As with any Bethesda game the oppurtunities for rp'ing are endless, figured i would start a thread on your ideas

What rules do you follow?
What character archetypes have created a lot of enjoyment for you?
And how do you play those characters?

Im working on an RP guide to Fallout New Vegas filled with helpful ideas and suggestions, as well as good examples, if youve got any post them here and ill credit you in the guide!

I'm working on an evil, charming sniper/assassin. Basically, taking the evil/money derived choices whenever they come about, using the .22 silenced pistol when lurking buildings, and my Ratslayer for when I'm in the wastes.
High sneak, speech, guns.

There are roleplayers out there, but they are really few compared to the powergamers with guides.

I'm just going to copy and past this from an RP thread I posted in today.

Kiva and Kain are coming over from the wasteland.

Kain, after getting into an argument with Wadsworth again, decided that he was bored. Same old same old. He was swimming in caps, and living the good life.
So he hosted the biggest part the wasteland had ever seen, and blew all his caps on it. Then, he used his only remaining caps to gather enough supplies to travel to the Mojave wastes.

Kiva on the other hand, got a lift with a regiment of Brotherhood of Steel soldiers, who were heading over to the Mojave wasteland to check on some...disturbing reports they'd been having about some people known as 'Caesar's Legion'.
A poor woman had ended up unconcious outside the citadel. She said that she was from the Mojave wasteland, and her whole family had been crucified by the Legion. She died shortly after, and no one knew how she made it all the way to the Citadel. With a heavy heart she left Dogmeat in the care of paladin Cross, and joined the soldiers. The wasteland didn't need her anymore.

I haven't got the game yet, however, so apologies on some canon discontinuity if there is any.

@ soulwithlife: pretty good, but there are a few minor cannon errors, first and foremost are the canon problems; the Brotherhood doesn't have much effect on the wasteland atm, and is resigned to a few underground bunkers. NCR is in charge, and Caeser's legion is based east of Nevada. Idk, I might have missread it, but you said you've haven't played yet, so no problem

My typical character is basically a Paladin crossed with a ranger. He tries to avoid fights when possible but won't violate his personal code of ethics.

I've tried to fix it a bit, will perhaps come up with a new way to implement the idea when I play the game, who knows
And what would his personal code of ethics be? Is he one of those ones that doesn't like to kill animals?

I'm not above power gaming once I've mastered a game's systems, but I'm not ashamed to say that I'm a roleplayer at heart.

Currently, I'm roleplaying as myself for my first playthrough. A cynical, Chaotic-Neutral mercenary playing multiple angles in the NCR/Legion conflict. A man with more faith in machines than his fellow man, I can often be spotted with my Eyebot, ED-E.

My relationship with the NCR is friendly - they're good men and women, doing their job, and I'm not about to make it harder for them. That being said, I've battled the Enclave - there is an inherent distrust of any organization that claims to be bring "democracy to the wastes". I'll help them only so far as it benefits me, personally.

My relationship with Ceasar's Legion is one of wary, mutual respect. I don't associate with the Legion, but neither do I stand in their way (unless they threaten me or mine). The Legion knows my face, and knows that I'm no Waster to be trifled with. We've worked together in the past, but on a limited basis. I don't take part in raids, and I don't agress against the NCR. I appreciate the Legion as the counter-balance to the NCR. My goal is to prevent either party from gaining the upper hand on the other, at any cost.

Ultimately, I'm a proponent of the "as-is" Wasteland. It isn't perfect, but it's the closest thing the world has ever had to an Individualist utopia.

...

Future playthrough ideas:

A hyper-intelligent former vault dweller, disillusioned with his way of life, journeys into the wastes and is taken in my the Legion, or,
A tough-as-nails female merc/bounty-hunter in her mid-forties. Specializes in guns and explosives. Resourceful, but mistrusts technology.

Roleplaying is why these games exist, as far as I'm concerned. The only rules I apply to myself is that everything I do makes sense. I can't use my personal knowledge of the game to inform my character - they have to learn and discover things for themselves.

