I've been reading r/Fallout on and off today and have been keeping an eye on thesurvivor2299, and I'm totally on the fence with this one.

My biggest question is, if it were a hoax why would Bethesda not do something about it? There's definite copyright and trademark infringement going on if it is a hoax. Regardless of the publicity or interest generated in the game, copyright and trademark laws exist for a reason and Bethesda is a business. You can bet that if someone used their legally owned material without their consent and implied a connection to them that was false, something would be done about it. thesurvivor2299.com has been up more than long enough for a legal team to have dealt with it as well. The other 2 sites (which I won't even type the names of because they are definite fakes) don't have that similarity. There's absolutely nothing on either site to directly connect them to Bethesda, so there's no legal grounds to take action against them.

But here's why I'm on the fence...

The whole thing seems a little TOO vague at times. 2 countdowns? And when the 1st one ends, MORE morse code? A free font and free counter used on thesurvivor2299.com? A domain registered with GoDaddy? Saying ABSOLUTELY NOTHING?! No hints whatsoever anywhere BUT on thesurvivor2299.com? No Vine posts? Nothing cryptic on Twitter?

Maybe my own doubts point to absolutely nothing, or maybe I'm all wrong about the legalities of copyright and trademark law. Either way, I certainly hope Fallout 4 is coming sooner rather than later whether or not this whole thing is a hoax. And if it isn't a hoax I have to hand it to Bethesda's marketing team. There are people on Reddit trying to find hidden maps in the background of Bethesda's "Cyber Monday Sale" pics from Facebook and Twitter. If this does turn out to be a hoax, it's so incredibly elaborate that it calls to mind the guy from the South Park World of Warcraft episode...

It also amuses me that there are now people who know what a reverse alpha keyed Vigenere cipher is.

The only thing we have now is time... and time svcks. Even if this turns out to be real we still have about a year to wait for the actual game, which makes me sad

you see there well into development of the game, suposedly so far into it that they already started to hire people to do the Voiceacting.

for some reason one of the Voice actors was more or less given the green light to shoot off his mouth and gave us the hardest news we had so far, namely that Three Dog (who is in the DC Wastelands) will be back....(granted more or less) Its kind of hard to see them hireing him to be the DC Rock Jock for a game set up in the comonwelth. Bascialy if none of that crap is anything they have developed in game then taking over that sight would mean haveing to create unplaned content to match that stuff..

Ok let me give you a fairly straigh forward reason why they have not just gone in and shut it down

If whoever beind this is a modder, and his mod is "Survivor2299"...THEN WHAT EXACTLY HAS HE DONE WRONG?

ok APART from Violoating 2-3 Diferenct FCC regulations with that one reported radio broadcast. thoes are fairly minor and the FCC does not even seem to have given them a second thought

I was under the impresion someone recorded something.but the point remains if this was just some over eager fans mod sight of fallout 4 news sight or whatever then realy what has he done wrong?(apart from making anyone think it was an official Fallout 4 news thing

The problem with deciding if this site is real or fake is that if it's a hoax Zenimax's legal team would be all over it and it would of been shutdown by now. People say, "Well Bethesda wants the free publicity!" However in reality, it's really not their decision.

The ZENIMAX LEGAL TEAM my not be taking legal action due to the fact that this is not harming there IP its only boosting there revenue as more people have bought from the bethstore and the games on STEAM, so if it is a hoax,its making BETH more money.

I do not think it is a hoax, i also do not think it is real, i am just going to wait and see and not spend too much time trying to figure out if it legit or not, that way i won't be disapointed either way.

More than likely there not taking any Visible action because (1) its the blooking holiday weekend, Most people are off untill monday or wensday (for that matter tomorow theres only gonig to be one person at my office. and I go back tuesday!)(note do something realy nice to Tonya!)

and

(2) for all we know its just a over the top fan sight or someone planing on advertising there own Fallout mod. Beth bringing down the wrath of the legal department in that case should cause so mutch backlash from the comunity that noone ever buys another bethesda game ever.

Spoken as a modmaker (which is working on a big project): Registering a domain for my mod with the Zenimax data and making a FO4 ARG about it ? I have a lot of courage but such a stunt no that wouldn't help the download and endorsemant counter I think (not that I really care about downloads and endorsemants ).

Point about 1>)Do something extra nice for Tonya,she deserves it.

2)I doubt people would completly stop buying there stuff if they dropped the nuke on anyone,but I see your point,they are likely just letting it ride cause if they don't annouce it anytime soon,say around the aVGX or the timer's end,then people will see it was a hoax and be all dissappointed/pissed then they sweep in and drop the trailer/site/pictures and say yeah heres the date....and suddenly google's servers crash from the weight of the devoted getting what we wanted in the first place.

I for one just figure I'll wait the next 5 days till the VGX and watch/listen and then debate on something, the site has been interesting and quite a good discussion around here and a few other sites I lord around,lol...so atleast its been fun regardless if its a hoax or legit.

As promising as that looks, I could easily do that with photoshop and drop it on the net and let the thinkers work it out.
