Fallout 2 Spec Script

Post » Sun Jan 02, 2011 6:33 pm

A friend of mine who works for an LA production company told me about an amazing Fallout spec script that came through his office. I don't know the details, but he heard that it was written by a friend of the creative executive my friend covers scripts for. He called me because he knows how crazy I am about Fallout, in particular the second game (it was the first one I'd ever played and remains close to my heart). Apparently this script (called simply "Fallout!") was based on Fallout 2, with certain scenes alluding to the first game, and managed to condense the game into a very satisfying two hour experience. I'm not sure if this is even possible, but it sounded interesting.

My questions: Since Fallout 2 was developed by Interplay and Black Isle, but Bethesda now has the rights to the Fallout universe (pretty much, the Fallout Online thing is still, I'm told, up in the air), would such a spec script require the rights from Interplay or Bethesda?

Probably Bethesda.

There's been rumours about a fallout movie for some time, and Bethesda did register the fallout trademark for Movies, TV shows, etc.

If a movie is just going to follow the FO2 plot, then I don't think I'd be particularly impressed.

To be honest I'm never impressed by movies based on games e.g. Tomb Raider, Resident Evil and Hitman; I loved all 3 games but these movies flopped big time and so will Fallout I guess.

*edit* Okay, okay, okay, .... there was one movie I absolutely enjoyed ... : Silent Hill!

Well, from what I understand, it was written on spec by a friend of the CE's. He didn't own the rights but wrote it anyway as a script sample. I'm just wondering how many firewalls are in place between this random guy and Bethesda - if he has a chance of getting it optioned.
