Fallout is trendy now

Post » Sat Nov 28, 2015 5:15 am

Well, as the old adage goes, you can satisfy some of the people some of the time, but you can't satisfy all of the people all of the time.

What you want, may not be what we want, or what the developers want.

I treat video games like books and movies. Someone else makes them, I determine for myself whether it's worth the price of admission, and we see where it goes from there.

actually I was thinking more for role playing aspects of starting a settlement in the wasteland and experiencing the hardships of what its like to do so from scratch.

A thread beginning with a [censored] load of bad generalities; the future is not so bright with this thread.

Let me get my popcorn.

My god just enjoy the game or don't.
I mean honestly do you think it makes you look cool to point out how "lame" and "trendy" the game is like some kind of hipster?

The dog has always been a fan favorite for many reasons, but I can bet you anything after the initial encounter you never have to see it again.
The building is an aspect that has been asked for a long time, so they did it. Not to mention they introduced a form of building in Skyrim but now it gives you more freedom.

From what I understand you are more annoyed with the focus of these "trendy" aspects of the game. Well my friend, that is called marketing. Who are they gonna please? The market of 10'000 or to you?

Perhaps I am coming off a little aggressive or maybe I am missing the point entirely but is this seriously worth complaining about? I mean has Bethesda suddenly change gaming goals since skyrim? As for their marketing strategy has it really been any different from Skyrim or any other game in any other genre?

This just pitiful

Yep, and I'm still finding new things or new ways to play Skyrim. Same could be said for Daggerfall, or Fallout 2. The phrase is such a wide over-generalization and so open to interpretation that it doesn't really mean anything. People say it as if the older games had more depth, but I don't really see that when I go and play them.

You just hate all of those things because you think they are trendy, not because they are bad features. I bet you wear a fedora and smoke vape pens, too.

That heat of this burn can melt steel beams.

But ot: if you don't like it, and believe it is getting trendy, vote with your wallet.

If enough people do this, design direction will change.

Of course this will never happen because people generally buy good games, and Bethesda hasn't made a bad one since brink I guess.

Maybe wet.

Oh my, this thread is going to be popcorn heaven. Soon Bethesda detractors and apologists will be crawling out of the woodwork to start unnecessary yet oddly satisfying drama.

Not if the Mods are on point, and it's getting about that time in development where they are NCR Rangers like that.

Granted, I think OP has gotten the point we're laying down.

Seems everyone wants to jump on the OP here, but I can somewhat empathize with him. I felt Skyrim had a lot of the same issues OP points out, its more of an action adventure game than an Elder Scrolls installment.

However, I will say that we know very little, and as of right now, these features look like GOOD additions instead of tacked on lackluster ones. The only thing I'm slightly dissapointed with is Dialog wheel, I enjoyed list dialog and non voiced character because I can imagine what my character sounds like.

That's a ridiculous statement.

What is an elder scrolls installment?

TES is a franchise that has an unknown hero saving the day. This, unsurprisingly, includes action and adventure. Did you expect it to include book writing and farming?

That is an elder scroll installment; it is the only constant. They are games about making a character and defeating the bad guy.

Everything else is subject to change as the industry evolves.

This is true...That is essentially what a TES game is...An unknown rises up to become the savior of the land.

What is a Fallout game but the tale of an unknown who rises up to ruffle the feathers of the status quo?

I actually like the graphics. The dog not being able to die does bother me a bit but not too much. Followers have a tendency to run right into your bullet/arrows/spells in Bethesda games so making him immortal isn't too bad. The whole building a settlement this is fine but I probably won't touch it in if I can just buy a house or something. I'm taking a wait and see approach with the voiced PC. I hate it in Mass Effect, thought it was okay in ME 2 and 3 and like it in Dragon Age:Inquisition and Saints Row 2

Perhaps "Elder Scrolls game" was the wrong choice of words. The main point I was trying to get at is that Skrim took a lot of focus off traditional RPG elements that we saw in previous games. For example, attributes being absent.

Let me rephrase: It's a perfectly good Elder Scrolls game, but the way it goes about doing so is not what I expected.

I didn't expect farming no, but I did expect my race to matter, classes to exist at all, birth sign to be a part of character creation, and generally more to think about in that regard.

All either requires is a fallout or TES setting.

Halo wars was a halo game, despite being an rts.

Race did matter, even more so than past games because we got actual bonuses instead of an attribute boost (that was quickly irrelevant after you maxed said attribute out).

If Skyrim focused too much on action and adventure (which is ridiculous considering what the franchise is about), MW and OB focused too much on attributes that did nothing at all in the grand scheme of things.

Half of the attributes affected fatigue for some reason, and very slightly affected skills, so what was the point in them? You can replicate increased strength with endurance in Skyrim, Endurance attribute was the health stat and willpower/intelligence was magika.

Everything else was silly things like agility affecting stagger and bow damage (that should be strength), or WP affecting magic defense, which was replaced by wards.

I think that is essentially the spirit of both franchises, the thing that continues to make them what they are. As long as those remain, and the world they exist in is the world they exist in, anything else is just candy on top.

Agreed. Bethesda also took out a bunch of weapon/armour types, and made the spell/magic system in the game a joke.

I think the OP has a good point - just poorly communicated.

Anyone who thinks the graphics are too "cartoony" for a Fallout game either didn't play or is misremembering 1, 2, and Tactics. The promotional art was a comic book cover for pete's sake.

From my understanding in the past games race mattered way more. If you wanted to be a mage in the older games you couldn't be a Redguard or a Nord because they were warrior only races. And the Elven races couldn't be warriors just mages. Personally I think that's one of the things I think they did right in Skyrim. Personally I don't like the idea that a Nord or Redgurad can never be a great mage like a high elf.

Did he say all khajiit are child molesters or something?

You could be a Mage just fine. You just didn't have racials or skill bonuses tuned around it, just like in Skyrim.

Adrenaline rush is useless to a Mage in all games, so I'm not sure where the lamenting is coming from.

At the end of the day, the racials were so insignificant that racial choice did not matter, which is good considering a big selling point of the franchise is being whoever you want.

In Skyrim race mattered more because some things couldn't be replicated like berserker rage or highborn, and those races had a huge advantage in certain roles over others. In MW or OB these racials came as attribute bonuses, that soon reached 100 and were never considered again.
