Fallout Trilogy Graphics Problems and More

Post » Sun Apr 26, 2009 12:10 pm

Hello all,

I recently purchased the Fallout Trilogy game pack and am hoping to get to play the games sometime soon. Fallout 1 will run, but it is having graphical issues. big white and multi-colored pixels are all over the graphics, especially in the videos. I am running the game in 256 color compatability mode, but no luck. I tried having Vista run the game in Windows 95, and Windows 2K compatability modes. No luck.

Fallout 2 will not load. The game hangs when I attempt to open it up. Doesn't get past the initial "stay back" screen, and looks to suffer from the same graphics problems at any rate.

Haven't tried Fallout Tactics yet, but I suspect I will run into the same problems.

I have:
Windows Vista 64-bit
6 GB DDR3 RAM
Pentium i7-920
Nvidia GTX 295

I am using a 70'' Mitsubishi DLP monitor with an HDMI link to the GPU

I've written gamesas for help, and have also posted on No Mutants Allowed. No responses yet, but it has only been a day or so. Any and all suggestions are welcome.

Hey guys, I figured the problem out. I failed to install the game fully due to the installation trees. My fault, really. I didn't expand them, so I didn't realize that not everything comes pre-checked. I didn't have the patch, or the High-rez version of fallout installed. I ended up deleting everything and reinstalling it. After tweaking the compatability settings(right click on application, choose compatability tab, choose 256 color mode, 640xsomething resolution, etc), I was able to get the game to work just fine.

Spent about 20 minutes rolling up my character, then another 30 killing cave rats. Found some raiders who (surprise surprise) turned out to be jerks, and was forced to revert to a saved game. ANYwho, if you have graphics issues I suggest giving that a try. I haven't attempted Fallout 2 as of yet. It could still not be running, but I will cross that bridge after I complete Fallout 1.

Thanks, Evarin. If we get reports from other people with the same problem, we'll have them try your solution.

I have the same problem with my original Fallout 2 CD, the screen has colored pixels all over and stuff.

I just restart the game over and over until it stops and then it doesn't cause any more problems until another start up later.

My system: Vista Ultimate 32-bit, 4 Gb RAM, Core 2 Duo 6400, dual Nvidia GeForce 7600 GT in SLI configuration, 26" Widescreen LCD NEC monitor

I'm having the same problems, but with just Fallout 2: the large white blocks and discolored pixels all over the image. Fallout and Fallout Tactics work great. The only one giving me a problem is Fallout 2. I tried to use the method a previous poster used to restart the game until the image corrected itself, but that did not work for me. Sometimes, the image got even worse. When I attempt to run the game in compatibility mode, the game won't start. It just gives me a pop-up saying "Fallout appears to be running in compatibility mode" and the only option is to click "OK" which exits out of every thing.

I had the same image problem when I loaded my original copy of Fallout 2 on this system. Any help would be greatly appreciated. The last time I had it running on an older system, I made it to almost the end then had a hard drive failure and lost all that work. This game will continue to haunt me until I finish it. Please help prevent me from going insane because of this albatross of a game now shackled my very soul until I finish it. I'm experiencing a kind of "Jumanji"-thing minus Robin Williams and pygmies. Edit ddraw.ini in the fallout2 directory, and change mode from 0 to 4. this will get rid of your pixel problems under Vista. It's actually Aero causing the problems on 8 bit pallete shifting - happens under Windows 7 also.

[Graphics]
;Set to 0 for 8 bit fullscreen
;Set to 4 for dx9 fullscreen
;Set to 5 for dx9 windowed
;dx9 modes cause some corruption of movies
;A dx9 mode is required for any graphics related script extender functions to work (i.e. fullscreen shaders)
;Modes 1, 2 and 3 are no longer supported
Mode=4

Thanks, this fixed my graphics problems.

Playing Fallout 1 on my Macbook running Windows 7.

Problem I have now is the audio will after a couple minutes turn into just "pops" or clicks.. If I exit to the main menu then reload saved game it's back to normal, but only temporarily.

Any ideas? I really want to enjoy this game (and I did just give y'all $20 for it.)

Thanks

Or for those not comfortable to editing the file, under the compatibility mode tab (right click the shortcut of the program/game choose properties) you can choose "disable visual themes" this will turn Aero off while the program is in use and once the program is closed Aero will return back to its normal state. Easier to do I think over all and have been doing this for my friends ever since Vista came along. 8-) Image
I told the Overseer of Vault 13 I'd give everything to save everyone, and so I did, I saved them all. Since then I've felt loneliness.

hey i do every thing but when the part that says about the file is there do you want to overright it i choose the yes button but then sunndely a message appear saying the it can not create the C:\program file(x86)\gamesas\fallout 2\ddraw.ini make sure the path and file name is correct. for the guy that says about the disable the visual theme thing will an error shows up, nor did the restart thing work either. maybe i should uninstall both fallout 1 & 2 and installed them seperatly?

I've tried *everything* listed *everywhere*. OK, slight (very slight) exaggeration but it sure feels like it.

I found that shutting down the explorer.exe process corrects all graphics problems with all my older games without having to use compatibility mode at all.

For audio problems I lowered the quality to 24 bit 48000Hz (instead of 96000Hz) and most audio glitches stopped happening. My newer games even stopped crashing. As often........

For the popping and other odd noises a lot of people get, there's a well documented grounding issue with most sound cards. Taking that bad boy out and putting some tape between the card and where it touches your case can often remove those problems. BTW, don't expect any of the manufacturers to implement that fix any time soon. They've been aware of it for years and haven't done anything yet.

Hope this helps someone and I hope the first two solutions make the FAQs because of the number of times I've seen them solve problems that the standard solutions don't affect.

I was thinking of buying the Trilogy, but now I am running Windows 7 64 bit. I downloaded the original Fallout from Gametap, just to see if it would work. When I play some of the areas on the screen turn almost to a negative. I think that this may be the same problem you're having. Just to confirm when you first watch the Overseer's message, are there parts on the screen that are like a negative color? If so I won't waste 20 bucks on this if it won't work right on my computer.