I have many role play characters; an outlaw/gunslinger, a noir, alcohol driven private investigator, A mad scientist, an eccentric, wily, hermit survivalist, a thieving junky and a NCR special operations sniper, but my titular and most fleshed out role play is this:

Name: Xarnac The Conqueror AKA "The Scourge of Betelgeuse"
six: Asixual, although he would be considered male.
Age: 326 years Earth time (Middle aged), age isn't determined in years on Betelgeuse since its celestial bodies cycle its star every 400,070 Earth years.
Karma: Evil

Dossier:

Xarnac is a carbon based humanoid extraterrestrial being, from the Betelgeuse System. His skin is tanned orange like all of his race, from exposure to their red super-giant. Devoid of hair from generations of breading on dust free space craft, Xarnac sports a blue pompadour wig (He took a shot on human hair colors).

A war hero slash war criminal, Xarnac once held a most respective and prominent post in Betelgeuse fleet command. He was conservative and wary of the Councils views on alien encounters but was a fine tactician and scientist in his own right. He was made to lead star ships. More ruthless than his brethren, Xarnac was given a position to head the fleets flagship during tactical exercises in the Sol quadrant. Despite allegations of brutality he was well liked amongst his crew.

Xarnacs father Xaxax was the legendary hero that saved Glorxax the Confessor from the The barbarian hordes of Bellatrix. To say Xarnac had a chip on his shoulder would be an understatement. While Xaxax exploits were respected and held in high praise. Xarnacs military history was far dodgier. Their was the Xuluc Embassy terrorist incident, which only half the hostages survived and of course the siege of Trifoldun laying half the city to waste.

During the exercises and while scanning for deep space relay signals, Xarnac discovered radio transmissions coming from sol's third planet. A rebroadcast of Orson Welles' War Of The Worlds. Too faint to read from his current position, Xarnac broke from his formation and disobeyed strict high command orders, officially going rogue.

The Sol system at the time was an obscure arrangement of planets on the outskirts of known space. The last time it had properly been surveyed was 32,000 B.C. Earth time. At that time the only known technology in the stars orbit was an abandon pirate outpost on Mars. This time though, the suns third planet had vast amounts of radiation emitting into space. In a moment of opportunity, he conquered this planets sole satellite. A small cratered dust bucket 225,622 miles away from its main body.

Provoking a people that didn't even know they were being assaulted.

Outraged and misinterpreting Welles show as a global panic, the High Council charged him with treason and war crimes against the Orion Pact, exiling him to be punished by the race he chose to attack. Donning a blue wig and through audio-dimensional technology, reconstructed his appearance to match Orson Welles. Ostracized, he left his home for his impromptu prison planet.

When Xarnac arrived on his new domain he realized the extent of his intellectual superiority over these strange creatures he now lived among. Initially puzzled by his immediate acceptance into their society, Xarnac played along as the happy wanderer. After a short time though his jealousy and rage at the betrayal from the hands of his own people over whelmed his mind and began a reign of terror killing the very lifeforms that were meant to be his executors. None are left alive in his wake of misery, taking slaves and experiment specimens in his comings and goings. Now bored of this place and feeling melancholic, Xarnac has decided to head west following the migrations of his victims.

Enter Xarnac left into a desolate arid desert...

No, he finds it absurd that his people exiled him for such a stupid race. On his planet his actions were seen as nothing more than animal cruelty. He can never live down his rush to judgment when it came to earth. His Oedipal conflict and chip on his shoulder where the only reason he even tried to conquer Earth. In a vain attempt to overshadow his fathers celebrity. Hes also always searching for a way or parts needed to get his incapacitated space ship running again. He enjoys playing humans against each other, before he destroys them all. The irony is that humans didn't even know he landed on the moon and Xarnacs mistaken belief that the nuclear fallout was vast amount of heavy elements to plunder for his people. Xarnac obviously doesn't understand the Councils position on aggressive actions toward alien races and apparently has never read the Orion pact thoroughly.

