Fallout 3 still crashing in 3-15 seconds in Win 7 : Fallout 3

I have tried everything here.
Using the D3D9.dll file.
Running in Compatibility for XP and Vista.
Run as admin.
Downloads Klite codec.
Moved the Steam folder into C:Games.
Added the two commands to the fallout.ini folder.
Reinstalled the game.
I have the most recent video drivers.

Just bought the game after replaying FONV and can't get it to run.

I have no mods. About 3 to 15 seconds after starting a new game while walking as a baby it freezes. I have tried other peoples saved games with the exact same results. About 3-15 seconds it just freezes and have to Ctrl-alt-delete. Have looked at the majority of the posts on here regarding similar problems.

Great then why is that not stated in bold letters before you buy a new copy because I am betting 80% of Steam customers have Win 7.

Fallout 3 is compatible with Windows 7 as many people have played it with that OS. It either is not installed correclty or you do not have it fully patched. You did not mention having downloaded and installed patch 1.7.
After you have done that, do the .ini tweaks and see what happens.

Just because they say they dont support it doesnt mean you will never get it running. Many people do run it on Win7.

Im just curious about the list you posted on fixes youve tried. Is that the exact order inwich you tried them?

I would start from the fresh reinstall. and edit the Fallout.ini file found in "MyDocuments\MyGames\Fallout 3\FALLOUT.INI

First limit it to 2 cores ... then try 1 core. (type what exactly your doing for this)

Ofcourse run in the combatability mode.

Before you start applying any of the other fixes you mentioned ... try some in the tweak guide >>> http://www.tweakguides.com/Fallout3_8.html

Specifically the ones about memory loading and multi threading found a few pages after the one I linked , but read that whole section.

I did exactely that, REinstalled, edited the Ini with this

bUseThreadedAI=1
iNumHWThreads=2

Tried changing to 1

Then tried changing compatibility.

What compatiblity do you suggest? There is Windows XP Service pack 2 and XP Service Pack 3 Then Vista and then Service Pack 1 and 2 for Vista.

I am using the Steam version, doesnt it patch itself??

Doesn't matter downloaded and installed patch with same results. Run around as baby for 4 seconds and freezes up.

Just realized that I changed Fallout_default.ini in the steam folder and not Fallout.ini in my documents. Just got to the end of baby part with no freeze then a CTD occured. Trying again now.

I deleted the second line but I didnt change the first line. it was in there already, I just changed it from 0 to 1. Should I put it back to 0? BTW I just played the entire intro without a CTD.

I can't tell you how embarrassing it is after messing with different things to find out my first change would have fixed it, if it was in the correct ini file. GRRR

Days of frustration would have been gone.

Guess now I get 3 hours of adding back in my favorite mods. LOL

Well thats good news.
Haveing a 1 in the line , turns the function on. Having a 0 turns it off. Its probably fine and the INI in your save location is overideing it, but might give you problems in the future. ^^shrug^^

I'm surprised that you had so many issues. I'm running Win 7 64 bit with 8 gig or RAM and also with an ATI Radeon card. I am using a 6-core processor (AMD Phenom II X6). I never tweaked any .ini files or changed compatibility. I've never had any issues playing Fallout 3.

Did you download it from Steam? I got the, what's it, gold edition or whatever the one with all DLCs is called. I'm sure that version is all patched. So, it must have been either missing patches or something on your system that made it crash. Firewall? Virus software? When was the last time you optimized your HDs? Cleaned your registry? etc.

Well, I'm glad though that you got it to run!

I know how frustrating non-playing games can be! lol

Yes it was very frustrating especially to find out that I could have fixed it in the first hour of messing around. Thanks guys for your help. The game has been running smoother than Skyrim or Fallout NV actually. Very little crashes even with like 40 mods. Going to try the Fook/FWE combo with the Merge file. Hoping it works out because I have never tried Fook.
