Fallout 4 PC UI

Post » Fri Dec 11, 2015 10:19 am

I don't get it, Bethesda. I really don't. Do you care about your fans? Do you actually listen to our feedback or monitor all that the modding community does for your games?

http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/3863/?

SkyUI. It is THE MOST POPULAR Skyrim plugin of all time. It has, at this time, 5,380,000+ unique downloads and 367,000+ endorsemants. If that wasn't the most obvious message the community could have sent you that the vanilla PC UI you developed for Skyrim was absolutely horrid, I don't know what could be.

So why on Earth did you repeat the same mistake with Fallout 4? Why? Why did you do that? I don't get it. The only excuse I can see is that you just do not care. You don't care how modders improve your games. You don't care what your fans want. You just don't care.

If it's something else, tell us. The keybind options are terrible. The default hotkeys are inconsistent. The UI isn't as efficient or effective as it could be. The modern keyboard has over 20 keys. Why aren't you allowing us to take advantage of them?

I just don't get it.

Agreed 100%. Bethesda should have hired its creator and included the mod in the PC version of Fallout 4. And Skyrim.

Seriously, did the testing on the PC never get past "Meh, good enough."?

Yeah, that's the impression the UI gives, indeed. "It's good enough. Let's go home." :lmao:

Todd has already gone on record as saying he prefers the xbox, so that kinda boils down to they couldn't give a [censored] less about the pc ui, as long as it works on console...after all, we've always had the likes of DarN and the SkyUI team, right? Now hopefully we'll have the FalloutUI team at it to make the UI more bearable.

But TBPH, we shouldn't have to be relying on the modders to fix the disgusting UI they continually push on us.

and the controls, good god the controls are horrendous. How could they possibly think the pc controls are even remotely intuitive? Especially for those of us who are left handed and like to remap our keys.

actually and most likely, the tester is someone like me that is playing the game with 0 problems wiht the UI, why??? bc i adapt and dont QQ like a 80 year old grandpa that dont know how to adapt to new stuff.

Really guys get use to it, we live in a age where we share games with console and UI are going to be made to fix a controler no a keyboard and mouse.

Actually, it is Bethesda that is not adapting to new stuff.

The current paradigm is consoles AND PC. The goal should be to make each new game better, not go backwards for one at the expense of the other.

The OP is right on and provided perfect justification.

I'm mostly okay with the UI design. Dunno why everyone finds it disgusting. It could be improved, of course. More submenus and longer/bigger trade windows, for example.

The controls though... yeeeesssshh. I'm adaptable too, but it's clear they didn't even try. They made it for controllers then slapped a "keyboard emulator" on it.

Works perfectly for me. I find it intuitive. Only thing that bothers me ever is the inventory when invisable

Seriously, I do not see what the damn fuss is over Bethesda's UIs on PC. In any of their post-DOS games. Like, what's so bad about it? The controls? It's only become easier and easier since Morrowind to navigate the UI without having to do any crazy mouse&keyboard gymnastics, or take my hand off of WASD or whatever. Is it the font size and information on a single screen? I've never had a problem finding anything, getting to the pertinent information about anything, or organizing anything - and this isn't a grand strategy game, they don't need to have everything on the screen at once.

Of course SkyUI is better - you wouldn't download any mod if you didn't think it was an improvement, and it's so popular because changing the UI does nothing to affect the actual gameplay, so it appeals to everyone. Not to mention a vast number of other mods are outright dependent on it for the Mod Configuration Menu. But the SkyUI team could have honestly just left it at item categories for containers and they'd have my endorsemant - and the new crafting menus they've added are honestly worse, except for maybe alchemy.

But seriously, can someone explain to me why everyone always rags on Bethesda's UIs? Fallout 4's is pretty much a complete improvement over 3 and New Vegas. And in comparison to other multiplatform games, I really think I have way less a problem getting around in Bethesda's UIs.

Bethesda does not bow to paradigms. They have vowed to provide as equal an experience as possible across all platforms that is what they deliver. I respect conviction not paradigm shifts.

I wouldn't say it's an equal experience at all. Console users get an interface designed specifically for consoles while PC users get an absolute mess.

