Fallout 4 Stutter Microstutter 64hz Fix

Post » Sun Nov 29, 2015 11:43 pm

Hey guys. Firstly I have fps dips to 50 odd sometimes due to my hardware, however despite that I noticed a strange stutter when looking at certain objects, in a building interior or in the world. I used Radeon Pro to show my fps and noticed that when this happened by fps was displaying as 62 fps, most noticeable in a small interior cell. I have a feeling this is like the stutter issue from all previous Bethesda games. The following fixed it for me.

Download and install Radeon Pro. It works for Nvidia and AMD.

Create a new profile for Fallout 4, and match the "Tweaks" tab like mine for 60fps monitor - http://i.imgur.com/PBF4Aza.png

Specifically:

Vsync control - Always On

Triple Buffering - Ticked (can decrease performance on some systems)

Display Refresh Rate - 60

Lock frame rate up to monitor's refresh rate - Ticked

My specs

AMD FX 8350 @ 4.3ghz

EVGA GTX 760 OC

G.Skill 16GB RAM

Other than this I have no fancy Nvidia settings other than "prefer maximum performance". No ini tweaks, no pre-rendered frames, just default.

Hope this helps some of you folks.

This 64 Hertz issue is related to the gamebryo engine. I used to clamp previous games to 48 FPS to avoid any and all issues. It would also mask the frame rate drops in those games.

That's a good tip!

I don't know if it is that bug specifically, but I did see my framerate hitting 62, even with vsync, before my radeon pro setup.

This is my latest set up capping at 50, which counteracts the drops in fps to 50. Now buttery smooth and no stutter :)

i often hear that triple buffering AND vsync can cause performance trouble, did you try "vsync ON, triplebuffer OFF" and "Vsync OFF, triplebuffer ON"?

I always use TB when I can if I notice stuttering or input delay. Haven't tried that set up yet but I'll give it a go a report back!

Ok so I didn't try no vsync with TB as it wouldn't work without Vsync. I tried no TB with Vsync and couldn't really tell a difference, in either how it felt to play or in framerates. Imperceptible from what I can tell. Stutter was gone in both as I'm now locked at 50 anyway.

For my next long play session I'll try without TB again.

Ok on my system triple buffering did decrease performance in some areas. I found a place not far from Concord where looking in a certain direction my fps was dropping to 41. I took off Triple Buffering and that went to 49. With me capping at 50 that didn't matter, and it's still silky smooth with no stutter :)

I have amended the OP to say TB can decrease performance on some systems.

This is the second game where I've had to tinker with settings and couldn't max out at 60 fps with my hardware. The other was Witcher 3 which I decided to put everything on max and cap to 30 fps which works great.

Hey guys,

I tried to run proradeon but when I did, it gave an error and i couldn't ad a profile anymore.

I'd really like to run the game smooth, the game also crashes when I try to play it fullscreen but thats not as unplayable as the low framerate.

Thanks in advance!

The problem seems occur because some frames are much shorter than another (same was in Skyrim), so when some of them executes faster than 1/60 seconds bugs occur. Any fps limiters do the job well, but vsync depends from display (144 Hz f.e.) and video panel options, so i believe much safer to use fps limiter instead (corruption of saved games is what we care the most).