He believes in humanity, that each person on earth has some redeeming quality and that murder is (typically) an unacceptable choice. He likes to think that while the greater good is something to be worked towards, the destruction of life sets back progress, and that by murdering to achieve the greater good, you would simply be setting it back by lowering yourself to the same level as your enemy. He also veiws Caeser's legion as hippocrits.

Everyone deserves a second chance huh?
And you said that it was 'typically' an unacceptable choice. So...there are some people beyond redemption?
Wow, his morals sound kinda close to mine.

My first character was essentially an avatar of me. I acted and reacted the way I would if put in that situation (except, of course, pretending to be braver because god knows i would cower inside a house all day if put in a post nuclear wasteland). I didn't owe anything to the NCR, Legion, or House despite what they all thought. And as all 3 factions repeatedly pushed me again and again despite me constantly telling them I have no interest in helping the further their agenda, I finally struck back and through New Vegas into anarchy. Best play through yet.

My second was the same as my first as far as stats go and I used very similar weapons and armor, but this time I did more of a typical good guy so obsessed with the cause that he can't see the bad in his friends. Sided with the NCR and slaughtered many Legionaries. Wasn't as fun as taking Vegas myself, but still pretty enjoyable. Just wished I had gotten the anti material rifle and the armor on the cover, but I never found the rifle and I didn't wanna kill any NCR. Still hoping their is a way to get the armor without killing one that no one has found yet...

On my third, and current playthough, I made a very perceptive, intelligent, and charismatic character who somewhat likes in endurance. He's gay, mostly because I wanted to see how the Confirmed Bachelor perk affected gameplay, and uses energy weapons. I just got my revenge on Benny, and haven't done much else yet, but I plan on favoring house this time around.

Next I'm gonna do a melee weapons specialist who joins Caesar's Legion. Not sure on a lot of the specifics yet.

Then, I get to think up crazy characters with various stories to roleplay as.

My character has allied himself with the Legion after what I saw at Nipton. The Legionaires were right, the people are corrupt.

I'm running my usual chaotic good who can't understand people (low charisma) and prefers the wasteland over towns. Since she can't stand anywhere for long, a courier job suited her well enough....the longer the trip, the better. She knows best guns, stealth and survival. She holds a fundamental view that things should be better...and could be better, if everyone just did what they are supposed to be doing. She can, and does, however, overlook her own behavior, as long as the end justifies the means. If someone comes home to find their hovel looted, well, they can rest easy that their stuff will go to a better use then it was being used for.

In the end, if things get better, then that's a good thing. If it's not looking good, well, the grass is always greener elsewhere.

And about those boys who shot her? Well, the world must be a better place if they die.

Tried roleplaying as myself... didn't work the way I hoped. Once I finish my first playthrough I'll start again and try to be more dedicated to err... being myself, I guess.

immigrated from Great Britain to the United States to chase the American Dream. Nothing that fancy, of course. Set your hopes too high and you'll end up dancing in one of those cages in Gomorrah for very few caps. She was hoping to start her own ranch. Live off the fat of the land. Brahmin and bighorners - the works. Sitting on the house porch at night with the dog, the only light her lantern. Of course, it didn't quite work out that way. First big problem was to get to the US in the first place. She had to sell every single thing she owned, no matter how personal or priceless, to get on that boat. Second thing - she found herself dropped off at Maryland. That's a long way from Nevada. She got there eventually. Traveling with caravan merchants helped a lot but that's not even half the story.
Came to Nevada capless, naive and lonely. She did the odd job for Mojave Express but err... something sort of came up. Now she has to clean up that mess and all.

S - 6
P - 4 +1 (Four Eyes)
E - 4 +1 (Intense Training)
C - 8
I - 7
A - 4
L - 7

Traits: Four Eyes, Wild Wasteland
Tag skills: Melee Weapons, Speech, Repair

My character in-game has turned from a childlike cannibalistic wastelander to err... a guile and fairly well off politician. Hmm. Interesting transition at least.

I'm playing a shady kind of character who one day wishes to rule the wasteland. He tends to take his time at things. He likes to stay out of trouble and usualy snipes as he is very stealthy. He uses mostly supressed weapons.