They don't respect their PC fans. That is what it comes down to. They know the modding community will change the UI for them, so they don't waste the time and effort doing it themselves.

That's messed up, and it's really depressing that you somehow think they're doing us a favor. You shouldn't respect a company like Bethesda for purposefully giving us a less-than-optimal experience. They should strive to take advantage of whatever platform they're releasing on, meaning developing a separate UI for the PC and providing additional options for keybinds and UI control.

That is what other developers do. That is the modern way of doing things. It's time for Bethesda to stop acting like a shanty little development team. They are raking in billions from their games. They need to get with the times and provide us with the best possible experience.

Pointless discussion. Even if after Skyrim Beth said "Let us make a better UI next time!", FO4's UI would have remained the same. They are way too obsessed about the Pip-Boy to do anything else for Fallout unless it became a very serious issue.

Stupid Pip-Boy...

What are you talking about? Do you want Bethesda to make a completely unique UI for the PC? And wtf is so bad about the UI that makes you say they don't "respect" the PC fans? Come on.

Yes, I want a separate UI for the PC. And I want more keybind options for the PC. If Bethesda respected PC fans, they would actually take the time to look and see what it is we like. You know, check out the most popular PC mods and actually incorporate some of those things into their games for us. They don't bother with that though because they want nothing to do with the PC community. Sure, they release a modding tool, but only because it's a selling point. They aren't actually doing it because they love their PC fans anymore. Perhaps that was the original intention, but it's clearly no longer the case.

No, they do not. You cannot change the UI or keybinds with the official tools. You need actual developers to create things like script extenders and reverse engineer the UI to actually change things like SkyUI did.

Bethesda didn't make it easy at all. Just ask the team developing the Fallout 4 Script Extender -- many of the keybinds are hardcoded in the swfs for the UI. Why?

i have 0 clue dude, i have never change the UI on Skyrim and i actually see the SkyUi and i think it doest help it just make a HUGE WALL OF TEXT

I guess is up to each player how to adapt to the game. Some adapt better that others.

Some ppl need to have everything describe on the UI to micro managing every little detail of it. For me the UI need to be simple and easy to use. That what i get on Fo4 i dont want to have a WALL OF TEXT.

Yes. One that uses all 1920×1080 pixels, perhaps displaying thirty or forty items in a list with ten columns. One that lets me use the number keypad to enter how many pieces of ammo I want to transfer.

On a PC, I am generally 50 to 60 cm from the monitor, as opposed to several meters when using a console. I can handle smaller fonts that allow more information at a glance.

On a PC I have 102 keys. Why should "throw grenade" be the same key as "Punch". Why should "Reload" be the same key as "Sandman Kill"?

Why do I have to hit Shift to open the PipBoy, but Tab to close it? Why are some crafting stations E and some H? Why do some messages on screen say "Press E to craft" when they actually mean H? Why do I exit from the workstation screen by hitting H and exit from PipBoy by hitting Tab but exit from crafting by hitting Tab then Enter (on the other side of the keyboard, forcing me to lift my hand)? Why is it that I press IJKL to move, but still have to press AD for lockpicking?

That is hilarious. 99% of all the games being produced in the AAA arena are using large 1-3 gigabyte bundled encoded assets for their games. Bethesda's entire engine is an open book and while they can't legally share the proprietary software that would allow us to create and alter on their level, they still allow us to reverse engineer their stuff. Nobody else in the industry is doing what they are on the level they are doing it.

So because they are doing something different from other developers, it's perfectly acceptable for them to half-ass it?

No, it's not. It's 2015. We should be able to map almost every possible in-game action to any key we wish. Bethesda is just lazy. They do not care enough to afford us that option. That is the issue here.

Allowing us to edit parts of their game doesn't excuse the fact that they did a piss poor job developing and polishing it.

They didn't half ass anything. They try to provide the same experience...blah, blah, blah... You already know this your just self entitled and don't respect it. Nothing to do, sorry. Wait for a PC UI mod and I guess keep griping at Beth in vein. Time well spent huh?

I don't think you understand what "same experience" means.

Using a controller to play Fallout 4 feels fluid and intuitive.
Using a mouse and keyboard to play Fallout 4 feels awkward, confusing, and cumbersome.

How, exactly, is that the "same experience"?
