is fallout NV a spin off?
in my mind its fallout 3 was the spin off
fallout NV have more in common with fallout 1&2 than fallout 3
like were it set ,the rep system ,traits and even who making it
i think fallout 3 should have been fallout DC and fallout NV be fallout 3

Yes it techinically is a spin-off. I think they will do a much better job with Fo4 (when they hopefully make it. :D) But yea it is a spinoff like BoS or Tactics.

Well yeah - it's not "Fallout 4: New Vegas," so the term "sequel" doesn't really fit. Spin-off is really the only other name that I can think of which applies.

I guess it's whatever GTA: Vice City was in relation to GTA 3...

Think of it like this:

You got GTA 3, then you have Vice City and and San Andreas. And then you finally have GTA 4.

Yes it's a spin off and I agree it has more in common with fallout one and two but it still might not be a sequel. New Vegas will be the closest to a true fallout three we will ever see. Bethesda does not like to have their games go back in time only forward. More forward in time fallout goes the harder it will be to make a true sequel to fallout two. I hope are character is related in some way to The Chosen One and therefore Vault Dweller.

Fallout 3 is the offical sequel to fallout 2 but it's not a true sequel. Nothing can be done about that now.

Anyways this topic has come up before.

Technicly FO3 was the spin off, with it being none related to previous events in the FO story. I think of them as parallel series now. Where events are played out in one then the next changes things up and takes a new spin on the story / universe.

I agree, but it's not going to happen, and quite frankly, I'm just happy to be getting NV. It's announcement was very unexpected, and everything else I've been seeing has been very encouraging.

But yes, NV is a spinoff.

What about the BoS and the Enclave? wasn't there several lines of dialogue that were relevant to the previous games?

True along the lines of grounding history of the factions but most of it was new filler text. And being a seperate region with a vast distance. Most of the story was unique not a true carry on. Think about TV spin offs say c.s.i you get an episode where the new cast meet the old, Its all about giving a quick backstory that ties the series together. Then when the new take over in a brand new show its all about them. So a little connection is normal in a spin off to keep the existing fanbase happy. It does not mean the new one is a follow on of the old series. Hence FO3 was more of spin off. Because NV is going to bring back the factions and backstory from the first two it seems more like the original. But depending on the depth of continuation it too may seem to be a spin off.

It's another game in the fallout universe.
Not a spin-off, not a sequel.
Just plain and simple: Another game.
Just it was with the GTA series.

[IMO]
Ironically ~yes, but just barely; It has too much of the core gameplay to be a spin-off.
If they did not say it wasn't a sequel, I think you could call it one based on the previews and interviews.

The question has been answered and it's being closed before the infamous debate of "spin off vs sequel" begins and becomes a repetitive flamefest blast from the past. :)
