Fallout 1 & 2 Should they be remade?

Post » Thu Dec 01, 2011 9:56 pm

I don't want it to be remade because they will change it alot. They will take out the six, drugs and violence ie being able to kill kids. They will mess with the canon. It will be like when george lucas remade star wars and added all the stuff that are from the new star wars. Now take that and picture the old star war being remade by mel brooks not Lucas. It will be a mess if they did it.

Yea I know my anology is crappy but it I think the my point is made :P

I agree with the Frog :P "If anyone is keen on trying these great classics, you are encouraged to take them with a grain of salt and adapt to their system of play. Those who beg for a remake of FO1/2...have no indication of true desire to experience FO1/2...at least, not properly - not in their purest, truest, original incarnations.

Well we saw how bad Fallout 3 was, I can just imagine how Fallout 1/2 would be butchered. The well written and intricate stories of Fallout 1/2 would be replaced by "the cool factor", which would instead give us a ton of poorly written/obscenity ridden dialogue, mixed in with extreme violence and no plot. One of the biggest mistakes(aside from the many other mistakes that Bethesda made), was to put Fallout on the video-game machine(since then you have to appeal to the cool factor, over story or quality). Unfortunately though, with the demise of Fallout 3(AKA Van Buren), the days of well written dialogue and intriguing characters are over.

Well with any Luck New Vegas being made by the people that made 1/2 will have all that the first two had. I would sell my soul to have Van Burnen made the way it would have been made. Why did they have to Cancel it why!?

If anything, I would like to see Fallout 3 remade in the style of Fallout 1/2. Also, it would be great to see Van Buren released(in the state that it was in, when it was canceled).

Agreed! :)

Am I the only one who thinks the worlds of Fallout 1 and 2 were created with their combat, SPECIAL system, and entire artistic direction in mind? Remaking the games wouldn't do them justice - it would be like if somebody wanted to experience Donkey Kong but only played shooter games, so someone remade it as such.

You speak my truth as well, Mr. Frog. :D

Well Interplay did give us the most excellent Brotherhood of Steel instead...

To be remade with better graphics and the same isometric view and unofficial fixes for the purpose of porting it to other devices or making them more compatible with future PCs wouldn't be a big deal. I still vote no, however. Because if they were turned into Fallout 3, as was suggested, I would not support it nor touch it when released. The chances of any company besides the original creators not messing with anything because they think it'll improve it, is slim.

I have Fallout 1 and it is beast. I love the old style of games, such as Contra :mohawk: and Fallout 1/2. They have that old style with the turn combat, but I exploit the glitches to much, I'm already level 16 and I've only played for an hour. Never change Fallout 1 and 2. Then the original 1 and 2 will get lost forever, and we will be stuck with this TOO glitchy good graphics. Yeah the graphics on Fallout 1 aren't the best, but it's not as glitchy as Fallout 3.

I would like to see them remade but not in the sense everyone else is talking about. I'd like to see the textures re-done whilst staying true to the originals in order to allow play on modern monitors. F1 and F2 are essentially stuck at 640x480. All three of us in my flat have 1080P monitors - 1920x1080. Not only is 640x480 not widescreen, it also looks painfully bad when upscaled that much. I still love the original graphics, but it'd be nice to be able to use my new hardware to display it.
There's an example of a mockup of how Sonic 2 might look if it was remastered in the way I'm talking about http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2010/2084665595_bc8ea2d834_o.jpg.

A few replies:
Yeah if you like that kinda thing, from what I've seen, which isn't lots thats for sure, it looks a bit naff, a bit like Gauntlet from a 45 degree angle, my point is that I'd like to see them in the style of Fallout 3. Don't take it the wrong way, but I prefer switching from First person perspec. (in combat) to close up 3rd person perspective when I'm not in combat. I don't know can u do that with Fallout 1 & 2????

Changing the perspective would break the game, I feel. It was designed to be played from overhead with turn-based combat, not like some fast-paced frag fest.

"but the games were great even though i never entirely knew what to do when i played them but to just run around an fight something until i die."

Seriously?

I'd love to try them at some point, but even my Mum hates this PC because its so useless (and thats sayin something) and we have that Kaspersky Internet Security on, don't really know if its any good or that I should even mention its name. Sorry! I'm PC wiser than some people I know but not enuff to warrant an expert rating, I can take it apart and stuff, change this that and the other but software is outta my range and the only thing to do is to get a new computer but that won't be happening for a while.

The minimum spec for F2 required a 120MHz processor and 32MB of RAM, my phone has a processor five times faster than that and eight times more memory. I'm sure your PC could handle it if you got your OS sorted.
I've a games console from Microsoft why can't I play PC games anyway, its just a con at the end of the day. I should in essence be able to but I can't.

The 360 uses a PPC processor (IIRC), Windows runs on X86, expecting stuff to work perfectly on both without modification is like expecting a petrol car to be fine with diesel. They're close enough, right..?

I know there was a fan based overhaul started to remake fallout 1 using the Fallout 3 GECK, I wish them the best of luck if they are even still working on it. I would instantly download it if it were ever released. I would'nt want a studio to make it, but if made by Fallout fans for Fallout fans I would give it the benefit of the doubt and judge it for what it is, not what I felt it should be. Because I'm not going to spend the time it would take to make it.

Thats the thing, I want to play them for the setting and the game-play, but the graphics are a real deal-breaker for me. If my lame computer knowledge is correct, it would be easy to do a huge graphics upgrade while just using the same source code from the original game. I'm sure there would be some modifications required but i think it would be relatively easy. now I'm talking about graphics on say, the level of a Game-cube game. If I'm wrong on the difficulty of revamping the graphics then please correct me.

I would most certainly like to see a remake of these classics! I have played the original, and while I love them, I would equally love to see them with an optional first person/real-time option, and updated graphics.

You're both relatively correct and totally wrong.

You're correct in that the code itself probably wouldn't require massive overhauling, although I imagine some adaptation wouldn't go amiss, depending on what one wanted to do (if true 3D was desired, this would stop being true, however).

You're wrong in the belief that it'd be "easy" to update the graphics themselves. It would mean re-drawing everything in the entire game. Doable, certainly, but difficult and extremely time consuming.
I'm not a developer, so feel free to correct me if someone knows better, but I'm relatively sure I'm right.

Porting F1 and F2 to Van Buren would probably not be that easy, unless significant parts of the back-end ran on the same principles.

I'm also guessing it'd be a whole lot of work; but one can always dream =)

(or hope that the fan-made engines/mods come to the rescue =)

Fallout 1 and 2 in the style of Van Buren would be an acceptable remake. Then again, I would still like to see Fallout 3: Van Buren released!
