Fallout tactics sound problem

Post » Mon Apr 13, 2009 2:41 am

Hi just buy fallout trilogy some days ago and i got a problem with sounds.
I can hear voice, movies, ambiant sounds but my guns dont make sounds.
However there is a raider in the tent near the chest in the first mission from wich i can hear his gun sound.
I looked in the sound folder of tactic and theres only like 7 wav files(his gun sound is there)
Am i missing some files here? I tried the acceleration thing in dxdiag with no result, i tried applying the 1.27 patch but it dosent want to because it said tactics is not installed on my computer. I tried reinstalling with no success. If anyone has an idea plz share with me and if needed ill try to post some comp info.

I have the same problem. The game's still playable, but it's a nuisance. The BGM also stopped playing every once in a while, like certain songs are missing, but I've since started using custom music so that point is moot.

Anybody can tell us if they have more than 7 .WAV files in the sound directory?

I have the exact same problem, and I have a feeling everybody will. It's going to need some kind of patch. No, I do not have more than 7 wav files in the core/sound/game directory, but I dragged out my old Fallout Tactics CD-ROMs to poke around (because I remembered clearly I had them running on Vista with sound). If you extract the "sound-0.bos" file from those original discs, there are 2033 files there. After throwing them into the core/sound/game directory, all the sounds are working now on the trilogy version. There was also a "sound_amb.bos" file which extracts to sound/game/Ambient with another 243 files. I'm not sure if I've got these working or not (whether they should all just be dumped in the core/sound/game directory, or if we need to make a core/sound/Ambient to throw them into), as I never really noticed they were missing in the first place.

Either way, something went wrong somewhere. I'm not sure if they're actually included on the DVD, and there's some kind of bug in the installer that prevents them from being installed, or if they actually weren't included on the disc in the first place.

Anyway, help would be appreciated. My whole point in buying this Trilogy pack was to have all the games on one convenient disc. It would kinda svck to have to keep lugging around my old FT:BOS discs just to extract the sound files.

I no longer have the original fallout Tactics CD's to obtains the sound files from. Any help would be great its just not the same playing without sound effects.

We are looking into this right now.

Update:
The 7 files you see in the Sound folder are from the patch. The game properly installs "sound_0.bos", which contains all of the sound effects and then adds the patch sound effects.

I'm currently comparing the sound_0.bos file from the Trilogy with the sound_0.bos file from the original CD release. Just like the original CD release, the Trilogy file contains the 2033 WAV files.

Another Update:
Tested both installs (original CD release and Trilogy DVD). Both installs played the same audio and sound effects for multiple weapons and events (clicking, movement, user interface SFX). The audio files, once the patch is applied (and again, the Trilogy version is pre-patched -- applying an older patch is a Bad Idea), for both games are identical.

There must be some other issue, because the audio files on the Trilogy version are present and accounted for.

  • Do you have updated audio drivers?
  • Have you tried compatibility mode? (Right-click on the game icon, select Properties, click the Compatibility tab, click the check box and select Win 98)
I'll keep poking around.

-Chris

For those having an audio problem, you can try this:

1. First, make a copy of your "sound_0.bos" file.
2. Rename the copy of the file to "sound_0.zip".
3. Unzip the contents of that file into the Sound/Game folder (with the 7 patched files, so don't overwrite those files, and you might want to back them up first just in case).

Let me know how it goes...

Hi Chris!

Thanks for the checking it out and the prompt reply.

The problem would be that my install from the Fallout Trilogy DVD did not seem to install sound_0.bos nor sound_amb.bos at all.

I also couldn't locate them poking around the .dat files on the disc itself. Where should they be installed (I'm assuming \Fallout Tactics\core\) or where can they be found on the disc itself? I've un-installed/re-installed the game multiple times, and haven't been able to locate either file locally.

I know it's not a driver issue, as filling the core\sound\game\ and core\sound\Ambient directories with the files from sound_0.bos and sound_amb.bos from my original Tactics CDs seems to have everything working properly. Also, I went down the road of testing multiple compatibility modes before I went back and pulled out my original CDs to try to hunt down the problem (as I remembered I was running BOS flawlessly without compatibility mode from the original CDs previously).

Though if sound_0.bos and sound_amb.bos are installing from the Trilogy DVD for you... I'm mystified. Could there be slightly different pressings of the disc?

Hello once again,

I just realized something and had a guess as to what could possibly be going on. It would be interesting to know how many of the above posters having sound problems are in Canada (and whether there was a version of the game released specifically for Canada).

My version of the Fallout Trilogy was bought in Canada (with bilingual packaging, et al), and the contents of the DVD seem tailored to Canada (ie French and English files, the files present on the DVD itself are autorun.inf, data.common, Data.English, Data.French, English.DAT, Fallout.ICO, French.DAT and Setup.exe). Is it possible sound_0.bos and sound_amb.bos were mistakenly not included on this release?

Yes, it's looking like the different pressing is the problem, but we still need to confirm.

Hi! I can help you speed up your confirmation and confirm it for you! I just bought your game at Best-Buy in Canada, and surprise it has sound issues. same as above. random working music, alot of awkward silence, and so far no gun shots..! :( its amazing how a games quality deteriorates so much with the simple loss of the machine gun fire. i can't even play it, and i've spent over 3 hours now trying to find a solution. so far i can only think to try and find these awol sound files which do not seem to exist on my disc or computer. please, for mine, yours, and everyone's sake, please confirm & fix this issue. their's some canadians up here in the snow trying to imagine the sound of gunfire in the toasty fallout dessert!

You can download the missing files here:

http://www.gamesas.com/downloads/fot_sounds.zip

Unzip the file, copy the two resulting files (sound_0.bos & sound_amb.bos) to your Fallout Tactics/Core folder. You only need these files if they are missing from your installed folder.
