Fallout 3 Windows 8.1

Hello there,

I am aware that much has been written in terms of solutions to making Fallout 3 compatible with later Windows versions, however none of these solutions have worked for me yet.

I have a legitimate CD copy of Fallout 3 (I think it is the GOTY edition), I have a brand new MSI GT70 2PC Dominator gaming laptop with Windows 8.1 installed.

My hardware is as follows:

Intel® Core™ i7-4810MQ CPU @ 2.80GHz

RAM 8GB

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 870M

I have had the game installed, but whenever the launcher comes up and I click play it will just whir for a while before coming up with the launcher again. I followed the instructions provided by BenWah on the steam discussion forums, so I have been updating the GFWL, and of course disabling it when the update made no difference.

I have updated to patch 1.7, updated using the unoffical patch designed to fix this using Nexus Mod Manager, I have been into the .ini file to change that.

As far as I can tell, most of these solutions don't mention 8.1, only Windows 7/8, so I would like to know if anybody has a tried and tested fix for 8.1.

I love this game, it used to work fine on my previous XP and Windows 7 operating systems, unfortunately my new PC was only available with the festering turd of an operating system that obviously proves the whole "if it ain't broke, FINALLY, don't fix it" concept to be lost on Microsoft.

Please please please help if anybody has any ideas, any help is hugely appreciated!

All the best!
