

I personally don't see a Fallout MMO to be a good thing from a lore standpoint mostly. It's supposed to be highly void of living beings other than occasional groups of raiders or irradiated creatures. Also how would the world look? Like in WoW there were certain zones based on a make-believe world, so even though in scale it wasn't very realistic..it didn't really hurt anything. But with Fallout we know that it takes place in the US..and it would just be weird to walk to the edge of the map and not be able to keep going.

What zones would a Fallout MMO consist of? Would they be areas separated by teleporters of some kind so people don't have to walk through endless wastes until the next town (kinda like how moving from town to town in Fallout 1 and 2 was pretty much just looking at an overland map until you got a random encounter or your destination)?

Let's PRETEND that it's as successful as WoW (nothing will kill WoW other than another Blizzard MMO, so don't start)..how would it make sense to have thousands of people appearing out of a vault? Or maybe there will be a couple human starting zones, a couple super mutant starting zones and a couple ghoul starting zones to spread the people out a bit?

We have no idea how the game will be. There could be a vast choice at character creation from Ghouls, to Wasters, Supermutants, BOS, Raiders, etc. Also the game can encompass the entire US which would make for a massive world and the Fallout universe has only ever explored a handful of areas within the US. It will be awesome when/if it ever is released and despite what FO fans say I'd be willing to bet they all give it a shot when/if it is released. :)

MMOs are terrible and Fallout doesn't deserve anything like that.

You can't have played L4D yet then!

I do agree with you though, the only thing holding my interest about the Fallout MMO is the simple fact that Chris Taylor and Jason Anderson are involved.

Partially agree, I don't like onliners in general but have no problem with them existing.

I HATE the way that some players INSIST that EVERY game HAS to be online to some extent!
Whats wrong with a few single player games c'mon people you get thousands of MMO's, co-op/deathmatch fps's, online RTS's can't us isolationists have 2 or 3 decent games?

My rant/0.02 caps

Chris Taylor, lead designer of Fallout 1 and lead systems designer of Fallout Online said:

I've seen some discussion here and there about how many players is anti-Fallout (or, more generically, anti-post-apocalyptic). I'd disagree, of course, otherwise I wouldn't be involved in V13. There are plenty of precedents for grouping and social organizations. Even the Road Warrior had allies during his cinematic adventures. In Fallout, NPCs were always available to join your group and there were plenty of social organizations that had a number of members.

My vision includes the lone wanderer, erm, wandering through the wastes and a team of individuals working together for a common goal (like getting a truckload of fuel past some raiders). In any MMO, there will be times and places that have more people than others (social centers vs. instances, for example). It won't be all of one at all times.

Wish I had a way to get my lengthy ideas for my own post-apocalyptic MMO to developers. I started on it a few years back and written out quite a bit. Mixture of the old EA game Wasteland meets Fallout meets WoW. There are things in it that most anyone would enjoy, unless you are just a die-hard "I hate MMOs" type person...

I think Fallout is a good vehicle for an MMO although the game engine would have to be altered somewhat however, sadly, VATS would be the first thing to go for such a game. You can't have the game pause in a MMO for one person just so they can "take their shot" with VATS. A FO MMO would have to be a 1st person shooter, very much like CounterStrike etc.
It would work quite well I think, and various mods could be developed for the game similar to what WoW has done.
Of course to achieve a huge audience for such a game, a massive investment would have to be made, somewhere in the realms of $100 million as I recall reading. A number of server farms would have to be built [vaults ;) ] and a number of [ahem] Overseers employed to administer the game online.
In the current economic climate where capital is difficult to raise now, I would think that such a project is quite unlikely to get going yet because the sales of FO3 have done very well, it would suggest that there is an audience out there who would sign up to play a FO MMO. I know I would!

Why assume that it must be first person? I very much hope it's not.

It will probably be 3rd person "over the shoulder" like most other mainstream MMOs.

I'd actually PAY monthly for a FO MMO if it's good. And I told myself I would never play an MMO.

I'd love to see a Fallout game in the mould of Planetside with mad max style vehicles and multiple small factions.
