Fallout tie-ins?

Post » Mon Nov 01, 2010 4:38 pm

I read. A lot. Whenever in a bookstore, I often see many tie-in novels for franchises that normally exist in non-textual forms (Halo, Gears of War, Warcraft, Star Wars, the list goes on and on). I've always thought the fallout universe had a great, deep lore, and that you couldn't possibly explore all of that world properly in a videogame that takes more than a year or two to complete. Has there ever been any talks of a fallout novel or other form of "Expanded universe" tie-in? Or is it because of that rights snafu with Bethesda and Interplay that none exist?

Because action adventure games take months if not years to make and can only touch on so much content, limited entirely by budget and game-making technologies, whereas the only investment for a book is a few months and the writer's pay. Say, for example, there are people who want to know what happened to Hawaii in the fallout setting. Making a game set in hawaii would be too time consuming and expensive, but maybe a book could shed some light on the situation? Or if we're not getting another game set in the capitol wasteland, maybe a followup novel there?

If by "most of the people" you mean kids who play Halo, then yes.

From memory there was a Fallout RPG being worked on but that was canned due to copywright issues if I remember correctly.

Don't know who would control the publishing rights to books or marketing rights to something like action figures. But whoever it is, is missing out on a revenue stream. I would buy the books and the action figures.

I should also point out that there ARE Halo Tie-In novels... and it just so happens one of my friends is the editor that handles them. They're actually selling VERY well.

Bear in mind this is the day and age in which "Warcraft: Rise of the Lich King" can make it onto the NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER LIST. I am aware there was a Fallout RPG that was canned, mostly because it was commissioned by interplay but Bethesda put the boot to it. Theoretically, if Bethesda commissioned a tie-in novel, would there be no problems?

I think that the books would do well in two difference genres -- manga comic books and regular -- horror, action/adventure.

I despise anything to do with anime, or manga, or other Japanese stuff.

And, it also wouldn't really fit with Fallout.

Not saying I would read it, but it would definitely be a revenue maker. Having more/varied revenue to support game making would be the best IMHO.

Maybe you missed the Samurai on the alien spaceship then.

(then again, personally, I've been hoping that there's some retcon that makes MZ non-canon. Like it was another lobotomy-inspired hallucination)

That would be Bethesda, the current owner of the Fallout franchise. If they wanted to release a line of Fallout action figures, books, comics for example then they would talk to reputable companies such as DC or Diamond Select and grant them a licence to produce a line of figures/comics. Bethesda would then take a percentage of sales.

Like Star Trek for example, Paramount/CBS grant a licence to said companies and take a percentage. Eidos do the same with Tomb Raider related merchandise and so on (i suppose it's SquareEnix Europe now )

Poor choice of words by me. When I said "Japanese stuff", I don't mean everything Japanese, just things like anime. Samurai does not necessarily equal anime.

Edit: I would totally buy some action figures and put them around my PC.

Capitalizing on every possible means of revenue available is not really Bethesda's style but given the fact that they allowed a TES novel to be made I don't see this as far fetched.

I would read it. I just read "The Infernal City: An Elder Scrolls Novel" and enjoyed it quite a lot and can't wait for the second one. So if it were well done, I think it would be well received. And since Bethesda now has done such with that Elder Scrolls novel I think if they ever have need of a novel to move the game forward for a new game, they would do it.

I'd like to be able to buy a collection of bobble heads and different cool stands to put them on next to my computer. Along with any books in the FO universe.

Haven't read the Infernal city yet, but looking forward to - when ever I can find it translated version in my country.
I'd love to read a novel based on the Fallout universe, as long as the writer is dedicated enough to study the lore, timeline and setting to make it sound right.

I'd gladly read a book set in Fallout Universe. When I read comments like Damian3395's it makes me... well it would be offensive so I won't express my thoughts about him =)

I'd read Fallout comics books though! :D I'd love if they were drawn in that 50's style as Vault Boy.
