What can be done with cars that can not be done better with modified robots?
My place in Megaton even had a Mr. Handy, the armory a Mr. Gutsy there was the deputy at the front gate, the tinkerer at Robco who sold me RL-3, the mechanist at Canterbury Commons, Cerberus of Underworld robots and tinkerers have interacted as NPCs and companions for a while.

Cyber dog Rex replaced Dogmeat, ED-E replaced RL-3 then ED-E had a DLC, Lonesome road.

Why can't the PC be a tinkerer doing tech repair and recovery missions and gaining skills?

He/she could trade with, offer service perform quests for factions like the followers, BoS, Enclave, outcasts, other tinkers, settlements you name it.

Allow them to fix up their own power armor or a construction/industrial grade power suit that allows them to run all terrain at mountain bike speeds, lift and carry hundreds of pounds with the ability to use power tool/machine tool attachments, cutting-welding tools, and wield weapons. Maybe armor the power suit.

allow them a Mister Gutsy and a Mr. Handy capable of wielding weapons or tools, and credibly carrying weighty gear, weapons, loot, supply inventory. A mobile brain bot capable of heavy hauling given it's treads, maybe a couple more bots for sale or trade.
