Fallout 4 -- Is it an RPG?

Post » Fri Mar 11, 2016 8:40 pm

I really hope new DLCs bring in more RPG elements (choices, cause and outcome) into FO4.

Sole Survivor cannot be evil in commonwealth...

but I hope SS can be either pure good or evil outside the commonwealth. lol

FNV DLCs offered many different outcomes within the DLC setting.

FO4 probably can do better. ...or worse. lol

I'd rather have complex outcomes and meaningful decisions over tons of options min/maxing my character to bypass skills not needed for my character build. So I actually don't mind the streamlining of skills and annoyances like weapon repair. Even characters flagged as "essential" is something I can tolerate. What I don't like is how NPCs in Bethesda RPGs all seem to treat you like the scum of the earth no matter what your accomplishments are, and there is nothing you can do about it outside of installing mods. The world in Bethesda games should react to your actions, good, bad, neutral or mixed.

Fallout definitely needs branching quest lines and consequences. Especially for side quests. One of Bethesda downfalls is they do not truly allow you to play an evil character, just being a jerk for the fun of it and have certain people react accordingly. I might want to be a Sole Survivor who says "[censored] everybody, I just lost my family, this world needs cleansing". I should have a choice to play out a character like that until the end if I don't have a change of heart.

All in all, I'm happy with Fallout 4 despite it's flaws. I just hope Bethesda ramps up the difficulty for the Very Hard mode for people who want the Survival challenge without worrying about food, water and sleep.

Off topic, there should be a way to destroy the MInutemen.

I would like to see varying ways to complete the game much like in the original Fallout's. Siding with opposing forces or both to achieve your own goals with different outcomes for each. It's a difficult thing to achieve, but if more people want this, maybe this is something they will keep in mind for their next release.

All in all, if they pull it off, it could be the greatest Fallout yet, combined with the solid combat, character leveling, and free-roaming exploration.

Fallout series is now one of the biggest video game title out there...

and only way to keep this up is by providing what general population wants.

...and you know most video game players, including critics, ...just want to see dramatic story and more action in the game.

I think FO4 focused on those rather than focusing on RPG elements of the game because FO3 & FNV had clunky battle and weak drama.

So next game we can probably expect something that combine all good things from FO3, FNV and FO4.

....Probably year 2019....

At least Bethesda has RPG elements that can actually change the story and outcome. You must agree on that?

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has seven different endings depending on your choices through the game. The same goes for Fallout 4.

I think Fallout 4 is more RPG than many other games.

Dragon Age: Inquisition and the Mass Effect trilogy are not real RPG's, but movies where you believe your actions changes something in the story progression. But you are carefully but determined lead through the story without any real options. This is not the case with fallout 4. You don't strictly have to follow the story line and the outcome is up to you.

But we can call Fallout 4 a 'limited RPG'. A pure RPG would demand so extremely many voice actors working 24 hours for 3 decades.

Oh indeed. Bethesda in my oppinion do the genre of rpgs the best. And they certainly have descisions that impact whatever outcome or outcomes of the story/stories you happen to be following. My point was, as far as rpg's go, we have almost lost what I really consider an rpg to be. I dont know of any game whatsoever that satisfies this particular craving. But thats not the game nor the developers fauly per se. A true rpg is most likely something that will remain out of reach for quite awhile longer. Unless as you said, ita worked on for decades, and with how technology changes so fast..... basically impossible.

Agreed. Since Bethesda flags your companions as essential, it would be cool if you had the option to gather the existing companions and form your own faction as a means of achieving your goals and playing through till the end to complete the story and decide the fate of the Commonwealth. Each companion you would recruit would offer certain kinds of quests based on their strengths and intel they gather. For example Piper and Nick could give you quests to find out more about the Institute and kidnappings based on their knowledge. Curie could give you quests relating to science and G3 synths, Cait's quests would be dealing with the Raiders and using them to build up more recruits and reach the end of the game.

Similar to the other factions, you can do some of each your companions quests to a certain point, where you would have to decide which route you want to go. Is it following Strong's path and uniting with the Super Mutants? Or is Piper's path of uniting wit rescued kidnapped people and grieving family members to build forces for your faction. Obviously, things would be more complex than that, but another option to truly claim independence and follow your own path instead of deciding which created faction you want to side with. It would make for good replay value since each companion questline in your faction would result in different endings combined with other actions you perform throughout your playthrough.

Back when I played Unreal Tourmanent Assault in clans we often hang around in the chat channels. One of these channels had a chat bot installed with something you might call a 'mini AI'. It had a wide sheet of answers to chose from when discovering certain keywords in your dialogue text. It was not intelligent in any way, but the idea was good, and it was also very entertaining.

I think there was a game trying to integrate this but it failed in the end and was causing a lot of bugs. I don't remember the name of the game.

I don't know, there's quite enough craving for it if the backing for Wasteland 2 and Pillars are anything to go by, and both of those games did very well. The new Planescape is coming out, ahem Tides of Numenera, and then there's a new Bard's Tale coming out from Brian Fargo, the creator of Fallout and Wasteland.

Well said. It's an incredibly broad genre. So, as you said, it's entirely subjective.

Good point. The big problem is not just people being unaware of the older games or not wanting to going back and experiencing them. It's also that in many cases it's now impossible. Console's are somewhat safe with people holding onto cartridges, making ROMs and whatnot. But with PC games there are so many games that just will not run on modern machines. For example, racing games where the programmers linked the car's speed to the cpu's speed, so now when you load the game up the cars are zooming around at mach 4. Or just cases where they were never saved off of floppy discs, or where they cannot run on Windows 10 even in compatibility mode.

There are ways around these hurdles, but you generally have to be both lucky and determined enough to figure out how to play them.

It's not like movies where you can go to a class, be told "This is the list of great classics" and then hunt them down online or at a video store. I have a far easier time find copies of the Marx Bros movies then I would tracking down old Lucasarts Adventure games and getting them to work on my PC.
