Fallout: No Vegas

Post » Mon Apr 12, 2010 7:11 pm

After poking around on these and other forums and reading a few reviews, I have decided to NOT buy Fallout: New Vegas. The two main reasons for this are:

- HIGHLY intrusive DRM. And here I thought EA's version of SecuRom was bad.
- I am required to use Steam. I have disliked Steam since it came out and patently refuse to use it. I think gamesas is in cahoots with them for some sort of money making scheme (my opinion ONLY).

There are other things that put me off the game, but these are the main ones. New Vegas looks to be a decent game and I would like to play it, but, as it stands now, that's not gunna happen. If, by some miracle, gamesas dropped the Steam requirement and toned down the DRM, I might consider purchasing it from the bargain bin.

Thanks for sharing either way.

Why do you hate steam so much? You don't have to buy anything to use it, and (I think) you can use it to get the patches for games you bought at a store automatically. Feel free to correct me however, the use of Steam's features is a little blurry.
As for the DRM, fair enough.

Honestly, I'm glad I got it for the 360. I too dislike steam with a raging rage.

Steam and what other DRM? Steam acts as DRM itself. The game has no other DRM attached, unless it's hidden.

I guess you'll have to deal with not playing many future games. Developers have to protect themselves and Steam, right now, is the most transparent type of DRM available.

Thanks for sharing. Steam IS the DRM by the way and it's not intrusive in the slightest if you take your paranoid-goggles off, but there's clearly no way of changing your mind with that kind of prejudice so I will wish you happy trails.

(I hope this thread doesn't bring out the "I HAET STEAM!!!!" single issue wonks now!)

High intrusive DRM? You have to log into Steam. Once. Then you can put it in offline mode. Thats it. Comparing this to SecuRom is just silly and insane. Stop your whining.

You might as well just quit PC gaming if you categorically refuse to use Steam. Its how things are going to work from now on. Many games are starting to use it as DRM, and its just going to get more prevalent. Frankly, its a good system for both gamers and the companies, which is why its so popular. It is extremely light DRM compared to what Ubisoft or SecuRom do, yet is still moderately effective. Its also a cheap and effective method for effective patching for companies. Companies just arent going to pass up on that.

Also, I dont see how you can have any reasonable opinion on Steam if you refuse to use it.

To put it bluntly, companies think that they will do just fine without worrying too much about people with complaints like yours. And they are almost certainly correct.

Hating Steam hasn't been cool since 2002.

It's understandable. They tried Steam during it's first year which was extremely rocky and have probably failed to give it a second chance. Hey, their loss, right? :)

Disliking Steam is no reason to not play, if you are indeed a Fallout fan.

Pay no mind to the users of this forum who cry like babies about the game, as I have had very little experience with the Bugs/Glitches that people speak of. Maybe I'm just lucky, but I'm glad I went ahead and got it rather that taking to heart the crying on this forum.

I dislike Steam. I dislike having to use a client to launch the game, I dislike having auto-patching because many times patches break the game for people. Most of all I just dislike it on principle for tying my games to an account and making me ask nicely before I can play the game.

That said I do not boycott Steam games. It's not so awful that it's unusable and on an open platform like the PC it's kind of silly to worry about not being able to play the game someday, the community always comes through. It's a shame because I would like to vote with my dollar and help Steam become less popular, but at the same time it doesn't anger me enough to make me not want to buy the game like Ubisoft's DRM did.

Yep. Steam is the drm. I'm not sure what other "highly intrusive drm" you've discovered, but you may want to let Bethesda know about it; they may have grounds for a lawsuit against whoever added it to the game.

I use Steam and play offline, so I'm not sure what your issues may be. I would rather have Steam than the "you have to be online constantly and the game kicks you off if your internet hiccups" drm for, I believe, Assassins Creed 2. Or securom.

The 360 and ps3 have their own "drm", being consoles, of course.

There isn't much point to a thread like this, really. If you wanted to let Bethesda know your reasons for not getting the game, you could have used the "Contact us" link at the bottom of the page.

Hope you can find a game you enjoy.
