Fallout patch size?

I am the "proud" new owner of a new copy of Fallout NV and I am having trouble which may not entirely be Bethesda's fault, but it's only here that I expect to find the right info.

Specifically, after I finished installing the game (from the disk) and registering it through steam last night, I turned off the laptop and went to sleep (was getting late). This morning, I logged into steam (which I don't typically do, I frankly dislike the service) and saw that the game wanted to patch before it would let me play.

Alright. Lots of news on crazy bugs, sounds like a good idea. I'll only have to wait a few minutes, right?

Try over three hours. And I'll still be waiting now for another hour and 45 minutes.

How large is this patch? Is it really that big? If it's small, is there a third party location I can retrieve it from?

I'm downloading at between 250kb/sec and 350 kb/sec. That's pretty damn fast for my connection. This patch would have to be in the multiple gigabytes range to take this long. Is something wrong with my patch? I see only a few hundred people are playing this morning according to steam...

Odd.

It's around 200meg, from what I understand. At 500kb/s+, I got it in around 5-10 minutes.
