Fallout: The Midwest

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 3:34 am

So I am in the midst of riding the high that follows a LONG Fallout 3 bender, and have been inspired to write a story set in the Fallout Universe, specifically the Mid West (mostly in the vicinity of Kansas and Missouri). I am wondering if there are any experts on the subject matter, that could fill me in with information pertaining to the region in regards to the Fallout Universe. I've done some independent research and started writing the story a while ago. It's on Fanfiction.net (Fallout: Vendetta), and has gotten some good reviews. What I have written is based off of what I could find on the Wiki page and creative license, but I am nowhere near finished and I want to make sure I am using "canonical" material.

As stated above, this is a call to the experts on the Fallout universe; I want to know about the Mid-West...What can you tell me?

Not really a lot we can tell you thats not in the wiki - and whats in the wiki is mostly semi-canon.

My advice is to simply not worry about sticking strictly to canon, and do whatever the story needs.

Play FO Tactics and Brotherhood of Steel. The Calculator and Attis' mutie army made the Enclave look quaint.

I would say play Fallout Tactics. Those areas were in the game. One of the Endings I think would make a good story
Spoiler
the Barnaky ending where the Brotherhood turn on their deal with mutants. They start rounding them up and putting them in death/work camps. They even do the same for humans that side with them. Over time the mutants start a rebellion against the BoS "Mutant Liberation Army."

Those details haven't officially been defined. Fallout Tactics covered that area pretty well and takes place between Fallout 1 and 2 in the Fallout timeline. You can either play that game or read the wiki, but the thing about Tactics is that it is "semi-cannon" at this point, meaning that general details, like the Brotherhood having a presence in the region, are true but the specfic details are subject to change. In particular the ending is probably highly suspect. So all you can really do is extrapolate from what has been said here and there in Fallout 3 and New Vegas, which isn't much.

If the Midwest BOS can conquer 50 tribes, cyborgs, ghouls, multiple mutant armies, and The Calculator's machine legions, they're cool and lore-worthy to me. Write on.

Wish I had the time and energy to write Fallout: Detroit. I did the cover art as a pencil drawing, it's sitting on my shelf. Yeah laugh now, but it's about the Detroit that was riding high on the high-wage manufacturing hog post-WWII and fat on the Resource War economy before the nuclear reset button changed it all. Think of Canadian remnants, Red Wing colored power armor, General Atomics headquarters, Joe Louis Thunderdome, Chrylus Corporate HQ in Auburn Hills, the Midwest BOS, Selfridge AFB housing the Midwest Enclave, the Erie Stretch, carnivorous Deathtails/Mutie Deer, Freighter City, Sodium Township/Ghoulville in the Salt Mines, Fermi 1 nuclear power station, and Walleye/Muskie-Lurks in Lake St. Clair; and that's just the beginning...
