It's kind of a tactical version of the original Fallout games. (Which in hindsight, is just repeating the title of the game.)

Basically, it's more mission-based with less of an emphasis on actual roleplaying, but the combat is expanded and improved - and allows you to control a squad of members as opposed to just yourself and modifying the AI of your companions.

Sort of like the differences between Final Fantasy and Finaly Fantasy: Tactics, really.

It's nowhere near as quintessential as Fallout 1 or 2 but it's just as good a game as Fallout 3, in my opinion. Err, maybe I've got that backwards. Fallout 3 is just as good a game as FO:T. It breaks lore and does quite a few things horribly but all in all it's a great little game. The first half > the second half, imo.

It is better if you don't go into it expecting much of a roleplaying experience or a terribly compelling story. As a series of interesting combat situations it's pretty good, though.

But yeah, there is a reason it's generally considered semi-canon. It works best if you just choose not to take it too seriously.

They are very different games, designed to do different things. FOT was a logical progression of turn based/ISO, and I enjoyed that aspect of it more in FOT than I did in FO1/2. FOT was a squad based tactical game, with just a little bit of RP mechanics. I still have it around here somewhere, and maybe I'll see if it runs in Vista after I'm ready to set aside FO3.

If I'm not mistaken, I belive Inon Zur did the soundtrack for Tactics as well. I like his work in FO:T much more than FO3. FO3 sounds much more fitting to something like Oblivion.

I loved Tactics a lot. The squad-based combat was excellent and I especially loved the improvements they made to SPECIAL. All that was enough to make me overlook the complete lack of RP and canon inconsistencies. I guess to enjoy the game you really have to have the right mindset. It's a strategy game, not an RPG. :)

And Fallout 3 is a FPS with a little bit of RP mechanics?

No, I also think that Zur's work on FOT was better than his work on FO3. And he's still nowhere near as good as Mark Morgan.

Think of it as a cross between Fallout and Commandos. It's a pretty good game to be honest, although a bit hard to get into if you've played Fallout 1 and 2 first (and I'm hoping everyone has played that before FOT).

Who cares? Just be thankful that Bethesda hasn't hired Jeremy Soule yet...

I'm referring to Inon Zur's involvement in Fallout 3.

I'm with you in that Mark Morgan was still much better. I preferred Fallout 1's music; Fallout 2's was alright but most of it was just recycling Fallout 1's music and what original tracks had been there gave me painful memories (with http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8CsLYRViuEc). Vault City, for example, was incredibly painful to listen too. Even if the city was supposed to be highly advanced it didn't feel Fallouty enough to me.

I'm a biased source though, I'd like to say Fallout 1 to be superior in all aspects. :P

Inon Zur is good but I didn't find the Tactics music very memorable (granted, I never got far in that game). I was too busy crapping my pants at the fact R. Lee Ermey did voicework in it! :D

All I was saying is that his musical direction in FO:T was more appropos.

Nice little game but try not to be annoyed with all rifles looking the same (M16) like I did. The background music / sound score is great, better than FO3 I would say. It's been about a decade since I played FOT but I can still hum a lot of it's background music / sound score in my head.

Fallout also has some of the best two-dimensional sprite gore I've ever seen. Burst firing the H&K MP9 at point blank in front of a human is priceless. I love the scream.

Fallout Tactics you'll have a blast unitl you are getting closer to the end in my opinion.

***SPOILER****

Turned into like you vs all robots in every mission toward the last few missions. By the time I was really into it the mass robot thing kinda turned me off.

I think if they used a improved version of Fallout Tactics gameplay & graphic engine for Fallout 3 that not only would F3 have much more content, vehicles, population etc (a long list of things) but the combat would have appealed to everyone. They thought going FPS would reach out to everyone, but lot of people who liked F2 don't like FPS in any way. Im not one of them and I think F3 is a good game but not as good as Fallout 2 or Fallout Tactics in my opinion.

I think you are 100% incorrect. It might have meant more content, but I certainly would not ahve enjoyed the combat more, nor would I have enjoyed the isometric viewpoint any more.

Tactics isn't a RPG, and several aspects of FO2 annoyed me so much that I can't bring myself to playing it again. I absolutely detest the out of character humor in it, and I detest many of the dialogue choices I was forced to make, which didn't fit how I envisioned my character. Tactics was a good squad tactical game, and FO2, IMO was inferior to both Fo1 and FO3.

Well, I certainly would like it much more than Bethesda's FO3, although lilspankdog is incorrect in that the game would appeal to everyone, since no game ever will.

You guys can wait for the remakes. I hear that one came out just the other day. Unfortunately, if you eant another TB/ISO Fallout, that's going to be your only hope.
