Bethesda does not acknowledge the lisbian and gay legacy of Fallout.
Just because you start the game with a wife/husband and a child doesn't mean you can't be gay too. I have a cousin who has a beautiful daughter and was married for years, only to discover later she is gay. I had another friend many years ago who had a beautiful wife and two fantastic children, and yet he was gay too. There are many other people out there in the world in the very same boat as the two people I mentioned.
The point is that you can still be whatever you want to be. Want to play as a gay character? Fine, do it, nothing or nobody is stopping you.
It's true, after you romance a same six companion they say no homo. I mean what's up with that?
But seriously, peronally i don't think it's such a big deal for the reasons BarettsFloyd posted. Although they could have had one of the voice actors do the voice for the temporary same six husband/wife, i mean it's not that many lines. Like the guy that plays Garrus in ME for example. Infact they should just make him do all the VO for every male character.... forever....
Uh... what now? Has there been any actual playing of the game involved in this train of thought?
Because my female Survivor has managed to romance three female companions and hasn't even finished up with all the males yet. The game allows you to be straight, gay, bi, pan, and just lets you be polyamorous without any penalty or conflict. No one really cared enough to police your character's in-game sixuality, you could say; anything goes, except feral ghouls, mutants, and so on...
We need a mod to romance Strong!
Uh, have you played this game? They beat you over the head pretty hard with your happy heterosixual past.
It's probably my only major issue with the game - we can't even rewrite our headcanon because of the way the game treats our character and the way NPCs treat our characters. There is literally no way to write yourself out of this marriage you may or may not be able to identify with. Really, this was the only major misstep and it's so weird to write it this way and yet everywhere else be so inclusive.
Did you even bother to read my post? There are many, many, many people out there in the world with wives, husbands, and children who are still gay. You don't have to be one of those people who have never had any sort of intimate contact with the opposite six in order to be gay. It's also true that you don't have to have any intimate contact with the same six as yourself to consider yourself gay.
Again, I repeat, play as you like. Nobody is telling you that you can't.
The game makes it pretty difficult to head canon a gay character. It's pretty clear through the banter in the opening scenes that Nate and Nora are in love, so it makes it really challenging to imagine a situation where it's just a marriage of convenience or one of them is in the closet.
That being said, the game does let you romance a bunch of characters in s/s relationships. I don't see a big deal at all. I'm a little disappointed that I can't take the "Confirmed Bachelor" perk in this game (for the dialogue and XP). But I don't think there's any issue in the fact that it's difficult to play as a gay or lisbian character. They still give you the chance to romance men with a male character and women with a female character. I'm pretty pleased, especially considering that the romances are a pretty minor aspect of the game.
You can come up with a role play reason for this. The gay or lisbian vault dweller may have been confused because of a bible focused upbringing or was just in the closed to avoid trouble. If he mentions his wife in dialogue, it's because he cares for her as a friend.
Did you read MY post? Those folks aren't beaten over the head with statements like "I didn't think we could be intimate because you still seem so in love with your husband" when initiating a romance. Strangers who have no way of knowing of that past don't come up to them and tell them all about their past marriage and how they are 'tied to this place, their energy'.
That's why I asked if you have even played the game. If you have, you would know that there's just no way around the story Todd Howard wants you to have. Just go play it. You'll see.
As an aside, there's an awful lot of gay people who HAVEN'T had heterosixual marriages or children from those marriages. There's probably more people in general who don't really identify with the "Military man husband, Housewife with son at home in suburbs" than do these days, anyway. Of all the ways to send us after a baby, they picked the one least likely to illicit an actual emotional response from the majority of their audience.
um…. if your character is a female… you can romance and establish relationships with like four different female companions….. you can be gay in fallout 4… waste of forum space. and you can do the same thing with male characters _-_
Would having six with Strong be considered beastality?
Not really. I mean Super Mutants were human at some point.
Why and how is this an issue? You want to be gay or lisbian? Go find a boyfriend or girlfriend. Problem solved. m8
Is that a typo or are you saying it like a Mortal Kombat commentator?
Yeah that is stupid. For some of us, that is, well you know, gay. Its nice when there are some blank slate characters out there that we can make into what we want. I am not saying this is a deal breaker for me with fiction, because then i wouldn't like anything. It is just nice when a developer has the option for it.
Well its been bugging me ever since the first fallout.
I haven't reached a point of attempting a relationship yet in the game, but does wearing the wedding ring have an effect on the NPC's?
It's nice when a developer that's had the option since the start of the franchise doesn't take a huge step backward and write it back out of existence. If it hadn't already been established, no one would have batted an eye. In every other game your character was a blank slate and the only elements of your backstory that were written for you were things that would be out of your control anyway (parents) or completely inconsequential (job as a courier). Never would they have written a serious life choice for you and then dare to call it 'your' character.
I was also shocked they took out the perks. It just feels like some kind of erasure agenda and I'm not sure what we did to tick Todd Howard off.
Whatever it was, we are very, very sorry. Please let us have nice things again.
If it does I don't know. It was the very first thing I trashed upon gaining control of Todd Howard's character. It might add to the "Are you sure you are over your husband" speech the NPCs give you.
Bethesda has the one option practically no one else does, mod it to suit your own taste and in this release that option will eventually be available to anyone that bought the game. Bethesda can do anything but they can't do everything so they give us the tools to do it ourselves.
