Fallout 1: Putting armor on companions?

Post » Mon Jun 17, 2013 2:36 pm

I've tried equipping armor to an item slot, and then using it on a companion. I have also tried trading it to the companion, but that doesn't work either. So I was wonder if / how you can get a companion to wear armor.

Also, another question that doesn't really deserve it's own thread; where can I find the guard station in Junktown? I looked in the building right at the entrance, but Lars, the person I need to talk to so I can bring Gizmo to justice, wasn't there. The wiki solved that one. :)

Try using the barter system in dialogue or reverse pick pocketing them.

I've used the barter system already. I'll try reverse pickpocket.

It may be that Ian's default clothing is better than the armor I am giving him. I'll try a better piece to make sure I can / can't equip armor to my companions.

You have to RPP equipment onto followers in FO1. Followers will never catch you stealing from them, but you won't get any XPs either.

When Fallout was designed, they did not intend for there to be NPC party members. The idea for them came late; but their testers loved it.

In Fallout the NPCs are scripted, that's why the AI seems buggy ~they will [WILL] shoot through the PC to hit their target, and there is nothing the Devs could do about it.

There was never a way to trade with them ~anything you gave they then wanted to sell back to you ~so they are made not to care if you steal from them. There is no support for them wearing armor.

Fallout was made using 3D models ~but does not use 3D models in the game ~the models were rendered out into animated sprites. The game can only show characters and actions that it has the sprites for. Many NPC cannot use certain weapons because there aren't any rendered images showing them using those weapons ~or armor. It's not a matter of adding just the gun ~the entire animation set must exist for the equipment ~and they don't.

There were some user mods for Fallout 2 that allow NPCs to equip additional weapons and armor; one even fixed trading.
But I don't know of any for Fallout.

Fallout 1 is more difficult to mod than Fallout 2.
