Fallout 4 is set mostly after Fallout 3!

Post » Fri Nov 27, 2015 9:07 pm

You argued that people are performing mental gymnastics to show that 200 does not necessarily equal 200 years, because like me, they feel that the '200 years' means around 200 years and not exactly 200 years. I pointed out that during an interview with polygon after E3, Pete Hines mentioned that Fallout 4 was a sequel to fallout 3, thus events in FO4 should be after (and by more than 2 months, imo) FO3. This is also the interview that Pete Hines specified a 235 year old character over the interviewers 230 year old character. It suggests that 200 years is an approximation imo.

Which would mean FO3+Broken Steel would only be two months... August 2077 is just the start date of FO3.

Obsidian was smart not to make Fallout 3 references, since you don't know what Beth is going to do and that could put them into a pidgeon hole where they have to account for this thing and so on.

There better not be an age with the character, I don't want to play a 19 year old again or 30 year old. Let me choose the age of my character as a roleplaying material. :wallbash:

Excuse my ignorance, but is this confirmed? Or is this just an assumption based on what Pete Hines said in that interview where he mentioned a 235 year old survivor?

Yeah Todd pretty much said the same thing at E3. You are a 35 year old husband/wife, with an infant named Shaun, the husband being a war vet of some sort. That's what's known

The interview where Pete 'corrected' the interviewer sounded like he was suggesting 35 years. And the fact that our male protagonist is a war vet would make this even more believable. Also, if you look at the two characters at the start of the tutorial, they definitely look to be around 35.

One additional 'easter egg' that would connect this to the Commonwealth setting is the fact that at the start of Fallout 3, this was the exact age of both Harkness and Armitage (the two androids).

Many others on here have said it & I've said it on other threads. Fallout 4 from what is said takes place about 2 months after everything in Fallout 3. So fallout Nv will not be brought up at all & i'm fine with that because other then rumors or books there's not much chance for a lot in the dc arena to get to the vegas arena & plus the commonwealth is very secretive a perfect reason for it to take place after Fallout 3 & before Fallout Nv.

The lights go out in the Commonwealth because the Courier was also carrying the Institute's annual electrify payment to Hoover Dam for 2281.

...Is the Boston area powered by the Hoover Dam..? Seems a little far for that to be tangible.

I love what Obsidian did with New Vegas and hope they get to do more, but they put the Fallout Bethesda games on the East Coast and the Fallout Obsidian game (or games) on the West Coast for a reason.

And New Vegas had so many different endings based on Courier choices, that ignoring them and letting Obsidian work out which events are canon for the next West Coast game makes a lot more sense.

I'm sure that New Vegas is canon, but with nearly 3000 miles between them, four years is a blink of an eye even in human terms, so even if Fallout 4 is after the events of New Vegas, only minor elements will have filtered East.

Just looking for possible reasons why the events of New Vegas would have a serious impact on the Commonwealth located over 2700 miles away.

Eh, seems like straw grasping, really. But I've seen people trying to rationalize NCR or the Legion going to the East Coast...you know...Ignoring everything else between Nevada and Massachusets to focus on...

But...Furthermore, with all the talk of this game taking place roughly during or after Fallout 3, and NV taking place several years later, those events have not transpired yet. As though Bethesda is giving Obsidian their own little pocket in the timeline to work with. Different spot in the timeline, different part in the country. Less room to step on toes.

Oh good, so it's not confirmed?

I really hope our character doesn't have a pre-determined age, although 35 wouldn't worry me.

I think you may have a point, any canon choices that effect NV would be decided by Obsidian. And so even if there is some kind of cross-over in terms of characters or events from the West Coast, then Obsidian would have been heavily consulted on this so as not to step on any plans they may have for NV2. But I still think that a very wise choice for Bethesda would be to set Fallout 4 some time after NV. This would certainly give more of an 'open book' for any future continuity between the East and West Coast.

There could also be a number of 'story reasons' why this would be an absolute necessity...

People are still saying that Mr. Burke could be Frunmentari, despite that really making no sense at all and absolutely nothing suggesting it.

Honestly, the only West Coast factions I'd like to see are the Followers of the Apocalypse, the Gun Runners, and maybe the New Canaanites. Out of those, the Followers are the only ones who seem like a faction that could/would have made the journey. The Gun Runners wouldn't because there isn't enough profit in it. I could see the New Canaanites doing it before the White Legs nearly wiped them out, but I think their missions are mostly going to be on hold for a while so that they can rebuild their numbers.

That said, I think that Fallout 4 could take place after New Vegas without stepping on any toes. The events of the Mojave are unlikely to come up in conversation in the Commonwealth.

No, it doesn't. All that line says is that the guy was 35 years old when he entered the vault, and 235 years old when he exited the vault. It still puts the date at 2277.

The only start date we have is that Fo3 started on August 17th. There is no start or end date for Broken Steel.

I have posted some info about project purity on http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1526246-the-glowing-sea/?p=24148696 thread, that could suggest why we may be starting after 2277.

I've seen a lot of what you have posted and it is all very well supported.

But I think you might not be correct for this one.

The arguments in this thread have become very subjective all of a sudden. I thought we were discussing likelihood of its time settings rather than what we would like to see and not see.
